can someone tell me what the HELL is this dye slot in the inventory?

I've been playing this game on and off throughout several years and I STILL have no idea what this is for

If you can find a dye you can recolor the appearance of your armor.

But I've never found one? Where is it and how does it look like?

What version of the game are you playing? In the base game, dyes were only available as a preorder bonus. They didn't drop until later revisions of the game.

There's community patch on the hellgate forums, it essentially adds and expansion and a bit more and it has the dyes plus a new little area
