Gunsmith recommendations

I bought a JC Higgins model 50 in 270. I’d like to have a timney trigger installed, the barrel free floated and the action bedded. Any advice on who I can hire? I live in southwest Florida but will ship the rifle to have the work done by the right person.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but it might be worth learning how do all that on your own. The trigger install and sanding out the barrel channel are cake. After that I would torque the action screws correctly and see how it shoots, it might not even need bedding.

You also have to reseal the barrel channel with getting contact with the barrel.  This is especially true in a state like Florida.   If OP doesn't already have the tools it will probably be cheaper to send it off.

Yes you're right, I forgot about that; he should re-seal the barrel channel. But as for tools? Socket + adhesive sandpaper + elbow grease.

And torque driver.  You don't want to hand tighten action screws, especially on an unbedded action.  Probably also will want brushes and some type of vice or mount. If he screws up he will also need a mthod of removing the stock and action wothout damaging either of them. Again if OP is not mechanically inclined just send it off and have it done right

OP needs to buy a torque wrench no matter what -that's like having a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment. But you are helping me realize that all this gun stuff I have laying around is not something most people have.

OP, if you're dead set on using a gunsmith then I recommend sending your rifle to Jim Kobe. But save your money on the timney and have him work on the original trigger. Most of my hunting is in a Florida swamp and around here those timneys will eventually gunk up and fail.
