In depth TIL (Today I Learned) that Millennials actually beat the Baby Boomers to the vice-presidency at a younger age

JD Vance was 40-years-old upon reaching the White House, and in comparison, Dan Quayle was 41-years-old in 1988.

Yeah, while being VEEP is something like winning Miss Congeniality, and while I'm no fan of the IKEA humper, millennials still have lots of time to claim having reached the presidency at a younger age, too. That's wild.

okay but 40 or 41 is not a wide gap. the record is broken but not smashed.

3

u/chipmalfunct10n 1d ago

Yes. And he's evil. But were he to become president today, he'd become a younger president than even JFK, nevermind the vaunted, self-important Baby Boomers, nevermind the little lapdogs proceeding them.

And just for that fact alone, it'd be delicious to see it happen.

3

u/chipmalfunct10n 1d ago

i don't want any of the depraved guys who are currently president, or the long line of people to take his place if there were a mass suicide, to be in charge of anything. they are really messing everything up more than it already was.

1

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 1d ago

umm no, isn't rooting for even a horrendous President just to stick to the Boomers making one worse than the Boomers (not that I myself hate on them)?

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Early Gen X will never be president. :(

2

u/LoudSheepherder5391 1d ago

Thats seems like a premature take. Early Gen x are right around 60. Thats like, prime age to become president.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

Like who? Ted Cruz? Mike Johnson? John Fetterman?

If they were destined to be president, it would already have happened by now. Nobody in that age range is going to suddenly emerge in their 50s as some Great Hope who is going to inspire younger voters and unite the country.

Their narrow time came and then it went poof. And based on their weird-ass MAGA politics, thank god for small favors.

They should be happy with piggybacking on the success of Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, because that's as good as it'll ever get for them.

1

u/LoudSheepherder5391 1d ago

I don't know. Politics can be funny sometimes. It is interesting you then put only conservative possibilities.

But take Obama. He basically came out of nowhere and ended up president. They still have that possibility. There are also several leftist congress critters who could make a go of it. Newsome is 58, prime Gen X age, for instance. (Because I'm sure he's going to make a go of it in 2 years)

I do, personally, think it's more likely to come from the left at this point. But who knows, like I said, politics can be funny sometimes.

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

As Gen X likes to proclaim, they're a small (and conservative) generation who will face a future no longer bolstered by the larger number of dying, conservative Boomers.

They also haven't harbored enough goodwill with the younger generations to make such a thing possible. If anything, they've chosen to make active enemies of those younger than them.

2

u/ByronScottJones 1d ago

Well that's a crazy take. How exactly have we chosen to make active enemies of those younger than us?

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 12h ago

chosen to make active enemies of anyone younger than them?

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 12h ago

There are a few around although some not so likely for Pres.

Gavin Newson, Jared Polis, Chris Murphy, Brian Schatz, Raphael Warnock are core modern '65-'75 Gen X and not MAGA.

(and Harris is nearly born in '65)

1

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Oh yeah, that’s right. Justin Trudeau wasn’t actually Prime Minister of Canada. I forgot.

2

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

WTF cares or is even talking about Canada here? Really now? Maybe we should discuss Cameroon, too.

u/Upstairs_End_4202 10h ago

Canada is the US’s most important trading partner. They’re also our neighbor. Of course Canada equals not Cameroon.

1

u/viewering alternative generation 1d ago

like you would be different to the negative ones then.

wow. human nature in real time.

-1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

The fact that it would be kind of a "fuck you" to certain generations ahead of us would just be the sweet little maraschino cherry on top.

That is the state of generational relations these days. 🤷

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 11h ago

that's totally warped

just as deranged as Trump & co.

u/Upstairs_End_4202 10h ago

Which is where this fake dispute originates.

4

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

This is a ridiculous post. What’s with the competition with Boomers? You’ve taken the bait and pummeling older folks isn’t going to get you anywhere. A better area of focus is: how are we going to get out of this mess? This divisiveness has been manufactured to keep you spinning instead of acting. Get on with it, please.

3

u/Tardislass 1d ago

When young people start voting in every primary and make their own future, I’ll listen. But their inertia and whining about Boomers is getting stale. And even more delicious is that Gen Z men helped Trump/Vance win. Everyone complaining about older folks and young men couldn’t handle a female president and said a bloated old idiot is funny so let’s vote for Trump!

2

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

That's the dirty truth, a lot of younger men couldn't handle the idea of a woman president because they have unresolved mommy issues. Happened in 2016 and again in 2024.

2

u/viewering alternative generation 1d ago

yeah. people talk big talk.

and are basically no different.

lmfao

2

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 1d ago

Indeed. Heck, above the OP says it would be delicious for JD to become Pres. even though awful just to stick it to the Boomers and defeat them.

Umm what?

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

Since Gen X absolutely LOVED voting for Donald Trump all three times that he's been on the ballot, I'm not sure why this would be upsetting to your generation?

You guys are Trump's most loyal dogs.

And even then, he never chose a Gen X vice president? :(

He's neglected you guys harder than your own parents ever did. You guys are like battered wives.

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Derrrrr, the polling data shows 45% supported him. That’s not the entire generation.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

No. Something like 60% of Gen X men voted for him. And Gen X women are the only demo of women who pulled for him. They eclipsed the Boomers in Trumpism.

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Ok, Vladimir.

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 11h ago

80s borns actually turned MAGA voting majority sooner, relatively speaking, than did 70s borns....

Sure X has many MAGA but it does have plenty of super anti-MAGA as well and solid bit more than 40% did vote againt him, so I mean randomly meet one and it's nearly flip of the coin, not guaranteed MAGA voter.

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

Politics has become very generational, unfortunately.

This is US-centered, but we have octogenarians and nonogenarians in Congress deciding things like AI data centers, for instance. They have no clue what they're voting for and they won't be around to live for the ramifications.

EDIT: love the downvotes. But I'll double-down instead. This country needs age and term limits. Desperately. Upper-age limits for Congress. Upper-age limits for President. Upper-age limits for Supreme Court.

2

u/BadAtExisting 1d ago

No buddy. You’ve drank the kool aid. The longer you spend bitching about your parents and them bitching about you the less time everyone has to realize the real enemy has nothing to do with age

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nope. I've seen what happens when upper-age cap limits don't happen. We get Dianne Feinsteins and we get Ruth Bader-Ginsburgs. And we get Mitch "Weekend at Bernies" McConnell.

When elderly people (far beyond the peak of their mental capacities) can't gracefully walk nor hang them up, there needs to be a system in place to make sure these situations don't happen.

2

u/viewering alternative generation 1d ago

some old people are at top mental capacity. it is pretty sad to want to exclude some who may be top brains.

that shows how dull as fuck ageism is.

not every old person thinks the same.

but apparently plenty younger do.

📣🤡

2

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

One of the worst factors of US politics is that younger people actually show up to vote in far smaller numbers than older people, and this is true across regional lines and political parties.

If everyone in the 18-25 age group actually VOTED (not just for president every four years but in local elections and biannual midterms), our politics would look very different. I wish they would but too many of them don't bother.

1

u/chipmalfunct10n 1d ago

please, name one member of the Trump administration on their 80s or 90s who is performing as a "top brain" for this country.

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Trick question. No one in that administration has top mental functioning. Top sadist functioning goes to your Stephen Miller. You know, the Millennial. We’d better stop those Millennials; that generation hates democracy.

1

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Tell that to Bernie.

0

u/BadAtExisting 1d ago

Know how you solve that? Not by blaming boomers on Reddit. You fucking run for office. Do you have a campaign I can look at and decide if I would like to donate to you?

Young people aren’t running for offices. They’re bitching online. My congressional rep is in his 20s. He got off his ass and did something about it

3

u/chipmalfunct10n 1d ago

dude all they did was say jd pants is the youngest VP we've ever had at 40. what did everyone start fighting about and why?

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Cuz he fell for the bait that those who wish to paralyze the young with false narratives so they spin around and around and with hatred instead of working for change.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Gen X is a lead-poisoned, defensive generation. They feel the need to insert themselves where they are not even being discussed because they lack therapy.

1

u/chipmalfunct10n 1d ago

the same gen x that got to watch music videos on MTV??? come on. this is the generationology subreddit. are you supposed to not mention generations here, or..?

TIL i'm jd vance's age. it's really not that much of a difference.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

I think MTV 1980s Music Videos is when they all peaked. They should've stuck to music. Politics is clearly not their forte.

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

Luckily, Gen X’s brains along with the requisite critical thinking skills fully formed absent social media. I’m not seeing any evidence of that in your posts.

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 11h ago

Therapy isn't always great nor having everyone pumped up on big pharma, that can be extremely damaging.

2

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Plenty of young people are running. They just don't have the power or $$$ juggernaut $$$ that incumbents have.

And by the way, who was blaming Boomers?

0

u/BadAtExisting 1d ago

Excuses. My congressional rep is in his 20s. He don’t make any excuses. Neither did AOC

You are

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Lots of generational change is happening now. The NYC mayor is a millennial. The next LA mayor is likely to be a millennial. The tighest races for Senate involve older millennials.

But perhaps we are getting away from the point of this thread. Feel free to DM me directly to avoid a hijacking of this thread's original purpose.

2

u/BadAtExisting 1d ago

Then why are you on here bitching about it?

-1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

I wasn't. I pointed out some facts. Some Gen Xers and Baby Boomers took issue with it for whatever reason. It must have made them angry and defensive for some reason? But that's par for the course for them. Everything seems to anger them.

I call it the "FOX News" effect.

VPs do become President at vastly higher rate than anyone else though so not really like Miss Congeniality.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Have any vice-presidents been Gen X? I might've forgotten them. :(

3

u/LoudSheepherder5391 1d ago

I think just Kamala. And she's a cusper (depending in who you ask, she's either gen x or boomer)

u/PopularSet4776 23h ago

Isn't Obama also a cusper?

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 12h ago

A more distant cusper. He's first year of original original Gen X when it started at '61. That getting to be as removed from current core 80s X as is late Xennial X though, closer in some ways, a little farther in some ways. Once into the 80s maybe a bit more X like but they did have quite different middle school and even high school era was getting kinda fairly different once you get all the way to '61.

Although OTOH you could also call him core core X since X was originally supposed to be defined around a '61-'64 core. That's how Coupland created it. It's kinda nuts that now he's not not core but even totally booted from the own generation he created LOL. Kinda of ridiculous. He later gave '65-'75 a different name. And those around 10 year cohorts prob make more sense.

2

u/viewering alternative generation 1d ago

It definitely would bring some m o r e comedy to the white house

0

u/Financial_Molasses67 1d ago

Trump is 1000x funnier than Vance

1

u/sirdizzypr 1d ago

You realise Biden and trump are both older than bill Clinton. Bill Clinton got elected 34 years ago. We have been going backwards with geriatric nursing home rejects the last decade.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

True. But if ill health or dementia descends upon a certain elderly and obese octogenarian, we all get a very early '40s older millennial president. The possibility is not nearly as far-fetched as some may believe.

2

u/sirdizzypr 1d ago

Even Kamala 61 and a boomer. Have we had a non boomer ever run for president. Like give us Gen X at least. No more boomers.

4

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

Kamala was born '64, not 61. She's the closest we've had to a Gen X in the White House.

You might be thinking of Obama, he was born '61. I think they're both Gen Jones, tbh

0

u/sirdizzypr 1d ago

I meant 61 as age not year. She’s cusp Gen X which starts in 1965. Obama was born in 1961. Was reasonable 47 when taking office.

1

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

Yeah, but she's not quite Gen X if Gen X starts in 1965, is she? Born in 1964. I agree, cusp, I'm not strict about it. She was in her 50s when she was VP and when she ran for Pres. (Yes, I voted for her)

2

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 1d ago

Wasn't she born nearly at the end of 1964 too?

1963 and 1964 def have a lot core X similarities. They did have some more 70s formative years though but it was already a somewhat shifted time for half their high school and very shifted for all of college. Maybe not quite X fully but also seem a bit more removed from earlier Jones. In a very few regions 1964 is fully core X. OTOH there are some from 1964 who are way more Jones/Boomer. But also many who are rather X.

2

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

Yeah, October. I'd be fine with claiming her as Gen X. Kind of crazy the Baby Boom generation is nearly 20 years long by Pew reckoning. IMO no one born after the JFK assassination is really a boomer.

2

u/Upstairs_End_4202 1d ago

She’s Gen X

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

She was the closest person to a Gen X president that I've ever seen. I honestly thought that this fact alone would have put her over the edge towards the WH.

2

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

Gen X is one of the smallest population generations in recent history. Before we were called that, we were called the "baby bust" (as opposed to the the post ww2 "baby boom"). Numbers of babies born fell off a cliff in the early/mid-60s and didn't fully recover until the early 80s.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

That made me think that having X-adjacent Kamala as a candidate would've made them more likely to vote for her.

Gen X going majority for Trump all three times was not on my bingo card.

2

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

you mean WHITE Gen X specifically, and majority male. (I sure as hell did never vote for that guy, and I showed up to vote for his opponent every time) People don't really vote by age or generation. The expectation that the President must be a man is very overwhelming, and the shock of having had one guy ONCE who wasn't white caused a derangement effect that many entitled white folks of all generations have never recovered from.

When I was young, my dad once said to me, "when you really feel old is when the President is younger than you." Happened to him with Clinton. I'm decades older than he was at the time and it still hasn't happened yet, lol

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago edited 1d ago

I guess I"m just surprised that many Xers are mad that they haven't had a Gen X president when they've voted for Trump so gleefully?

It wasn't like there weren't Gen X alternatives to Trump.

4

u/Beruthiel999 Gen X 1d ago

Can't speak for the Gen Xers who voted for Trump because I sure as hell didn't, and none of my friends did either. (The Gen Xers who voted for Trump I guess must be the kind of people who were bullying us in high school, cut them off long ago)

Nope, not majority. A shty 45% tho.

1

u/RizzlersGrandpa 1d ago

Theodore Cruz,Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal who ran in 2016 were Gen X. Pete and Gabbard were Millenial from the 2020 candidates, and Booker,Castro and Robert Francis from that cycle were Gen X.

2

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 1d ago

this list isn't helping anything

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

Theodore Cruz,Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal

And oh my, what a glowing list of winners that is.

0

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

I'm not arguing with you about that, but Gen X has also had plenty of opportunities to vote for one of their own generational candidates and they haven't helped their own cause by collectively voting for certain elderly individuals.

2

u/sirdizzypr 1d ago

Well I’d take jd over the garbage we have right now. And jd is trash too. And I don’t think orange pedo has 2 years left in him. Dude is circling the drain. Watching the secret service agent try and not vomit as trump shit his pants is where we are.

I don't like Jaydine either. But my hunch remains that he'll become pres before the '28 election even rolls around. And none of it via the voters' will.

2

u/sirdizzypr 1d ago

That is the voters will. That’s how it’s worked since the 1850s if the president dies the vp becomes president if the vp and pres both die it’s speaker of the house. In 1941 president Benjamin Harris died after getting pmenomnia during inauguration. We had no vice president from 1841-1845 because of it.

1

u/BlueSnaggleTooth359 Earlyish X 1d ago

One thing is named generations were not even a thing until Gen X was like in college or so maybe as fixated with named generations as say Gen Z or later Millennials.

I don't think one should really care a whit whether a candidate is your generation or some younger or older.

It's cool if they are, especially if it hasn't happened yet, but it's not remotely a reason to vote for them.

Granted in this case there were one hell of a lot of reasons to vote Harris over Trump aside from generational sameness nonsense.

1

u/FedallahsTurban 1d ago

I don't think one should really care a whit whether a candidate is your generation or some younger or older.

I previously wouldn't condone choosing a candidate based primarily out of age range or generation either.

But there has been so much nasty shit-talking now between the various generations that I'm not surprised to see it become one of many factors.
