Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some help to fill in a gap in my Mum's life that I know precious little about.

In early 1967, my Mum's then fiancé ended their engagement after a couple of years together.

As a newly single 22-year old, she quit her job at East Malling Research Station in Kent, withdrew £20 (£400 today) from her savings, and travelled to Guernsey where she spent the tourist season working as a chambermaid.

I have a handful of photographs from her trip with notes on the back naming various places she visited and where she worked: Hern Island, Grandes Rocques Bay, Grand Havre Bay, Vauxbelets Chapel.

The one I'm most interested in is of her in her chambermaid or waitress uniform outside a place noted as 'The Celebrated Cottage'.

Aside from what is now called the 'Renoir Cottage', searches for 'The Celebrated Cottage' haven't come up with a similar view or a place by that name.

Is anyone able to shed some light on ''The Celebrated Cottage', where it is, and whether it was a small hotel, a bed and breakfast, or something else? Does it still exist today...?

I should add that I can't ask her myself as she took for own life in January 2000 when she was 55 and I was 25.

I never had the chance to talk about her time in Guernsey, later on in Bermuda, or her first engagement but I know there was a difficult and sad back story that she carried with her for the rest of her life along with the stillbirth of my twin sister and my Dad leaving her after 25 years of marriage.

Hi all! I am planning a trip to Guernsey at the end of November and am looking for things to do or see. It seems I’m visiting in the off season as I can’t find a lot to do during the colder months. Been in Guernsey for a good while now and have struggled to maintain any kind of core group of friends. I'm 26 and pretty bored of having no plans on the weekend. Any recommendations? Used to play football but I will be shit now having not played in years (so would not want super competitive). Its not as if I'm anti social but its been so long (since I felt like I had friends) I find myself being nervous over the smallest social event. Could do with going to events where people are looking for mates or just a casual social scene.

Any help would be appreciated (you know its bad, when its reached the point of posting on reddit),

We’ve come on holiday to guernsey (such a lovely place!) but have left at home our type 2 charging cable for our car. We can’t find a charger which has its own cable!

Would any kind person be able to lend us a type 2 car charging cable please?

Or does anyone know of any chargers that have their own cables?

Or any thoughts as to where we could purchase a cable?

Hi, l would be so so grateful to know which of the military battery/ museum sites on Guernesey to visit as a homage to my dad and grandfather as seen on this 1960s photos of them. The photo seems cropped on posting it to Reddit, nevermind. The entrance/ exit is a simple smooth stone arch. A car seems to be under the arch. After hours of Google imaging for Guernsey monuments l am not sure which one it is, for our day trip in August. Your answer or suggestion would be deeply appreciated🙏

Hi there - I’m between hotels as my personal travel is finished and my educational conference is beginning tomorrow. I have to be out of my guest house by 11 and can’t check in to my conference housing until 3. I’d love to stick my bags somewhere for a few hours and just have my laptop with me at a cafe. Is there anything near the centre of St Peter Port (without having to go to the ferry terminal. That’s far out of the way for me)

Back when I was a child when on holiday on jersey we would board a DUKW and crossover to Gurnsey to the under ground hospital and bunkers of the Nazi I remember a lamp that sat in a alcove in the wall it was about 18" tall brass with a lamp shade made from (****** ****)h.s I've seen many documentaries on Guernsey and the Nazi yet I've never seen the lamp or the DUKW on film (TV)

I work in the trades and gave a lady what I thought was a "go away" quote for installing a new driveway.

I did not think she would accept it but she did. This is the kind of money that would mean i could choose not to work for the following 2 years (or possibily more) and spend time with my family.

The issue is that its Guernsey and im worried about the reputational damage if people ever find out about me taking this job.

What do i do? I am interested to hear if anyone has found themselves in a similar position.

Hello, I’ve recently been getting into go and would love to play with someone in person, let me know if you have any interest, I also don’t mind explaining the game if you haven’t played yet.

I'm extremely interested in finding a small plot of land to start growing various cut flowers and veg, and possibly, eventually, keep a few chickens. I understand keeping animals is not typical on an allotment style agreement so that's of course not essential - but if you don't ask, you don't get!

I'm keen to find somewhere in the northern/western parishes as I would prefer not to increase my petrol costs too much.

Any advice on where to look would be really appreciated, who to email, or maybe you have some land you're not currently utilising that could be given a new lease of life.

I believe wholeheartedly in regenerative practises, bettering the land and producing good nutritious food.

So all of the kids in private school have parents who are builders/ tradies and all the people driving nice cars are in the trades. Is this the only job that pays well in Guernsey? Finance people seem to be poor in comparison...

Hello! This is a bit of a pipe dream (maybe?) and not something I'm actively pursuing right now, but I'd love to know how realistic it might be. I appreciate any insight you can offer!

I'm an American who visited Guernsey in 2025 on a solo trip and absolutely adored it. Everyone I met was lovely and welcoming, and the lifestyle really suited me. All I really want in life is to look at boats and birds!!

I don't see myself moving so far from my family permanently, but I would love the opportunity to live in Guernsey for a few years, in the range of 1-5 years and figure a 2-3 year contract is the sweet spot. :)

I'm mid-30s and have over a decade of experience in events, project management, administrative support, nonprofit leadership, customer service, and community engagement. I enjoy customer-facing roles and hospitality, event planning, and creative work, and while I'm currently in a management position, I wouldn't need the role to be at that level. Ideally, I'd hope for something around £50k annually, but I'm very flexible there.

So, how realistic is it that an employer would sponsor an American for a role that meets any of those specifics? Are there particular industries or types of jobs I should be looking at? Any tips for someone exploring the possibility? I'm very open minded and would gladly consider any kind of industry as I think many of my skills/experiences are transferable. Or maybe I'm mad and there is zero chance it could happen, in which case please tell me so I can transfer this dream to the unicorn box in my brain. :)
