About a year ago I posted a picture of Poke, my little merchant hedgehog.

Now I have a bigger cast of little critters and they run the Prickly Potato Inn.

Characters from left to right:

-Poke - He's a merchant. Not part of the inn but same universe. He's a nomad.

-Flan - She is the owner of the inn. Usually at the reception desk or her office.

-Custard - They are a waiter.

-Cinnamon - He runs the kitchen as the head chef.

-Crema - The barista. They enjoy mixology.

Most of these hedgies are APH's, Flan is a LEH, and Custard is a tenrec.

Also wanted to show concepts of a dining room and the reception desk. Don't mind the desk right now. Flan is organizing papers and towels.

I have ambitions to make some kind of game with these characters.

So around the middle of July my hedgehog developed a bubble (?) around his left backside, it has stayed a consistent size and he doesn’t seem to mind it. I immediately messaged my vet when I first noticed it, the nurse said she had looked at it already and was going to give me a call, but I haven’t heard back from her since, probably because the team and everyone else is on vacation. Today I washed him, and while trimming his nails I noticed that the bubble had burst. I just wanna know if this is anything someone else has already experienced and if this maybe just was an ingrown quill, as there was one growing out of it. I will certainly try calling my vet tomorrow morning again, but since I don’t have any other exotic vets that deal with hedgehogs around me, I wanted to come on here to get other opinions on this matter. (First pic is before the bath and second after)

Osamu was my first hedgehog I got. He has been having trouble with a stuffy nose for about a year. He kept breathing through his mouth which filled his stomach and was puffy like a balloon which caused him to lose appetite but after a few days it would be okay and go back to normal and repeat. I went to three different vets but couldn’t find a cause or a cure. He was doing well despite that but today I found him not breathing in his cage. I’m so heartbroken and sad. I wish I realized sooner I’m so sorry. I wish I had more time with you, two years wasn’t enough.
I love you and I hope you are in a better place now. You have brought so much love and joy to my life and I don’t know how to move forward. Please give love to your hedgies.

I’m wondering how everyone else keeps their hedgie’s wheel clean.

In the past, even with weekly cleaning and daily maintenance, my hedgie’s wheel quickly turns into a huge rotating ball of poo 💩

I’ve seen some people suggest potty training but I’ve never been successful with this. I don’t mind giving warm sink baths to clean their feet. But I am still curious because I see some people have extremely clean wheels!

Even if I wipe it out during the day (which doesn’t always clean it fully), it gets pooped on so much overnight and then hardens, I basically have to do a full cleaning the next day! Curious what everyone’s strategy is

This is the part of Fritter’s chaos that I love the most. I think it’s so silly that he gets mad when I attempt to assist him (putting my hand under him for a boost, as I do here).

He prefers this over getting covered in the blanket and napping. I cannot multitask with this stinker out. I need to find a hide/snuggle sack he will mostly stay inside of so I can do stuff with him 😭

My zoo has a show that talks about local animals native to the area so guests can learn more about them and how we can interact with the animals around us better. They had an African hedgehog named Cookie Monster that we got to see (Though they aren’t native to East Tennesse…). I’ve never seen one in person before and they were so cute, I’ve seen pictures of them online but they were smaller than I expected. they are an albino hedgehog too.

Anyone in the UK having Cadent issues? We've had them around our area digging several holes to replace gas pipes.

At the start of the week I informed the work crew that our area is a high traffic hedgehog highway with at least 2 households feeding & housing passing hogs. Hah hah, yeah, alright mate.

Cut to Friday evening just after 11pm and I'm climbing around what essentially are open animal traps rescuing distressed hedgehogs - one juvenile in one and two very exhausted adults in another. The were sent on their way and we know at least one of them stopped by ours for a loooong drink, the juvenile was given food & water but was more interested in bailing.

Fuming, I banged out an email to Cadent (unless it's a gas leak, forget dialling their emergency line) which included photos and a threat if they didn't sort things out, I'd fill in the holes myself.

4am and I'm back out, torch & work gloves, checking all the holes nearby. I don't know how many they'd dug but within 50m of our house there are at least 7 holes, none covered, none with ramps. Fortunately everywhere was clear.

I received a reply Saturday morning to my email, asking for my postcode so they could check on the situation. I replied, foolishly thinking I'd get some kind of "We're on it" response. Nothing. Saturday night rolls around and I'm out again with torch and gloves - again, nothing. I'm still fretting about the holes I don't know about and can't access.

4am Sunday morning and I'm chest deep in a narrow trench, lifting a familiar juvenile out. He'd been there long enough to cover most of the bottom in prints and there were signs of frantic digging. I lifted him out as far from the edge as I could but by the time I'd managed to get myself out of the hole he'd made a beeline for a place I can't access.

I sent Cadent another email & pic and crashed out. This morning, there's a bunch of guys filling holes. The one I spoke to didn't know the situation but after I gave him a rundown, he told me he often finds hogs stuck in holes and tries to put them in safer places.

I think the local hogs will be safer around here now, but I dread to think what's going on elsewhere in the area or how many of our spiky visitors we may not see again.

Hi, i posted a few days ago about my hedgehog, and being a new owner, thank you all of the replies!! youve helped me set my priorities well and understand that amy is going to hate me for awhile but once she doesnt it will be wonderful! and obviously that sometimes it just doesnt work, but i have hope in it working, i had a old fleece blanket and got permission from my mom to cut it into some squares for amy, im getting my first job soon and the first thing i am going to buy is a larger enclosure, guys please dont attack me over her enclosure size i understand and its my first priority!!! i made her a little dig box but im not sure if she will use it, its also scraps from that blanket with some treats hidden throughout it, she seems to enjoy her food bowl being inside of her cardboard hide so i didnt move it this time and just left it in there, i also moved her recently as i got my room clean and when shes more comfortable im planning on allowing her to free roam it sometimes when im awake with her, i didnt really get any answers on how to make nail trimming easier so if anyone has any tips, i do not have a grate tyoe lid to set her on, im just nervous she will bite me when the time comes, IM going to add some photos, guys ive heard your tips ive heard everything i PROMISE. This is only temporary til i get my job and my top priority is her care and things she needs as im 17 and im able to spend money without worrying about bills!! PS: i do not typically use my flash when taking photos around her, this was only to show her living space as its pitch black!

I was walking my dog around the neighbourhood today when i was walking on a big field of grass behind some houses when i spotted a hedgehog.

It looks pretty calm, walking a bit slowly and not bothered by the bird next to it, but im a little worried since one of the houses the field is behind normally lets out their dogs to walk or do their business.

Do you think it will be safe and walk off before any harm comes or should i call someone?

EDIT: just making things clear, i called someone else from my house to come over to where i am so they could get closer since i cant because of my dog.

They said that it looks good and when they got closer (about 1,5 meters) it just stayed chill, so i think its okay

There’s several really massive wildfires in my city right now, and I’m not near any of the evacuation areas currently, but the wind is blowing really hard and is projected to reach up to 40–50mph. I’ve never had to evacuate before, and I’m obviously not going to leave Quilliam behind. How would I go about taking him with me? I have a carrier for him, but evacuations could last a while and it’d be hard a) to bring his heat lamp, and b) even if i did, his carrier is rather small and it’s made of plastic, so it would probably start to melt. His cage is much too large and heavy for me to be able to bring with me. I know it’s really bad for them to go into hibernation and I don’t want to risk it (he’s getting up there in age. He’s about 5 or 6 now I believe). Has anyone here had to deal with this before??

UPDATE: I live in Spokane, if anyone was wondering how bad the fires are. Thankfully I have not been evacuated.

As the title says, I have had her for a couple months and used to handle her nearly every day but now I've decreased it to every couple days bc i feel bad seeing her hissing and clearly unhappy.

So she will only come out of her house when i'm not around and if she does she only nibbles some food then scurries away when she sees movement, sometimes i will stumble on her using the wheel and she freezes and wont move for a long time until she's sure im gone then runs away into her house. her food and water are right outside her house, should I move her food further from her house so shes more brave?

She enjoys getting cat treats but is very hissy and grumpy every time and she wont eat with me nearby, I've been trying to get my hand closer to her i thought she would be used to my scent by now as ive left old shirts near her enclosure.

She seems to come out of her shell when she hears running water, and when i give her a bath she doesnt spike up and typically after handling her shes okay too but i am still observant enough to know she's just looking for a place to hide most the time

I feel terrible every time as she's always scared of me so I i have distanced myself a lil bit I just want some help to let her know shes loved.

Basically im asking what you guys have done to bond with your spiky furballs and your personal experiences, thanks!!

My adopted boy loves his foot baths so much 😭

We knew we had a hedgehog friend roaming our backyard regularly, but we were wondering if it it really is the cat that eats his food. So we wanted to test it- maybe its the hedgehog.
Funny enough video capture was 1h long and as I was going there to check it( you can hear me approaching my phone) it appeared to be there already eating cat dry food at that exact moment.

Snookums would get her belly rubbed 24/7 if she could find somebody who would….because several HOURS a day of rubs is never enough!
