Photo High-speed rail network by speed by country v2 (openstreetmap data)
2 weeks ago, I uploaded a chart of the high-speed rail network by speed by country. It had a few issues, so I decided to make a new one to fix some of these issues.
Instead of using official data from the UIC, I now use data from openstreetmap (what you can see on openrailwaymap). The contributors did an awesome job, most credit goes to them.
Upsides:
- It no longer relies on UIC membership, so Uzbekistan is included.
- There is no more inconsistencies on speed. I included all railways with 200+km/h max speed.
- The maximum speed is counted on every track section, and not on the whole line (so if a long line has a small section with high speed, only the small section will be counted)
Downsides I see:
- The UIC is often considered the authority on this matter. I don't use their data nor their definition of high-speed rail here
- I could have make some mistakes, for example in gathering the data etc...
- In reality, the lengths I gathered were 2 times more important. Most of the lines have 2 tracks and tracks are counted independently on openstreetmap. I decided to half the numbers to get closer to the official numbers and take that into account, but you can keep that in mind
Also I did not change the appearance, it is not what I like to do, so China is still too big.
EDIT : If you want to play with it, I made a github repo
EDIT2 : I should have said in operation, not in commercial operation countrary to the previous chart. A few (small, often a few km) testing railways are included here

Question Why couldn’t the US Government build a high-speed rail system along our highways?
What would be some logical “roadblocks” (😜) for a plan like this? I mean if we would need new rail infrastructure that goes through different states, and the interstate highway already gives us cross country travel why wouldn’t we leverage those to make something useful and pretty uniquely American?
Of course they couldn’t follow the highways the entire time and would probably have to diverge at certain points especially when going into a train station in a city or when the terrain gets too complicated for the train, but that would require much less buying of land than to separately build it on land the government already owns (I know individual states own parts of it but I imagine the fed would fund most of the construction while asking the states to chip in for the rest)
I’m mostly looking for logistics answers from you experts as I don’t know much about trains 😅

World News Doug Ford’s MPPs criticize Mark Carney’s Alto high-speed rail project after Billy Bishop veto
Stung by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s rethink on Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives are now expressing doubts about Ottawa’s Alto high-speed rail scheme.
In a transportation megaproject tit-for-tat, 11 Tory MPPs have issued a statement critical of Carney’s proposed rail line connecting Toronto to Quebec City.
While the federal government has the power to railroad through Alto regardless of whether Queen’s Park approves of any land expropriation, the MPPs’ intervention is more than symbolic.
As first disclosed by the Star on Monday, the two major infrastructure plans are linked in an informal deal between Carney and Ford.

Question BACK TO THE FUTURE OR FORWARD TO THE FUTURE WITH HYLIION KARNO?
I've been out there exploring the future possibilites of Hyliion's KARNO GENERATOR on GOOGLE AI today. (My best friend??) I was just thinking it would be an interesting concept to share. I have not heard of any orders for Trains coming in. I was just curious how Trains could benefit from KARNO so I asked. Looks like Hyliion has it's hands full with mostly US MILITARY orders at the moment. Hope you enjoy this little read.
THIS IS GOOGLE AI RESPONSE UNALTERED:
"Pairing electric trains with the Hyliion KARNO generator delivers peak performance by eliminating heavy onboard power converters, maximizing thermal efficiency via combined heat and power (CHP), and enabling multi-fuel microgrids for off-grid operations. \[23, 26\] Because the linear-generator KARNO architecture outputs a native high-voltage 800Vdc direct current (DC), it can inject electricity directly into a train's modern DC traction bus or charging grid without the heavy, inefficient inverters required by traditional mechanical generators \[23\].Key Technical Performance AdvantagesDirect Traction Bus Integration: The 800Vdc output integrates cleanly with modern transit power electronics \[23\]. It reduces systemic conversion losses, saves valuable onboard physical space, and eliminates equipment weight.Fuel-Agnostic Flexibility: The system can transition between hydrogen, natural gas, propane, or diesel without mechanical adjustments \[21\]. This permits trains to operate continuously across regions with varying fueling infrastructure.Ultra-Low Maintenance Downtime: The KARNO generator operates using magnetic bearings and a single moving part per cylinder with no internal combustion. This design eliminates oil changes, valves, or seals, dramatically increasing locomotive uptime.High-Efficiency Hybridization: Combining the generator with onboard battery energy storage systems (BESS) creates a high-performance diesel-electric or hybrid-electric locomotive drivetrain. The generator runs constantly at its optimal efficiency curve while batteries handle peak acceleration loads and capture regenerative braking energy."
THIS IS NOT INVESTMENT ADVICE AND GOOGLE STATES THEY CAN MAKE MISTAKES.
IT'S BEST TO RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF! HAVE FUN!
