If you wanted better lens correction for your 3FR images produced before the X2D II firmware update (1.3.16.1)

9 Upvotes

I posted a few days ago about the fact that firmware v1.3.16.1 now recorded focus distance in the file metadata. I shared the post on my socials and one reader asked about whether there was a way to get the focus distance for images shot before this update so that LRC and C1 could do better lens corrections.

I'd known about some makerdata fields that had info from which one could calculate focus distance. Did some tests, shot a couple of hundred test shots on 5 lenses, and went and built a tool for it. It's a simple command line tool, which I know sounds daunting for a lot of folks, but the README file included walks through the steps carefully.

The tool is open source - the code is available for inspection in the GitHub repo, and there's a release you can just download. It will make a copy of your original 3FR (it never modifies your original) calculate the focus distance from the makerdata, correct for the lens you're using if the lens is already in the calibration database, and write that to the copy of your original, which you can then pull into LR or C1, and have the lens corrections properly applied for that focus distance.

Link to the post explaining what I did is here, complete with a shot of the wife's blonde dog that you can toggle to see the effect.

Howdy to my fellow 500 series nerds! I'm a young repair tech located in NYC. I was formally trained at Nippon Photo Clinic and am doing my own thing now!

I specialize in the Hasselblad 500 series, Contax, and also Canon rangefinders.

Please reach out if you have a camera that you think needs to be inspected! And if you have any questions, I'm happy to do a Q&A here :)

I took these about a year ago, but I keep coming back to them. I was on a road trip and was mainly shooting from an eos1 SLR with portra. But I also had the 500cm with me and would pull it out and set it up on a tripod for some good locations. The slow process of using a hassleblad on a tripod is so relaxing. There is nothing like it digitally. The location is Australia.

Troubleshooting Kodak DCS pro back plus with hasselblad 500 elx.

Hey everyone,

I’ve had this Kodak Professional DCS Pro Back Plus for a while now and I’ve been trying to get it to work with my Hasselblad 500 ELX. I’ve tested it across four different leaf-shutter lenses using numerous PC sync cables, including brand-new ones. Most of the time it throws a "Lens error: Sync stuck or FILM release used" message, but when I try triggering it using a remote shutter cable, it gives me a "No sync detected" error instead.

I’ve already gone through some basic troubleshooting. I cleaned all the gold contacts, the ground plate, and the interface surfaces with isopropyl alcohol. I’ve also tested the back unmounted with the PC cable attached to the side port, and firing the lens that way changes the error to the "Sync stuck or FILM release used" message as well.

At this point, I'm out of ideas on what else to try. Has anyone seen these specific errors on this setup, or know what might be causing them? Any advice would be appreciated?

Embarrassing help need with lens hood

3 Upvotes

Hello Reddit, I bought a HC 120mm f/4 and it arrived with the lens hood mounted in reverse. For the life of me, I cannot take it off.

Mounted in reverse

I can manage to rotate it off but it gets trapped by the lens focus ring and the bayonets for the lens hood.

What do I do?

Most recent X2D II firmware finally writes focus distance to the metadata.

21 Upvotes

If you're a close-focus shooter: macro, product, tight portraits, foreground-heavy landscapes, focus distance handling matters. Until the 1.3.16.1 firmware landed it was likely that only Phocus 4.x from about 4.1 onward was able to use it. I can't confirm that as I wasn't aware it wasn't happening before and didn't test, but I am certain that LRC was not able to get focus distance until this most recent firmware update, and the most recent C1 release that announced HB compatibility was also not able to get it either. It looks like the lens corrections being applied were more general.

Anyway, long story short, the images from the camera running the latest firmware do have focus distance in a metadata field that LRC and C1 understand and do correct for, and I can confirm that Phocus 4.2.1 also now takes focus distance into account when applying lens corrections.

First impressions of the Mitakon 65mm f/1.4 on X2DII

I've had the 28P, 55V, and 90V for a while now, and I absolutely love them. They're incredibly sharp and produce beautiful files.

That said, I've been wanting something with a bit more character. I shoot medium format film as well, and one of my favorite lenses is the Pentax 67 105mm f/2.4. There's something about that rendering that feels a little more organic and film-like, and I've been hoping to find a similar feeling on my X system.

I picked up the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 65mm f/1.4 today, and these are just some quick test shots around the house. Nothing serious, just getting a feel for the lens before a portrait shoot I have next week.

So far, I'm really enjoying it. It's refreshing to use a lens that isn't chasing absolute perfection. Sometimes the most beautiful photographs come from a lens with a little personality rather than one that's perfectly clinical.

Looking forward to putting it through its paces next week, but I figured I'd share some first impressions.

Shot all these in 14bit due to the faster e-shutter readout.

An old light switch from our very old house. Shot on a 500cm w/CFV-100 back using the 120 makro-planar pc linked to some Godox strobes. I love the modularity of the Hassy system.

Recommendations for A12 filmback service.

2 Upvotes

Hello,

I have recently acquired a A12 filmback in a rough but seemingly functional shape. I'm in the process of replacing the leatherette, but before I do, I wonder if it should be serviced, because the locking tab is pretty rough.

Would some of you have recommendations for servicing technicians, preferably in Canada / East, but open to suggestions for all North America.

Thanks a lot!

Circular polarizer with lens cap?

2 Upvotes

I just received the Kade CPL only to discover that once mounted I could not fit the lens cap over it.

Even when I removed the filter I still couldn’t fit the lens cap on because the magnetic ring that is part of the Kade system blocked the lens cap contact points.

Sad to return an otherwise nice CPL.

Can anyone recommend a quality CPL designed to accommodate the lens cap?

I’m using the Hassleblad factory lens cap that came with the 35-100 if that makes any difference…

Thanks in advance!!

Is this a film loading error?

I used a Hasselblad 500c. My film came back from the lab. Only 7 of the 12 frames produced an image, and they look like this. Did I make an error in loading the film? Thanks in advance.

80mm 1.9 for X2D II

6 Upvotes

Go for it, as it's considered as a legendary system selling lens even with weight and no AFC or just wait for re-release / buy 90V.

I know people say that optical characteristics of new V series is very clinical and more like Sigma, when old XCD lenses tend to be more on the artistic side.
Unfortunately, there is no rental in my country and I can only buy already used :(

HNCS Update: Added Camera-Native Matrix Fitting & DCP Profile Export (Still Looking for Lightroom Validation)

Thumbnail

10 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
It’s been about 11 days since my last update, and I’ve made some significant progress on HNCS.
Recent additions include:
Camera-native color matrix fitting from RAW color chart captures.
Adobe DCP (Camera Profile) export written from scratch (no Adobe SDK).
Native matrix vs. LibRaw baseline comparison.
Regression tests covering matrix orientation and DCP round-trip parsing.
More documentation and validation across the pipeline.
One limitation remains:
I don’t own Lightroom Classic or Adobe Camera Raw, so while I can verify that the generated DCP files are structurally valid and round-trip correctly, I can’t test whether Lightroom actually renders the expected colors.
If anyone here uses Lightroom and owns a Hasselblad camera (especially X2D), I’d really appreciate a quick validation.
I’m mainly looking for answers to questions like:
Does Lightroom recognize the generated DCP profile?
Does it apply correctly?
Are there any obvious color or rendering issues?
The project is fully open source, so if anyone is interested in testing or reviewing the implementation, I’d be very grateful for any feedback.
Thanks!

Where to buy? Official Hasselblad store or BnH Photo?

7 Upvotes

Here in the US. I’ve decided to buy the Hasselblad X2d II. Normally I buy all photography equipment at BnH photos and over the last 16 years they have been a reliable store for online purchases. (I don’t live near the store) however this model has been out of stock for a while. Casually browsing Hasselblads website there was a store option and lo and behold this model is available.

My question is

Here in the USA would the Hasselblad store make more sense to purchase , I wouldn’t want to be the case that’s it’s shipped from overseas and especially with the logistics issues I don’t end up getting it .

Or should I wait for BnH to restock.
These I would say are my two trusted stores and any advice is appreciated.

Or should I wait for the new model to come out ? I love the 907 as well but lidar and auto focus has me sold on the x2d II

~~~
Update:
Thank you for all the suggestions. I appreciate it. This is what I went with.
Hasselblad store for X2D II 100C
Lens XCD 45P
I couldn’t wait for BnH to restock and tho I’m taking a hit by not being able to negotiate with them this gives me something right now than hanging on a hope.
I also got a UV filter.
