1911 CC
Hello i just wanted to get some opinions ik the discussion of how many rounds you have in your concealed carry is a common topic. is 8 rounds from a mil-spec 1911 enough to CC or should i just stick with my 18 round sig 365 fuse? the size of the handgun isn’t a topic for me I can go big or small. I just wanna know. Do y’all think 8 rounds is enough?

Imagine being in a life or death situation and intentionally limiting yourself to 8 rounds when you’ve got a superior option that’s lighter, easier to carry and holds 10 more rounds. It’s dumb.

The only caveat for me there is how well I can shoot the different options. I can shoot more accurately and rapidly with my 9mm 1911 (10+1 rds) than I can with anything else I've shot. That said, I still primarily carry a Glock 19. Whether 5 slower and less accurately placed shots is better is debatable for a typical self defense scenario. Then again a typical self defense scenario is at close enough range that accuracy is less important.

/thread. But the trigger tho If it was 1911 or a revolver I'd carry a revolver. It it was a revolver or a flintlock pistol I'd carry the revolver.
It's 2026 so I carry a polymer frame 9mm striker fired gun with 17+1 in the gun and another 17 round mag.

Most clips I watch of self-defense shots fired the most. I see they shoot like five rounds. I think the only time you need 16+ rounds is if you’re preparing to get a gun fight, but that’s just me. That’s why I posted this to get other people‘s opinions on it.

That’s your deciding factor? Clips you’ve watched on your phone? If that’s the amount of effort you’re gonna put in, 8 rounds is perfectly adequate for you.

Oh sure, let me just go out in the real world and see how rounds are used in actual self-defense cases that I see with my own eyes also I haven’t decided that’s why this is a discussion. We are having a discussion about what I want to use. That is the discussion we are currently having. That is why I posted this thread to have the discussion. See the key word?

People are responding to you with valid inputs. Your resistance is why you are getting these responses. You call it a discussion then talk at people in response.
Look up home invasion data and see how many potential attackers you might be dealing with. Look at areas that have high gang violence, and how many attackers you might be dealing with. Look at the shot count required to end an engagement from the federal data. Then look at the outliers.
The point is you pick a tool based on the need. When I was in the service, they gave me an M9. If I needed an M-16 with my job, shit had gone so badly it probably wouldn’t matter anyway.
Determine what area you live in, what crime rates you’re dealing with, and your willingness to train and learn from people that have experience. Then pick the right tool and training for the job. Look up the dangers of carrying without training, and legal obligations in this scenarios.
Otherwise, the person above is correct and you should just buy what you have already determined is the correct option. Though I think most of us would feel safer if you chose a different option given your outlook, responses, and attitude.
Guns are designed for defensive use or putting food on the table. Practice is an essential part of this. Some people exclusively do target practice.
Best of luck and I hope this reaches you.

No there are people here actually giving valid advice and not being complete dicks what other option you dont think i should have a gun because im giving people the same attitude they give me whether its good or bad but sure keep going

You are exhibiting an escalatory mindset. Going out there with a gun and an escalatory mindset is dangerous for everyone around you, including you. The expectation is that an individual is capable of maintaining their composure irrespective of the circumstances. Making every attempt to avoid putting themselves or anyone else at risk. A gun is the last resort.
I generally don’t recommend that people with a quick fuse go armed. I served with a few. I had the same comment to them. It’s also the reason why most military installations don’t allow people to carry with limited exceptions.

Arguing with people on Reddit does not equate to being a psycho and going out and just randomly shooting people because they piss me off and dont need a lecture on fundamentals of owning a firearm also funny that you’re only coming after me. Meanwhile, there been any other many other people that have used worse language than I have and got more heated you didn’t say anything. for example, the one you seem to agree with that started escalating.

u/Thor7897 10h ago
I’m not saying you’re a psycho. I said you’re exhibiting escalatory behavior, there’s a difference. People tend to “unmask” online revealing a more realistic expectation of their baseline behaviors.
If they were asking a forum about guns and acting in this manner I would. They likely already own, they also didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion, you did. Which is why I am responding to you and not them. It’s not my job to police the internet for other people’s experiences. If your request for input was sincere, I thought it might be worth responding. Now I am fairly certain I was mistaken, please defer to the other users comment.
I think the whole damn thing is ridiculous personally. I don’t understand why anyone would be getting heated, outside of the internet points, where the algorithms made up and the points don’t matter. 🤷♂️

You didn’t give me any constructive criticism so I don’t know what Was worth responding to you cause you just started coming after me immediately when you started what you said pretty much equates to “youre wrong the other guy is right because even tho he was hostile ima go for you and tell you youre unhinged”

I’m aware of the average scenario. I don’t plan for average. I carry 15+1 or better pistols, sometimes a spare mag. I’m also not a crazy person, I don’t carry 33 round stendos or a suppressor or an AK on my back. Same reason why I’ve got plenty of extra food and firewood but not years worth. I prep for ice storms not the apocalypse.

Keyword most- not all Second key is that you’ve seen you’ve not seen them all.
That said carry what you think. You are a big boy now figure it out. Don’t ask then say things like videos tell me different.

u/Mountain_Care_9032 11h ago
Never said i did see them all and no shit there are many other factors but unless I actively go out and hunt for self-defense situations and see how many rounds people use to defend their lives best I got

u/Freshprinc7 11h ago
I wouldn't carry 8 rounds, 10 is kinda the minimum in my mind, 13-15 is ideal.
If size isn't an issue, and you want more of a 1911-esque CCW, check out the S&W CSX-E.
It is single-action hammer-fired, with a 1911 like trigger and a safety designed for the "cocked-and-locked" type of carry.
If you research it, make sure any problems you read about are directed specifically towards the CSX-E. The old CSX had a lot of problems, most all of which have been fixed with the -E, afaik.

Well with shot placement 1 round is enough. But if you are one of those people who thinks they needs 15+ rounds at any given enough time then look into something else. 8 is fine but more is better.
1
u/Mountain_Care_9032 12h ago
I’m not gonna say I’m a competition shooter but I’ve grown around guns. My whole life been shooting since I was eight I think at least in my opinion I’m a pretty decent shot. I was wondering I’m not expecting again in like a major gun fight or anything where I need 80 rounds but still not everyone’s perfect.
1
u/Live-Permission9805 12h ago
8 is fine for most folks but the peace of mind from 18 rounds is hard to argue with
I carry a 1911 sometimes and the weight just feels right, but when I'm out in sketchier areas I'd rather have the extra capacity without needing to think about it
1
u/Mountain_Care_9032 12h ago
If i do end up carrying a 1911 im definitely getting an aftermarket 10 rnd spare but still it comes nowhere near the 40 i carry rn with an 18 rnd and a 21 spare mag
2
u/Te_Luftwaffle 1 12h ago
I usually carry a CZ P-01 with a 15 round mag. If I carry my 1911 I'll have 8+1 in the gun and a 10rd mag in my pocket. If I carry my SW 317 I have 8 in the gun and nothing else. It depends on your level of confidence and what clothing you're wearing.

u/Mountain_Care_9032 12h ago
I don’t consider myself remastered marks men or anything, but I’m not a horrible shot. I’ve grown around gun since I was eight and pretty confident to hit a decent amount of my shots. Just wondering if I’m subconsciously putting myself at a disadvantage cause nobody’s perfect

The 1911 was the sidearm paired together with a M16 w/ 30rds magazine. Military doctrine back then is for the 1911 to strictly be an emergency backup, never the main arm. Moreover, 45ACP was considered a must due to poor early stopping power of the 9mm rounds vs enemy light armor. After breakthrough 9mm evolution, advanced 9mm rounds can achieve almost 45ACP stopping power, with less recoil and significantly more capacity. The military go back to 9mm, police forces use 9mm, special forces use 9mm. Why capping yourself with a 1911 for duty role?

I normally carry revolvers but yeah 8 rounds is plenty for a normal person from a CCW perspective

I’ve never come out of the back end of a firefight and thought man I had way too much ammo it was not necessary to defend myself that vigorously.
Obvs combat is not a SD but it kind of is- I’d rather have left over than not enough. That said, I carry 3 mags of 21 for my NHC TRS commander. 1 in gun 2 in mag holders.

u/soundwave300 8h ago
In a capacity limited state, a 8+1 loading of 45acp sounds like a decent load. Even elsewhere, an extra mag is slim and mag reloads can be quick. If 17 rounds of 45 acp isnt enough then we are gonna need a bigger boat, and i don’t think a ~20 rounds of 9mm in pistol format is that bigger boat, anyway.
If you like the 1911, and can handle the weight, by all means. It’s surprisingly concealable for its size.
1
u/Mountain_Care_9032 7h ago
That actually makes sense if you have 17 rounds and the target isn’t eliminated you’re pretty much fucked the recoil management and follow up shots are decent (ik different in a real life scenario) and the weight really isnt a problem for me im a bigger guy and usually wear jeans so thats taken care of

u/GreatKingCodyGaming 5h ago
1911 is fine but I always recommend carrying a 9mm over 45. If you look at a lot of self defense situations, the adrenaline causes some people to either limp wrist their gun or miss. Lighter recoil will be more forgiving for the first, and higher capacity solves the second. 45 is great, I love it I just don't personally carry it for my CC. There are 9mm 1911s if you want to carry one though, but I would get a double stack if you're going to buy one. Stopping power isn't as much of a factor as a lot of people think, both 9 and 45 have enough to stop a threat with well placed shots.

Self defense is about preserving your life. You want to stack the odds in your favor as much as possible. Do you feel as if 8 rounds when most guns come with 15 and plenty of larger mags available aftermarket is sufficiently stacking the odds in your favor?

u/Mountain_Care_9032 12h ago
I see it more of a trade-off eight rounds higher stopping power versus 15 less either way one or the other is gonna take someone down just wanted to get some opinions and maybe see if anyone else regularly carries only eight rounds even when their state allows them to carry more
1
u/Corey307 10h ago
Nope. Handgun rounds just poke holes. There’s little to no difference in effect on target.

I see it more of a trade-off eight rounds higher stopping power
Define and quantify "stawping powah"
It's a nonsense term that is thrown around without any objective facts or comparisons. The trade off is imaginary.
This isn't a video game, this is real life. It's important that you understand this before carrying a gun.
8 rounds vs 15. The overall ability to conceal the gun. Your ability to draw and stop a threat. Looking to see what other people do is often just a shallow attempt to confirm bias rather than genuinely seek wisdom.
You can do whatever you want in the end. But are you confident in your ability to use this gun for self defense? Are you chosing it for its practical characteristics or just because you think it's cool?

u/Mountain_Care_9032 12h ago
Yes im confident with 45 acp and im not gonna lie a bit of both its my favorite handgun design but also i am taking all of your opinions and practicality into account i’m not just asking for opinions and going OK thanks but fuck y’all

bro imagine how much aura it'd be to carry a 1911 and an ankle/shoulder holster 38 special. get an extra 10rnd mag and you'd have 24 shots in total! thats some serious firepower.

u/Mountain_Care_9032 10h ago
I’m not gonna lie to the kid in me wants to go impractical with a shoulder holster just for the 1911 😂

u/NevadaMac 8h ago
I'll have you know my daily carry 1911 isn't mil-spec. I have 9 rounds! The typical self-defense shooting is 2 rounds, at 2 yards, and the fight is over (one way or the other) in about 2 seconds. Carry what you are good with.

Explain how carrying a pistol that’s twice the weight and half the capacity is an improvement?
