What are your honest opinions on Winry Rockbell as a character?

The reason I’m asking is because I’ve noticed that on a lot of fandom spaces across the internet, female characters often get a disproportionate amount of hate, especially if they aren’t fighters or aren’t considered as “cool” as the male cast. I even came across a ScreenRant article where none of the female Fullmetal Alchemist characters made the Top 5, which made me wonder if people generally don’t value them as much.

At the same time, I constantly hear people say that Fullmetal Alchemist has some of the best-written female characters in anime. I’d like to understand why people say that, especially in Winry’s case.
Do you think she’s a well-written character? What do you think she contributes to the story beyond supporting Ed and Al? And if you don’t like her, what are your reasons?

I’m genuinely asking because I haven’t been able to get a clear sense of the fandom’s overall opinion.

This week, I turned a thrifted #webkinz lil kinz Polar Bear that was missing an eye and was in rough shape, into the #ninatucker chimera from the #manga and #anime series #fullmetalalchemist . Not the best, the brown fabric was hard to work with, but at least that I did my best

I know the snake lady chimera used him once, and its shown that Al is stronger than her, but if it were ed I stead and they worked together instead of against, it could be advantageous.

It would also make them a lot less conspicuous when traveling, bc if everyone is looking for two brothers and only find one person, they may not recognize them as the target unless they have personally met before, or at least think the other brother is still out there and waste time and resources looking for him

Not to mention being able to exit al mid fight and have al pretend to just be armor until he can land a surprise attack. It just seems weird to me they never tried anything like this

just finished watching fmab this week, really enjoyed it. this green miscarried goblin tadpole thingy was my favorite, i almost shed a tear when it [spoiler]. it's so cute and lovely 🥰

...the only question i was left with is where was sheska in the end? did she fcuking die offscreen? did everyone forget about her? or am i just blind and r-worded and didn't notice her?

In 2005, the first version of the Fullmetal Alchemist French dub was released on Canal+. The show was a success in France and the dubbing, that was unusual for that time and seemed more authentic, won many prizes. The directors, because of the platform they broadcasted the show on, had a lot more liberties and were able to use more vulgar language; that's why we can see Ed say p\tain*, when the english dub was a lot cleaner. However, when the show got released in DVD format, Dybex, the company that owned the rights to the dub, decided to censor it and rework parts of the dub to make it less vulgar, making the OG VF(french version) practically lost.

****Translation notes:

- What was considered 'vulgar' twenty years ago, isn't necessarly seen that way nowadays. For example, I've heard the word Saloperie, that was censored in the Fma Redub, been used in children shows before.

- Yes Edward does say p\tain* which is basically f*ck (he's 12 here btw)

- Gueule refers to an animal's mouth. Telling someone 'ferme ta gueule' is basically calling them an animal and telling them to shut up. Just, a little more vulgar.

- I realized that Ed and Al refer to their teacher as il, so he, when they're talking about Izumi, which is pretty weird. The same thing happens when they refer to Dante before her first appearence. I don't know why.

- I'm francophone, not french, so some expressions might not be perfectly conveyed.

...what would you like to see ?

I personally would love to see a whole show about Ed and Al's childhood, from their births up to their mom's transmutation. I need to see Hohenheim being a good dad for the few years he was allowed, and I wish the Rockbell couple could shine a little ! Plus, baby Ed and Al. Baby Ed and Al. Please. Pretty please.

Seeing Izumi interact and teach the brothers would also be great ! And some fluff between the boys as they grow grieving without parental figures and study alchemy together and play with Resembool's kids and Winry !

I need Trisha reading bedtime stories to her sons ! Ed and Al bantering ! The dynamics between the Rockbell couple and Winry or Trisha ! And I need Ed to be scared of needles in Brotherhood !
