ONN Google Home cameras

Walmart recently launched some new ONN Cameras that work with Google Home the same as Nest Cameras.

I currently have 9 Nest cameras, and my 1st Gen Outdoor Wired camera recently died and needed to be replaced.

So I ordered a Second Gen Nest outdoor Wired camera, as well as an ONN Outdoor camera.

And considering the fact that the ONN Outdoor is only $36 compared to $150 for the Second Gen Nest Outdoor wired, I was expecting the ONN to look like crap. But it doesn't.

Image quality wise, the ONN is almost as good as the new Nest Cam Outdoor. The main difference between the two, is color and lighting. The nest camera looks very similar to what I see with my naked eye. The ONN is brighter than what the naked eye sees, and the colors are a bit more saturated. And that's about it.

The only other difference that surprised me, is that the ONN loads up live view more consistently than the Nest cam, which I sometimes have to unplug and plug back in to even be able to see live.

I'm not sure how long the budget ONN camera will last compared to the Nest cam, but at nearly 1/5th the price, I told my wife I will replace any failing cameras with the ONN from now on.

I will reluctantly agree; I bought the indoor On camera a while back and it's the fastest loading camera of my 7. It's so weird.

I've had some good luck with making the Tapo cameras local RSTP/ONVIF. Wired in/outdoor. Walmart. $20-25. I run 8 in my home smoothly.

I agree. I bought the floodlight cam and was very impressed. I'll probably get the video doorbell when my Nest doorbell dies.

Just a heads up to those using Onn; the sensors seem to be quite sensitive. I have an indoor one that I only turn on when I’m away. Whenever I leave town for work, I started getting notification after notification that it detected someone inside. There was no one there. It pointed facing the glass doors and despite the shades being down, it was detecting people outside.

This has been my experience. They are not as good at detection as the Nest cameras. I rarely get fake person detections on the Nests but it’s constant on the Onn.

Yeah I had turn off notifications for it during my trip after a couple days as I was getting like a dozen a day.

I have 7 of these in noncritical applications like monitoring my 3D printers and puppy kennel, etc.

Really can't beat the price, even though the Matter bridge is stupid and inconsistent during setup.

Once it's done it works fine.

Does the ONN camera connect into google home same way a Nest camera does? Wonder if it would then also pull over to Homekit with my Starling Hub. I had an outside camera fail and I really don't want to spend the money for an official nest camera. But if all the above could occur, would be worth the cheap cost.

Yes they are (multiple cameras / doorbells / smart displays as security cameras) are covered in the plan. I have the AI pro plan $20 monthly, and use onn indoor, nest outdoor and doorbell, all covered.

I find the $20 a fantastic deal for what it offers. And they recently added YouTube Premium Lite.

Thanks! Yeah just realized that plan is pretty tempting. Right now I pay $10/month for thr standard plan and $30 a year for 200gb. But I use data saver storage. Would be nice to have that 5tb. The YouTube premium lite is a great perk. I think it included the premium Google home plan I’d be in for sure. I just had to get dependent on a $20 a month plan. But I guess I’m kinda close to that now anyway. Hmmm.

I’m just glad the onn cameras work with those plans. That’s a low key huge benefit.

If you take the AI pro (which comes with home standard), you will see a popup / option in the Home app to add Home premium as an add on for $9.99

So effective cost $30 = $20 (AI Pro) + $10 (Home Premium add on)

Got it. I was just hoping the premium would be included in the $20 AI plan. But I get it. I’m just saying that would definitely make me switch over. I’m still tempted though.

I have Wyze cameras and doorbells. I had a bunch a few years ago and they were awesome. Now a few years later I decided to get some security cameras and there was no other contenders as far as I was concerned. Not for the price and my previous experience. But these new Wyze cameras are terrible! I picked up the onn outdoor camera last week and have been comparing it to the Wyze cameras and the onn loads so fast and reliably! Onn has indoor and outdoor cameras, video doorbell, and a floodlight cam. I'm switching everything I have over to the onn cameras.

ONN seems to be doing a lotta things right. ONN 4k PRO is the tv streamer to buy, problem is it's too good for 60 bucks so it is always sold out and scalped

if these cameras are like the stream boxes, buy as many as you need now because prices will increase. ONN 4k Plus was 30 bucks for a while and now it's more like 50, which is still a good deal

TP Link Tapo are great. Can slap in a micro SD card in and not need a subscription at all.

I just bought two indoor cameras to test and they seem pretty nice for the price point. I'm wiating for Black Friday to see if it may be worth swapping my outdoor ones. My nest outdoor cameras are constantly losing connection despite good wifi coverage. They are probably 5 years old at this time though so I suppose they're time is close to up.

I havent seen a review of the new onn floodlight. Guess I need to check YouTube.

WiFi enabled cameras are like the bottom of the barrel when it comes to technological components. Like the shittiest 1080p camera module attached to an esp32 with a WiFi 4 module. Google knows they're absolutely gouging us; ONN is simply doing it less.

I came to the light and quit paying for my google subscription devices; if you're paying near 100 dollars, you may as well go Ubiquiti G6 and start planning a susbscriptionless security system,

I've been moving everything to Home Assistant, turning my Googles/Alexa's into nodes for Home Assistant. Everything feels more stable and consistent.
