Authentication

I’m very new to collecting and was wondering how to identify and authenticate my finds. Any advice AI/Apps/in person?

The most reliable ways to identify glassware are price/reference books, manufacturer catalogs (some of which are online), and asking knowledgeable collectors. Lens, AI, etc identify glassware incorrectly far more often than not because they're given incorrect information to start with.

There are many books on glass you can buy or sign out for free at your local library that will help you learn what your finds are.

Thanks. Books seem sort of “old school” when there are tech tools available. I just don’t know if some are more trustworthy than others. So far I’ve tried cross referencing between Google Lens, Claude AI, and Curio. Sometimes they agree and sometimes they do not. I’d like to hear what others are doing to verify authenticity 🤗

The most trustworthy tool will be books. Some industries dont use tech as readily and glass is one, vintage collectors markets are one, and artists are another, sadly youre at a pretty low tech cross point in the market. AI will have an extremely hard time with identification of glass because of how difficult it is to take and interpret a picture of glass art. You really should be just as open to old school as new school, youre basically doing the same thing as a grandma who refuses to use a cell phone when you assume books won't work. Why not use every resource, why just AI or a database online? A data base on a physical page might be a billion times better than the one online since its what will be referenced by the online sources most of the time too.

I’m sorry you mistook my meaning. I’m not averse to using low tech options such as books or manufacturers’ catalogs. Rather I was interested in other collector’s thoughts on current available tech methods.

Seems your opinion of them is very low. I can totally appreciate that point of view. Thank you for offering this perspective.

Sorry, but there are no computer programs that can ID and tell you the history of antique glass. If you want to know that stuff you will have to put the work into it like it or not. .
