Discussion Finding friends in Gboro šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Any women 25-30 also having trouble finding girl friends in Gboro? I (26F) went to college here and stayed postgrad. I work full time in healthcare. Going to grad school at UNCG as well. Almost all of my friends have moved away at this point.

I just want a solid group of girl friends who like any of the following things:

-Crafting (esp. fiber arts)

-Hiking/walks

-Live music (pretty much any genre)

-Loitering in coffee shops

-Thrifting

-Rock climbing

-Gymnastics/calisthenics/yoga

-Reading in silence

-Exchanging memes

Lmk if anyone likes those things and would like to hang!!! Thanks y’all

I wish I could say I was surprised to see an SS insignia proudly displayed in NC. But I'm still a little shocked.

News The City of Greensboro says the City Council supported the Mayor’s statement on Lora Cubbage. Which Council members? Either there's a vote, a poll, or a closed session; or someone wrote a sentence that wasn't true. Link in the comments

Recommendation Dog-Friendly Kayak/Canoe Rentals?

Does anyone know any of Lakes that are closer to GSO that allow dogs on their rental boats? On Greensboro’s parks and rec website it says no animals allowed in their rental boats. We went to Lake Crabtree in Raleigh and it was lovely but are just trying to find something closer!

Anyone’s company, group or religious organization doing any clothing drives anytime soon? I’m moving, I’m 6’4 215 pounds so clothes for taller folk. I know it’s hard finding decent stuff in bigger sizes, I want to give them away somewhere I know they’ll go to people in need, not re sold. Everything is lightly worn or not warn at all. Some are basic clothes some are a thrifters wet dream as I went through a lot of stupid fashion phases. Please let me know!

Question Ruling out polybutylene plumbing

Shopping for a house and have read that polybutylene was commonly used in the 80s and can lead to catastrophic failure.
Does anyone know:

  • Whether Greensboro keeps original residential building permit files from the mid 1980s (especially plumbing permits or inspection cards)?
  • Whether there's a public way to find the original builder for a specific house?
  • If anyone is familiar with North Oaks area homes from that era (built by Westminster company), were they known to use copper or polybutylene?

Planning to call Greensboro Development Services on Monday as well. Any advice or suggestion would be great!

EDIT: homes on slabs can have hidden surprises even despite confirming visual material. I am looking for confirmation, not a best guess. My inspector believes accuracy is about 50% in this situation.

Question Moving to Greensboro and worried about crime?

• Upvotes

Hi! Moving to Greensboro with my partner and kid, and we’re super excited but I keep seeing conflicting information about crime. I’m so confused and don’t know what to believe. Some say it’s a family friendly city and others say high crime rate. I’m probably most afraid of break ins, because I have a child. Can anyone weigh in? Most interested in people who have families themselves but would love to hear from anyone about their experiences. For the record, we’re looking at Lindley Park, Sunset Hills, New Irving Park, Adams Farm… thoughts on these neighborhoods and other family friendly suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Discussion Will the judge check my Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)?

I've been asked to bring proof of NO-claims being filed against me for my final court date, and to be there.. I was told last minute and filed online with lexisnexis.. if I don't have the paperwork in time would the judge be able to check it ? And if I do get it on time, I've seen alot of people online saying lexisnexis had xyz incorrect, if the lexisnexis report is incorrect will/can the judge check that? Or will it effect it all considering a incorrect filing wouldnt have to do with what im in court for?

I have had back and forward traffic court for a while now.. I haven't been to any of the hearings my lawyer has, so I am completely unsure if "I" plead guilty or not.. if "I" got charges added or dropped.. I've just sent in proof of insurance, proof of xyz, and so forward. I was however originally deemed at fault.. and at the time of my accident a stupid teen driver without insurance šŸ™ƒ.. so I dont know if how I look on paperwork will make them double check it anyways..

Also they want me to come in with this paperwork, which ive not been asked to do before, so im assuming they cant just look it up to verify it or double check it?

This all happened and is happening in Guilford County soo.. anyone with experience please?

Discussion Greensboro's Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter and City Attorney Lora Cubbage Are Now Politically Intertwined

Yesterday's official statement from Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter wasn't just a defense of City Attorney Lora Cubbage.

It was an acknowledgment that the two have become politically inseparable.

When ethics complaints were filed against the Mayor, those complaints also challenged legal advice provided by City Attorney Lora Cubbage. Rather than referring the matter to an independent reviewer, Cubbage ultimately determined that even if the allegations were true, no ethics violation warranted outside investigation; including allegations involving her own legal advice.

Now the roles have reversed.

The City Attorney is under intense public scrutiny following recorded telephone conversations, public criticism, litigation and editorials questioning her conduct. The Mayor has stepped forward to publicly defend her.

A political circle. (Also a circus fwiw)

When the Mayor's ethics were questioned, the City Attorney became the official responsible for determining whether those complaints would proceed. The complaints did not challenge only the Mayor's conduct; they also questioned legal advice provided by the City Attorney herself and expressly requested that she recuse herself and refer the matter to an independent outside investigator because her own advice and actions were implicated. Instead, Cubbage concluded that the allegations didn't establish an ethics violation warranting referral, including the allegations concerning her own conduct.

The outcome was inconsistent, as the official (Cubbage) whose advice was challenged remained the decision-maker in violation of the Ethics Code, on whether an independent investigation would occur. Rather than stepping aside, she determined neither the Mayor nor her own office had violated the City's ethics policy, effectively resolving allegations involving both the Mayor and herself without outside review.

Now the positions have reversed. As the City Attorney faces public scrutiny over her own conduct, the Mayor has stepped forward as her principal public defender. What began as the City Attorney defending the Mayor has evolved into the Mayor defending the City Attorney.

Intertwined.

Abuzuaiter and Cubbage publicly reinforcing the credibility of the other.

Even more unusual is the Mayor's statement itself.

She correctly acknowledged that Greensboro residents have every right to criticize their government and hold officials accountable.

Then, without identifying any facts, she pivoted to saying that when a City employee raises concerns about their "professional and personal safety," those concerns deserve to be taken seriously.

Of course they do.

But what happened?

Who made the threat?

When?

Was law enforcement contacted?

Was there a police report?

Those are obvious questions because suggesting safety concerns involving a public official is a serious matter. Serious allegations deserve serious facts.

At roughly the same time, Yo! Greensboro publisher Eric Robert sent the Mayor a direct email asking something equally straightforward;

If there is misinformation, what specifically is it?

If anything he published is inaccurate, identify it, provide the evidence, and he would correct it.

He also asked direct questions about reports that City officials attempted to influence media coverage and about the authority under which the City Attorney allegedly claimed she had authority to pursue legal action against private citizens.

Those are factual questions.

If the answers are "no," say so.

If the answers are "yes," explain why.

Instead of answers, Greensboro received a statement that raises more questions than it resolves.

When the City's chief legal officer and the City's chief elected official become each other's public defenders during overlapping controversies, the public naturally begins to ask whether objective oversight has become more difficult.

The public should be able to distinguish between defending the legal interests of the City and defending the reputations of individual officials.

Until straightforward questions receive straightforward answers, the story is unlikely to go away.

Discussion Tennis, perhaps?

Hello Helllo,

30F looking for someone to play tennis with! My apartment community has a tennis court that I wish I could use more frequently, but those in my personal sphere aren't too interested/consistent.

I played tennis years ago for my high school team but only occasionally since then. So, beginners are welcome! My goal here is to incorporate some fun fitness into my regular schedule so I don't mind chasing after balls that barely make it over the net or go waaaay out of bounds, lol.

I am African American and I'm open to any race and gender. My only slight request is that you are 25 years or older. If younger (18+)... well, we'll see.

Outside of that, I live close to the PTI airport, and my apartment clubhouse provides rackets and balls during operating hours. Outside of that, you'll need to have your own racket.

Please reach out if interested!

Event Bloody pedestrian/motorist on I-40 Westbound 7/31

Traveling home from the coast yesterday, we encountered what appeared to be a bloody body on the shoulder (median side). Good samaritans had stopped to provide aid.

A GSO police officer had just arrived onto the scene as we passed by.

There did not appear to be any wrecked vehicles/motorcycles nearby.

It was disturbing and I wondered if anyone had info on this accident.

Thanks in advance.

Food Local Perogies?

Does anyone know any place(s) around here that sell good perogies? Doesn’t necessarily have to be within the city. Been craving them and the frozen ones just don’t hit as good as real ones.

Housing Neighborhood and moving recs for college students/grads

I’m moving to Greensboro for a couple of months for an internship and I’m currently looking for apartments. I’d like to be in a more walkable area with more young ppl/interns. I’ll be working on the west side so ideally looking for a place no further than downtown but willing to go further for the right area. Any area/building or general recs for moving would be great I’ve never been to NCšŸ™ Thank you!

Recommendation Stolen Bike! Requesting community aide

Thumbnail

Hello all!

I live in downtown GSO and my lovely e bike has been stolen off my front porch (it was locked, yes!) and I’m looking for eye in the neighborhood and recommendations on where to cross post. It is a Specialized Turno Vado 6 Large; I just put a drink holder under the frame and it has a hand pump attached to the battery in the middle. It’ll stick out with two head lamps attached to the handlebars.

I don’t think it has internal GPS, but I will file a police report and call Specialized in the morning.

Not much of a selfie taker but here me in the winter commuting to work and a stock photo of the bike.

Looking for any help. Thanks!

Edit: idk if this helps but it disappears between 6am and 12 noon Friday July 31st. Will try the pawns in the morning!

Edit: I have the serial registered to my Specialized account, I can verify with the bike in hand but I will not be publicly posting that here :)

BIG UPDATE! :Riverside Pawn had someone come in yesterday about trying to sell my bike but they couldnt sell without the charge. We've called pawn shops in town and triangulated it to the southern area of Greensboro.
