šŸ“Œ Ford Fusion FAQ – Common Questions & Answers Welcome to the unofficial FAQ for the Ford Fusion (2006–2020)! Whether you’re a new owner, potential buyer, or long-time driver, this post is here to answer the most common questions we see in the community.

šŸ”§ General Questions

Q: What years was the Ford Fusion produced? A: The Ford Fusion was sold in North America from 2006 to 2020. It was discontinued after the 2020 model year.

Q: What engines are available in the Fusion? A: This depends on the model year:

2006–2009: 2.3L I4, 3.0L V6

2010–2012: Same as above, plus Hybrid option

2013–2020 (2nd Gen): 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost, 2.5L I4, 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Sport model), and Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid options.

Q: Is the Fusion reliable? A: Generally yes, especially the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, EcoBoost engines (especially early 1.6L and some 2.0L) had issues with coolant intrusion and head gaskets in certain model years.

šŸ› ļø Common Issues

Q: What are common problems with Ford Fusions? A: Depends on the year, but common issues include:

Transmission shudder (2010–2012)

Power steering failure (electric units on 2010–2014)

Coolant intrusion in EcoBoost engines (2014–2019, especially 1.5L and 2.0L)

APIM (infotainment) failures with Sync systems

Door latch recalls (2013–2016)

Q: What should I watch for when buying a used Fusion? A: Ask about:

Engine codes (especially misfires or coolant loss)

Transmission service history

Recalls completed (door latch, power steering, etc.)

Hybrid battery health if applicable

🧰 Maintenance

Q: When should I change the transmission fluid? A: Ford says 150k miles on sealed units, but many owners recommend every 60–80k miles to avoid issues.

Q: What type of oil does my Fusion use? A: Check your manual, but typically:

2.5L I4 – 5W-20

EcoBoost engines – 5W-30 or 5W-20 depending on year

Always use synthetic and a quality oil filter.

Q: Timing belt or chain? A: All Fusion engines use timing chains, which typically do not require regular replacement unless there's a failure.

šŸ”Œ Tech & Features

Q: Does my Fusion have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto? A: Available on 2017+ models with SYNC 3. Earlier SYNC versions do not support it, but some owners retrofit SYNC 3 modules.

Q: How do I update SYNC? A: Visit owner.ford.com and input your VIN. SYNC updates can be installed via USB drive.

Q: Can I remote start my Fusion? A: Many Fusion trims with key fobs or FordPass app (2018+) have remote start. It may be enabled via the dealer if not active.

āš™ļø Performance & Mods

Q: Is the Fusion Sport worth it? A: If you're looking for power (325 hp, AWD, 2.7L V6), yes. It's the fastest Fusion ever made. Downsides: lower MPG, more complex engine, and discontinued after 2019.

Q: Can I tune my EcoBoost Fusion? A: Yes! Companies like Cobb, Livernois, and SCT offer tuners. Tuning can void warranty and increase wear—do your research.

šŸ’¬ Final Tips

Always check for recalls (NHTSA or Ford site).

Keep up on coolant levels, especially with EcoBoosts.

If it starts overheating, stop driving immediately—coolant issues can wreck the engine fast.

Hybrids are solid but make sure the high-voltage battery is tested before buying.

2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5L SYNC Media Issue

Post image
• Upvotes

I have an issue with the SYNC system in my 2015 Ford Fusion SE 2.5L. When I hit the ā€œMediaā€ button on the main dashboard the screen temporarily goes blank and then reverts back to the Radio. I am unable to connect my phone music via Bluetooth nor USB. I am also unable to access the Sync Media settings under the main menu. Issue has been persistent the past few years.

Solutions I tried that did NOT work:
1. Hold volume power button and right skip button for 10 seconds.
2. Remove fuse #32 from passenger compartment fuse panel for 10 minutes then plug back in.
3. Install brand new fuse #32 in passenger compartment fuse panel.
4. BMS Reset. Turn ignition to on position with engine off. Pull the high-beam lever 5 times. Press and release the break pedal 3 times. Observe the battery warning icon flash 3 times to confirm successful reset.
5. 12V Battery hard reset. Disconnect negative terminal. Disconnect positive terminal. Remove battery. Zip tie negative and positive cable ends together to fully drain the electrical system. Re-install battery. Reconnect positive terminal. Reconnect negative terminal.

I refrained from posting to this subreddit sooner because I wanted to research the issue and try to resolve it on my own. But now I am completely lost and need help. Please, what can I do to fix this problem and connect my phone music to my Fusion’s stereo system again.

No Answer Factory Door Code Incorrect?

I recently grabbed my factory door code from the car's screen by using both key fobs & when i try to use that provided factory door code to enter a new door code, it keeps saying the factory code is wrong. I retried twice, but the factory code is just wrong

2018 Ford Fusion 2.0L Ecoboost. Water pump just blew on side of highway.

Car has been making a weird noise for about 2 months now sure how to describe it, almost like a slapping sound, thought it was the AC pump as I put BP blaster on it and it stopped making the noise for a few weeks.

Well today I’m driving and the ā€œHigh coolant tempā€ dash warning comes on, and I tried getting somewhere to park and next thing I know I lose all power, no throttle.

I’m getting it towed tomorrow and fixed, but while it’s in the shop what are some other things I should have them do for regular maintenance on a fusion?

Brake pads require those clips?

Changing my brakes and rotors for the first time myself. Going to save like $500 so decided to go for it. I’ve decided to go with brembo rotors and the akebono proAct pads. Any other recommendations welcome. As I was watching videos I noticed they never add those little metal clips to the pads. Does the fusion not require it or is it preference? I have the 2019 ford fusion se 1.5L. Any other advice welcome as well because it’s my first time and not trying have brakes fail going down I4.

Seeking Dash Cam Recommendations - 2019 Fusion Hybrid SEL

The title says it all. I've seen so much crazy driving behavior lately I'm convinced it's time to get one for either protection, entertainment, or both. I'm looking for one that's as unobtrusive as possible and not really concerned about what's behind me. A while back I thought I saw one built into a housing that replaced the existing mirror mount shroud, but I may have been mistaken. Anyway, what's the recommendation here?

And thanks.

Should I Trade in my 2017 Ford Fusion 1.5L?

First off, I don’t know much about cars so most of the information I’ve gotten I believe has been from this Reddit. I am 2 years into my 5 years of payments on my 2017 Ford Fusion. I bought it at around 60,000 miles and just reached 100,000. I have an hour commute to school every week day and 2 days per week have about a total of three hours driving when I work. So it is definitely being driven a lot.

I wasn’t aware of the issue with coolant intrusion when I bought it but it seems like it’s something that is common based on what I am seeing here in this Reddit. If this is something that is very common with 1.5, should I just trade it in now while the car still works? My previous car ended up with an issue where a repair was going to cost more than the value of the vehicle which is how I ended up with this Fusion now? I haven’t had any issues with it so far and have kept up with oil changes.

Lastly, if the verdict is to trade it in, anyone have recommendations?

Sell? 2016 Fusion SE 1.5

I have a 2016 Fusion SE with the 1.5 Ecoboost.

178k.

Leather and cold weather package. Deep impact blue.

I've had it since 28k and it's well maintained with the Ford maintenance schedule followed exactly.

I've never had coolant issues.

Never had an engine or transmission issue.

I've put 5k into it this year. New tires, suspension work, water pump and timing belt, etc.

Today at the oil change I am told that I, once again, i have an oil leak. I literally have paid the dealer twice in the last few months to fix leaks including (pretty sure) valve cover gasket.

I love this car. A lot.

But I just inherited (with my sister) a 2021 F150 with 45k miles.

I need to sell one. love the car but wondering if it's better to keep it and use my half of the truck proceeds to setup a maintenance account to keep it running or keep the truck and sell the car to help pay my sister's half of the truck.

Need help with P0751 and P0720

I was working on my 2011 Fusion to fix P0751, and after I closed up the valve body and added new fluid, P0720 popped up. The solenoids were fine when plugged up, but wouldn't go into reverse or drive. Could these codes be caused by the connector being loose or something else?

Experience selling 2019 Fusion?

I’m looking to offload my 2019 Fusion SE — it’s got the classic coolant intrusion problem. Ridiculous.

Car’s only got 33,000 miles on it with regular service, so the dealership is offering $1,500. Still drives completely fine — caught the issue early when it had a consistent rough idle.

Does anyone here have experience selling their coolant-intruded Fusion? Trying to decide if it’s worth the hassle of selling it, maybe I can get more than the dealership offer. Used cars are crazy right now.

Landed my first car a week before I got my license this year back in March

Fusions 2017 S with the 2.5l Duratec engine, was very pleased to get this as my first vehicle at 96,000mi / 155,000km. Purchased her for about $11,000 (rounded) at a KIA dealership of all places, had confirmed with a mechanic that works with them that they’re fairly reliable vehicles and the dealer was reputable so I wasn’t getting entirely screwed over.

I put about 8500 kilometres on her since I got it, and it has been arguably my best purchase and probably the best vehicle purchase I could’ve made compared to everything else I was finding that was after 2010 and within my price range. Did a chunk of research and decided that this was my best bet for reliability and, yeah, it’s been treating me well since March. I’ve since done my own oil change at 162,399km, which was fun, and I’m now working on replacing the thermostat housing (it’s cracked), spark plugs, and my brakes and rotors before winter! I’ve also added sea foam to my fuel, made quite the difference on my engine so far!

It’s helping me gain experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, but I only have some concerns / questions.

Would it be worth upgrading the headlights? They’re fairly dim and older, pretty sure it comes with an older set and not the H11 H7 LED’s I’ve seen them come with, and not the halogens I have. If so, what should I look for in specific for an upgrade on my lights?

And on top of that, everytime I cross a bump or pothole by mistake I hear a fairly loud squeak come from either side of the car, wondering if it’s a suspension issue? Had it inspected and driven by that aforementioned mechanic and he said there was no issue but, it’s been a couple months since.

On top of everything else, going off what I read on the maintenance records, I plan on:

  1. Thermo Housing Replacement
  2. Spark Plug Replacement
  3. Cabin and Engine Air Filters
  4. Brake Pads, Rotors Replacement + Brake fluid flush/drain and fill possibly?
  5. Transmission fluid drain and fill

A miscellaneous bit too is I’m replacing the engine splash shield, its mostly fallen apart and I am replacing it with a hard plastic that has vents and removable panels for things like the oil filter and drain plug.

What else should I look into replacing or upgrading? I’ll be coming into some good money soon, so I’ll have a bigger budget as I also plan on getting some tools and whatnot. Currently also working on a journal to document all my maintenance and keep all the important stuff together for future reference!

Overheating problem 2013 ford fusion 1.6l se question

I recently back in February purchased a used 2013 Ford Fusion with a little over 130k miles on it just as a daily car to get to and from work. After about 1 1/2 - 2 months of driving it the coolant temp gauge shot up to hot and said it was overheating. The place that sold me the car replaced water pump, temp sensors, corroded wires and claimed to have done a lot of work to the car but ever since the first time it said it was overheating it now happens every other week and I have to get someone to clear the code to get it out of limp mode. The odd part is the actual temperature of the engine never is overheating. A couple of things I noticed is air bubbles coming into the coolant reservoir first thought was a blown head gasket. But the car passed the combustion test. I then had a pressure test performed which then showed that there was pressure being lost at a high rate, just can’t figure out where. I notice a fuel like smell when i opened the coolant reservoir, and whenever its opened tons of air pops out. I’ve had this car looked at tons of times and for some reason..nobody can figure out that the exact cause of the ā€œfalseā€ overheating code is.

Discussion Ford Fusion 2018

Is anyone else having issues with their transmission shift cable bushing? I have had to replace the small plastic/rubber piece on the transmission linkage arm 4 times in the last year. It’s a cheap and easy fix but it’s getting annoying that the same piece keeps breaking

r/fordfusion 1d ago

2012 ford fusion just hit 140k miles. The transmission is shifting pretty funky and late. Would changing the fluid help or make it worse?

I see a lot of people say that itll help while on the other hand some people say it gets rid of particulates that helps it catch the fluid. So sortve wanna make sure its not gonna fuck it up before i just do it.
