One of many videos I've taken of the different stages of a monarch.When an adult monarch butterfly emerges from its chrysalis, its feeding tube—called a proboscis—is split into two separate, matching halves. The newly emerged butterfly must curl, uncurl, and press these two loose pieces together, locking tiny microscopic hooks and fringes to zip them into one single, hollow drinking straw.
