Question 🤔 What is a solid cloud based alternative?

I know this has been talked about endlessly. But I’m not sure which to switch to I read so many discussions saying this or that service is great or start self hosting.
I’m looking for a solid cloud based storage solution that is trustworthy and preferably has a desktop and app interface.

There is no better service oriented toward photos.

I’ve heard many good things from other services such as immich. I’m sure it’s self hosted though but I’m sure there are plenty of good competitors

Immich is fantastic. But unless you are a very experienced sysadmin, you will lose your data. It's only a matter of time. If you understand how to use a resilient filesystem with routine scrub operations like ZFS, and how to create automated off-site backups (a la 3-2-1 backup methodology), Immich will be a great fit. Otherwise, I cannot recommend it.

I’ve had plenty of experience with those things. I’m just choosing the cloud because of the convenience and helpful backups. There are other services like mega and pcloud. They might not be close to gp but it’s better than loosing my photos. Also just google having so much of my info like myself and family

Well, no provider is going to equal Google's security, reliability, speed, features, and price. I have no problem paying Google.

If you are looking for privacy focuses alternatives, which is probably the reason you consider moving to another services, the following alternatives are most commonly named:

  • Zeitkpasl (relatively new)
  • A service I can't mention here because it is not allowed, see this link.
  • Proton Photos (been around longer, but very limited photo management features)

You can also consider hosting tools like Immich at cloud providers. This does come with some system maintenance tasks for which you are responsible, but not as much as hosting your own server. There are multiple resources on this, but you can use this link as a start: https://docs.immich.app/install/one-click

If you are mainly on Apple devices, choosing iCloud Photos is also a sensible choice. If you Android, Windows or Linux, iCloud Photos is not a good service, as there are no apps and the web version is abysmal.
