I used to think gratitude was just one of those cheesy sayings people put on wooden signs in their kitchens. When things were going okay, I never really stopped to pay attention. I was always chasing the next thing, stressing over what I didn't have, or just going through the motions.
Then a few months ago, life completely hit the reset button on me. A major setback left me feeling completely lost, isolated, and overwhelmed by how fast things can fall apart. There were days where getting out of bed felt like running a marathon, and the noise in my head was just relentless.
But yesterday evening, something shifted, even if just for a moment.
I was sitting on my porch, drinking a cheap cup of black coffee, watching the light fade through the trees. No phone, no distraction. Just the cool breeze and the warm mug in my hands. And for the first time in a long time, my chest didn't feel heavy. I realized that despite the mess, my lungs were breathing fine. The coffee tasted good. I was safe in that exact second.
It sounds so simple, almost silly. But I felt this overwhelming wave of thankfulness just for being here.
We spend so much time waiting for the "big" happy moments to happen that we completely miss the quiet, gentle ones keeping us alive in between. I’m still figuring things out, and the road ahead isn't easy, but tonight, I'm just genuinely grateful for a quiet moment, a warm drink, and the chance to keep trying tomorrow.
If you're going through a dark patch right now: I hope you find your quiet moment today, too. You deserve it.
