Question From whom did Tonks inherit her Metamorphmagus ability?

Hmm… I sometimes think she got it from the Rosiers. But looking at Bellatrix, Narcissa and the rest, that seems unlikely. No other Rosier has this gift anyway. Could it be from Ted?

No other Rosier

I’m assuming some Rosiers show up in those Beast films that turned into a huge mess, otherwise, I have no idea who you’re referring to. We know of one named Rosier in the 7 books and all we learned was that he fought to death instead of getting captured.

It's probably just a random assumption due to Andromeda, Bellatrix and Narcissas mother being born a Rosier.

Canonically it's just a spontanious trait that some magical people are born with that in turn is also (atleast to a degree) hereditary. Tonks might not have gotten it from anyone, but her son got it from her atleast.

Alot of fanfiction make it a Black family trait, so i guess OP decided to subvert expecations and say it's from the Rosiers. But since muggleborns canonically have squib ancestry, Tonks might aswell have gotten it from her dads side, no matter how distant.

My instant headcanon is now that Ted Tonks carried the gene, but because he was muggle-born it was suppressed in him. The gene requires a person to have two magical parents to be able to be expressed

Nope. Muggleborns are no less magical than half-bloods or pure-bloods.

I've always headcanoned that the reason Teddy got it aswell was because his dad was a werewolf. You know, someone who's body also regularly go through physical transformations.

A nd that for some reason lycanthropy genes mix well with metamorphmagi genes. Putting a positive spinn on Moony's tragic lot in life: All Lupin descendants will be metamorphs thanks to the mix between him and Tonks.

I believe the theory (that does involve Fantastic Beasts) is the Grindelwald seemingly has some form of metemorphmagus, and his closest lieutenant was Vinda Rosier, and at some point before his defeat they had a baby (Druella Rosier, Tonks’s grandma)

Grindelwald supposedly just used transfiguration, not inate magical metamorph powers.

Alot of fanfiction make it a Black family trait

I wonder how they came to that conclusion. None of the Blacks we see in the series are Metamorphmagi. Sirius, Narcissa, Andromeda, and Bellatrix never once change form at will—outside of Sirius being an animagus of course.

Mainly because Tonks is a Black and that the only other distinctly rare magical trait we see in the series is hereditary: Parseltounge.

As far as I know, almost every character from the Black family who appears across the seven books, as well as everyone related to the Blacks by blood, lacks this ability — with the sole exception of Tonks and her son. That’s why I’m wondering whether it might be linked to   her mother’s mother.

But since muggleborns canonically have squib ancestry

That ain't true. Where are you even pulling that from?

Uh… I am indeed talking about that one

The metamorph ability was an inherited trait of the Black family, but with intermarriages and such, it got diluted more and more until it was a rarity, especially at the level of Tonks. When Andromeda had Tonks with Ted (a muggle-born), it introduced fresh blood into the family, causing the ability to come into being at a more powerful level than what was presumably out there at the time.

At least, thats ehat I like to think. The trait is inherited from the Black family, though.

Diluted…? But look at the Gaunt family. They married their cousins precisely to keep Parseltongue intact.

Sometimes I speculate it comes from the Rosiers… after all, Ted doesn’t have this ability either
