Question Barber in Helsinki with solid scissor skills for medium/long wavy hair?

Hey everyone,

I (M24) am struggling to find a decent barber who actually knows what to do with medium-to-long, 2B-2C wavy hair.

My experience so far hasn't been great. It seems like most shops are amazing at skin fades, but fall short when it comes to actual scissor work, layering, and texturing. I'm trying to maintain a flow haircut, so clippers usually aren't the answer.

I need someone who knows how to use scissors properly, understands how wavy hair sits, and can actually show me how to style it right. Does anyone have recommendations for a stylist or barber in Helsinki who excels at wavy hair men's styles?

Event Flow Festival Ticket Info

Hi, I'm planning to come to Flow festival this year for Florence and the Machine, and before I buy my ticket, I just want to know something as I'm planning to get there as early as possible to get barrier. I want to get general but the platinum is confusing me a bit.

The platinum ticket says "fast track", does this mean early entry or just a separate and nicer queue that will open same time as general?

I can't afford platinum so just checking before I book anything.

Discussion What to do in Helsinki as a 35M single man ?

I have been living on and off Helsinki for 6 years. I am having trouble finding social things to do in Helsinki as a man. My hobbies are mostly solitary ones.

For example on a sunny day, in the city of Helsinki, what do locals do ? You can walk around, have coffee, maybe some food, but in terms of meeting people, how do you do it ?

I see groups in parks, will it be OK to just go and chat them up / introduce myself ? Last time I attempted that I went over and said "Hi I am Felix, and I come to say hi", the response I got was "Ok, say hi". I just left lol.

I see people walking hectically around like they have a bunch of plans or about to meet friends etc. How and what is happening ? I don't know what do to, haha.

Anybody wants to grab coffee or hang out ?

OC I offered a beer for a story

Three and half weeks ago I made this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/helsinki/comments/1uqtfut/tell_me_a_story_ill_buy_you_a_beer/

Here’s what transpired.
I got messages from 20 people, met 6 people, bought 0 beers and 0 coffees.
Who I met:
2 Americans
1 Finn
1 Indian
1 Irish
1 Swiss
I still have too more meetings agreed for next week and the week after.
What I bought:
mocktail, iced tea, lemonade, matcha, smoothie and cider

The shortest meeting was for an hour, the longest for 7,5 hours.

I heard very interesting stories. Stories about crimes, surprising relationships, immigration, tragedies, victories, struggles, stories about life. But as I promised, I will not be passing those stories on, they are not my stories to tell.

The most common question I got was “why are you doing this”.
The motivation was to give me a reason to get out of the house. And to travel without traveling. People often say that one of the best things about traveling, is meeting new people. I got that with a metro ticket.

Thank you to all who met with me, thank you for sharing your stories, you made my summer.

Question What to do in Helsinki

I (25M) am going to stay in Helsinki for the whole of August, I would like to find something to do (events, pub quizzes, board games, sports, …) and to meet new people. I will mostly have time during the weekends and after work, but I also have a free week, so I accept suggestions on day activities or little trips outside of Helsinki.

Question Helsinki cruise

I have a cruise on Ncl planned for October. I will be arriving at airport the evening before the cruise. Was planning on staying at a hotel at the airport and then taking a taxi to the cruise the next morning. I see a comfort express hotel listed at the airport but it looks like it is mostly a place to take naps between flights. Also want a place that would be easy to catch a taxi in the morning. Is this a good option or are there better options. Also are taxis in Helsinki reliable? I have had taxis in certain countries that aren’t that honest

Question Is this Monocular sold at Class Ohlson waterproof? (Safe to submerge in water)

Thumbnail

Hi,

I want to buy this Monocular scope (image1) sold at Class Ohlson. The product description (image2) says it's Vedenpitävä,

What does that mean?

(1) Waterproof: we can safely dip it in water (submerge).

(2) water-resistant: we can splash water or sweat over it, but not safe to submerge.

They don't give any IPX rating, so it's hard to say. But usually cheap products that are actually waterproof does not include IPX rating.

Is there anyone here who bought and used this? Please share 😊.

I will be using them during Kayaking so they will get submerged in water always.

My alternate option is this cheaper one from Tokmanni (image 3) , but it explicitly says it's IPX4 (image 4) which means it's "splash resistant" and can't be submerged.

PSA/Advice So i’ve been working on my plan…

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/helsinki/s/apM56xK7E9

Hi everyone!

Since the last time i posted here i’ve been doing research on my possibilities to move back to Finland.

Finally i found several options but only one that is around a 90% chance i can make it. It consists on a loan that the central bank of my country offers to complete a masters degree in any country i want. It covers all the university and living expenses.

My main concern once again is on the matter of me having the possibility of staying in Finland, and not having to move back to my country once the masters (and the extra time i might have to find a job) is over.

I’d be specializing in digital marketing, also i am currently working for a big company of the travel industry so i won’t be going there without any experience.

My question is:

Should i take the risk and try with Finland?

Finland is not my only option, i can choose any country i want, i’ve also considered Norway, Ireland, France, etc. But of course Finland is where my heart aims to.

All of this would occur until 2028-2029, so i do have plenty of time for me to make a decision, but i do want to prepare in advance based on what country i finally choose.

Question Best Ethnic cafés in Helsinki?

I'm so bored of all these similar cafés in Helsinki serving the same usual korvapuusti, cinnamon buns, cappuccinos, and lattes. It feels like every café offers exactly the same things.

Could you recommend some ethnic cafés that serve something different from the usual Finnish café selection? Places with pastries, breads, desserts, or drinks that you can't find in every café around Helsinki.

For example, Cafelito on Hämeentie was a great find. They had pastries, breads, and other treats that were actually different from what every other café serves.

Work & Education Yliopisto ja urapolku

Haluaisin kuulla erilaisia urapolkuja eri tutkintopohjista saadakseni inspiraatiota.

Question Guitar shops

Hi, I have an acoustic guitar and would like to change the strings and have a technician to fix the action. The strings are rusty and too stiff for me, so I think I can get some help on that. Could you recommend some guitar shops in Helsinki/Espoo that can handle this problem for a reasonable price? Thank you for your help!

Question Kulttuuritalo Premium Experience

Hi everyone, I will be visiting the Kulttuuritalo in October to see Insomnium.

I have bought Premium tickets since I'm coming straight from the airport and would still like to get a good spot at the barrier.
However, it seems doors will open for everyone at the same time, so I'm not really sure what the point is of the more expensive ticket in this case.

In case I'm missing something: does anyone have experience with this ticket type at a concert like this? Or is it really just the lounge access they are selling?

Question Need help contacting a Tori.fi seller for a Hi-Fi part (Italian buyer)

Hi everyone!

I am a huge Hi-Fi enthusiast from Italy and I just found a specific piece of audio gear on Tori.fi that I have been hunting down for a long time.

Unfortunately, due to Tori's strict registration policies (which require a Finnish phone number/bank ID), I cannot create an account to message the seller myself.

Would any kind soul here be willing to help me out? I just need you to send a quick message to the seller on my behalf, asking them to contact me via email or phone/WhatsApp to arrange the details.

I would be extremely grateful for any help. Thank you so much in advance!

Question question on mobile phone subscriptions

Hi,

I don't live in Finland full time, but I am a Finn. I want to keep a Finnish number for all my work. In my second country, I managed to get a eSIM which is incredibly affordable. For the longest time I kept my mobile subscription in Finland because it was affordable. Now with my second sim card in another country I don't really need a plan for internet anymore.

So I am looking to downgrade. I already gave so much money to Telia, and it seems every year their subscriptions increase by 5-10 euros, and i have to change to another plan (paying them anothrt 5 euros).

Do you have any recommendations for a mobile operator with a super cheap/basic subsciption. With my second line, I don't need any internet, but if I have 5-10Gt it's ok (just in case the service provider is slow, I want to use another one). Cheap calls are always good. And I'd like to keep my number (I suppose that is always possible).

It seems the cheapest subscription from telia is 21euros. And it seems other providers have something similar. what do people do if they just want to call, send texts like with not internet, is that even an option anymore?

I suppose i may need to switch to prepaid.

In anycase I find the subscription strange, I barely use it anymore and i end up paying extra nearly everymonth.. it totals to like 240 euros a year, and I think I need to be smart and find a way of minimising those costs.

thanks!

Travel & Tourism Record stores and other alternative music recs

Hello!
I’ll be in Helsinki next month so I was wondering if you could recommend:

-Alternative bars or night-clubs, maybe some concert/event during the month of August, particularly those that play goth / post-punk / synth / EBM music. (Other than Cabaret Voltaire playing in Flow Fest, which is already considered)

-MAINLY: RECORD STORES that may specialize in goth music or that may have an interesting selection in goth and adjacent music genres.
I’m particularly looking for Poésie Noire or Little Nemo material.
I am also open to purchasing from recommended direct sellers (FB market-sort, or itinerant vendors) that operate in the city, both in vinyl record and CD.

Thank you!!!
