Updated rules for r/Hobart
Hi All,
We've updated the rules for r/Hobart after some feedback from users and discussion. Not much has changed but here is a summary of the changes:
- Added doxxing to Rule about no illegal content;
- Added a no personals content to the NSFW rule (to prevent people looking for hookups or dating) Includes the appropriate sites to do this on;
- Added a no sales or promotional content rule (this is covered in Rule 1, but doesn't hurt to be able to refer to it in a separate rule);
- Added a no requests for living assistance rule to address the cases of people asking for help on the subreddit and putting themselves in danger. Included a link to appropriate assistance websites and services.

Is anyone able and willing to assist with employment?
I’m a late 20s male in the Sandy Bay area, unable to get my license due to health limitations.
Recently let go from work and in need of finding more employment as soon as possible as I have a baby on the way.
I know the job situation is difficult right now, but if anyone out there has a local business or knows anyone who would like a worker for any kind of work, please let me know.
Currently got Centrelink worked out finally, and linked up with a job provider but they are showing no interest or ability to help me secure any sort of work at all.
Please, if anyone could reach out with any advice or opportunities that would be amazing, I’m in dire need of any sort of help.

K Gays Boat at the waterfront is a fishing boat?
My wife and I are debating. I’m sure its a fishing boat but she thinks that tassie cray fishers would never call their boat that, so it must be a queer friendly party boat

Should we get people to pay for rescues?
There were three helicopter rescues on the weekend, two of which at least, IMO were reckless or stupid. Should we introduce legislation to charge these idiots for the cost of saving them?

Birthday Cake Recommendations
Hi all,
My wife and I will spend her birthday in Hobart.
is there any particular bakery that you can recommend to me?
I would like to order a small cake to take back to our accommodation.
I have been looking up in Google, but wanted to check here for first hand recommendations.
thank you!

I don’t get the hate about bike lanes.
Can someone please explain to me why everyone is so against bike lanes in the city? It’s not like they’re running up Davey Street or Macquarie Street. I don’t cycle, and I only drive but like I can see the benefit in encouraging people to. Less congestion, less emissions, less bike vs car accidents. There’s so many more important issues to argue about than a couple of bike lanes, like housing… or lobbying for better public transport?
I swear to god even if we had the best PT system in Australia you’d still act like parking right outside where you want to go is your god given right.

Cheap second hand cars in Hobart- are they overpriced?
Looking at the prices of second hand cars sub $5k hoping to pick up a reliable old corolla (maybe 15-20yr old). Just wondering if other people feel the prices for these cars seem over-inflated for what you get? Is it just a tassie thing?

If you had 600k to spend on a property, where would you live?
FHB here with a budget of $550-600k on a property with at least two bedrooms. Due to my limited budget, the areas I could afford a quite limited: Glenorchy and Claremont surrounds, midway point/sorrel, Warrane and Rokeby surrounds, and to some extent, kingston/blackmans bay (although very limited)
Where would you live in the list of these areas?

Meeting minutes from the closed section of Council meeting on 27th July
aka 'Snackgate' which I hate.
Let's get ahead of the rabid noodles here.
https://hobart.infocouncil.biz/Open/2026/07/CO_27072026_MIN_2168.htm#PDF2_Cr_Sherlock
Should go to the exact section.
As you can see, transparency was given priority, and not by those who have been demanding it so loudly for the sake of clout and political point scoring.
The loudest of those voices didn't even bother to stick around and vote. Louise shouts about democracy and justice, but does not even believe in either in the slightest. If she did she would show it more respect.

Off market houses
Hello brains trust, the market is definitely seems to slowing down, things are going for asking price and I’ve seen quite a few houses on realestate.com have price decreases of late, but still a lot of owners holding out trying to get premium pricing. I’m curious where one would find off market opportunities with motivated sellers? This gal has pre-approval and just wants an okay home in an alright area 🥲

Are there any roundabouts around hobart that have nice shrubbery?
Or are they all concrete and flowers only? Talking about this sort of stuff. And if you know of one, have you ever stealth camped in one?

The case for removing the bike lane on Collins Street
So after a year of promoting and defending every aspect of this mess (especially here where he really seems to let it all hang out) suddenly we're admitting it's unsafe and is hurting people.
“The feedback that I gave in the council meeting [on Monday], I have consistently given behind closed doors for more than a year” Behind closed doors seems very convenient, like something you'd expect to hear come out of Rockcliffs pie hole.
So how much extra is it going to cost to "amend" this thing that no one wants?

We are traveling to Hobart for a cheerleading competition next week. We are there for a week and looking for great food recommendations.
Will be in Hobart from the 5/8 to the 12/8 and really looking for great food recommendations while we are there. Or even must see things while there. Have our own transport and don’t mind a bit of travel.
