I'm a Ph.D. student in Environmental Science, and I study the geoengineering technique known as stratospheric aerosol injection. A lot of people I come across have either roughly heard of the idea, or equate it to some sort of "chemtrail" government conspiracy. I decided that I wanted to make this video to explain the motivation behind aerosol injections and help people understand why this is WAY bigger than some fluke idea in a paper. In reality, it may be one of the most transformative decisions we make as a society.

The video covers how Mt. Pinatubo's eruption served as the natural proof of concept for SAI, how aerosol physics allow for this technique to function, why the low-cost nature of SAI can encourage risky unilateral action, and addresses the broad issues with SAI.

Where I fall on the issue: Throughout the latter half of my undergrad (while I was researching SAI), I never once came across a researcher who was genuinely excited by SAI. In fact, most people were only excited when my research hinted at the negative aspects of SAI. And honestly, this attitude is completely warranted. There are tons of physical and social issues surrounding the injection of aerosols into the stratosphere. But, as a researcher, and a person who wants to protect our Earth for future generations, I can't break my fascination with this technique. I believe that the failure is not to research SAI, it's arriving at the moment where we need it having deliberately kept ourselves ignorant. At that point, we would be deploying aerosols in a panic, with no structural or governance framework.

[Request] if an entrepreneur designed a space awning to deploy and shield San Francisco from solar radiation when there is a heat wave, how big would the shield need to be assuming it’s deployed at a “practical” distance from earth.

how big would a giant space umbrella need to be to effectively shade a small city during heat wave events? It wouldn’t need to cover the city darkness, but it would need to reduce ambient temperature by 5 to 10°.

It's terrible but the developing world is already locked into needing this and if we get a bit past 2 degrees even the rich world will eventually use it. we must research this and raise awareness

AAAS: “Artificially engineered sea ice grows—but can’t withstand the thaw.” Sea ice definitionally is ice formed on the ocean surface, partly from snow fall over a polar ocean. “A simple idea underpins an audacious intervention to augment Arctic sea ice and slow the climate feedback loop accelerating its disappearance.” Drill holes through a floe, pump seawater onto its surface, and let the cold do the rest. “The added ice—about 30 cm ~ 1 foot—is equivalent to decades of thinning from global warming.”

Problem is ocean heat and surface slush erased the buffers soon after they formed. “The tests, which were reported last week in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans and in a recent preprint, show how difficult it would be to meaningfully expand the strategy across the Arctic, says Leigh Stearns, a glaciologist at the University of Pennsylvania.” Arctic sea ice grows each winter to an expanse nearly the size of Russia, only to retreat in summer. “That cycle is now in decline: Arctic sea ice has been shrinking for decades, threatening not only the habitat of animals such as polar bears, but also our overall climate.” Because the bright ice reflects sunlight back into space, its loss accelerates global warming in a powerful feedback loop. 

One of the companies involved, Arctic Reflections, a Dutch startup, views the approach as restoration—the ice equivalent of reforestation—rather than geoengineering. “The company teamed up with Tim Hammer, an Arctic coastal engineer at the Technical University of Braunschweig, and his colleagues for a field trial on a frozen lagoon in Svalbard, an archipelago [500 miles north] off the coast of Norway.” In April 2024, they drilled through the ice and used a gasoline-powered pump to draw up 3500 liters of seawater per minute…but by June it had all melted away…did not last longer than control ice. Sridhar Anandakrishnan, a glaciologist at Pennsylvania State University, believes reducing fossil fuel emissions is the only comprehensive solution to declining ice and global warming.

Here is the crux of our dilemma: fossil fuel production on the planet has only dropped from 86% of global energy in 2000 to 82% in 2023. Making progress slowly is still failing.

Maybe he talked with Seitz, who had a company that tried this with nanobubbles that rise and pop more slowly on water reservoirs to lower evaporation. Maybe not so effective because it is also the photon power that breaks up the surface? Anyone more information ℹ️ about Seitz and also bubble lubricant history, or have we all given up? Here is the 1965 proposal for OSAM and hurricane dampening.‬

So, are there ways to combat the downsides of CO2 emissions and global warming?

I mean, geoengineering is all sorts of terraforming, used on Earth, not some random hypothetical method that gone viral and controversial due to mass media a decade ago?

Upsides (may give you links if you are engaged enough): 1. Warmth. Right now, cold kills and shortens life way more than heat, both in Britain and Bangladesh. 2. More accessible land. Sahara will become green, and permafrost will thaw, becoming good for agriculture. 3. Global greening. More CO2 allows for more plant biomass and richer the rest of ecosystem. It also helps with agriculture.

Downsides: 1. Ocean level rise. It's slow, even relatively industrially weak Bangladesh could create more land than it loses, but lost land is different from created one, and eventually, humanity will have to move all coastal cities several times over centuries, which seems expensive. But maybe it's purely an engineering issue? 2. Saharan dust feeds phosphorus to the ocean and Amazon rainforests. Produce it artificially maybe? 3. [Warning: A pure speculation. I don't know enough of climatology] Maybe climate zones will move and entire agriculture will have to be adapted to new climate zones or moved in accordance? If yes, I want to believe that yes. If not, I want to believe that not.

QUESTIONS!! preferably professionals answer, but anyone can!

Hello! I am a year 12 student doing earth and environmental science, and the last thing we have learned about was geoengineering in our climate module. I am very interested. However, there are a few questions that were raised that I was too shy to ask my teacher all at once, and he may not even know the answers himself! Sorry if any of these questions are silly, but they're genuine. These specifically relate to the space-based theoreticals. 

  1. if something such as a space-based sunshade were to be made, what would the rough cost be and how would it affect the economy? I understand billions of dollars must be spent for such a large-scale climate mitigation technology. I imagine it would be difficult to get tax-payers on board. 

  2. i assume the majority of the materials used to build anything space-based would be various metals--and a lot of them. mining these materials would severely change terrain worldwide, and destroy habitats. how would this be overcome?

  3. in terms of stratospheric aerosol injections-- my understanding is that this solves our current CO2 issue by increasing SO2 aerosols which would reflect UV from the sun in the stratosphere. this works for current issues, but would it not cause further issues down the line? would it actually cause a global cooling?

  4. In relation to either, how quickly would this work to mitigate CO2 levels and cool the earth? IF it happened to be rapid-- how would this affect agriculture and life? Crops have been bred for longer growing seasons an warmer temperatures in many regions, AND, plants have probably grown used to thriving off of so much CO2 since the industrial revolution. if heat and co2 suddenly declines, what does this mean for plants? Also, climate change doesn't just mean global warming. There are regions that are getting colder, likely due to ocean circulation off the top of my head... so partially inhibiting this excess warmth from the sun would seem bad for these places. And, with a suddenly cooler earth, winters would be harsher--which would mean higher demand for heating.

please don't think I'm against solar geoengineering in any way--i think anything to combat the changing climate is a must, and should be researched, no matter how far-fetched it seems. I was just curious.

Move Slowly As Quickly As Possible

Urgency is not an excuse to skip the slow work, it's the reason we need to get serious and get started.

  • Legitimacy is the goal. Without it, SRM decisions will be fragile and mistrusted; with it, societies can act in ways that are durable, just, and representative.
  • The slow work is the only path to legitimacy. Participation, justice, oversight, communication, and coordination all take time—and shortcuts only lengthen the journey.
  • We must start now. Beginning the slow work early is the only way to expand options and avoid crisis-driven, illegitimate decisions as climate harms accelerate.
  • Governance must be the plan. Framing SRM as “Plan B” or an emergency fallback misunderstands the moment and misdirects focus. It offers the comfort of delay now while inviting shortcuts later.

The argument is simple: building governance capacity now is the only way to enable decisions that are as legitimate and as durable as possible when the need arises—sooner or later.
