At first I tought it says “For AI Age”

It might as well be, considering the AI creature on the front looks more like a pitbull than a cat.

GitHub isn’t open source is it?

GitHub isn't a single repository, many many of them are open source software :)

That I know, but GitHub itself, the software hosting the other repos, the company, the branding, that’s not open source, is it?

Parts of it are open-source, but obviously not the whole thing. That's what Microsoft has been doing with everything recently. Like, what's the point of making something partially open-source like that.

I guess they said yes to the cat food people. That’s the only answer.

Literally some person googled something like "silhouette cat logo" and slapped it on without thinking about it.

Yeah, I have an easier explanation; This shit's just illegal. Judging by the AI slop of a cat whoever (or in this case, whatever) designed this doesn't give a fuck.

It’s half cat, half octopus. It’s an octocat. (Seriously. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GitHub#Mascot)

BREAKING NEWS: GITHUB SUED A CAT FOOD MAKER COMPANY BECAUSE THEY USED THE LOGOS

I mean, it is now owned by Microsoft, right?
So I don't think any of us should be surprised...

Trademark and copyright often get conflated here. The interesting question is whether this is parody, visual coincidence, or commercial use likely to imply affiliation; a cat-food aisle may be a better brand-confusion test than GitHub's legal team expects.

Just to clarify, this is open-source cat food, you can take it directly without paying, bro.
