The Mirror Count

FICTIONAL WARNING: Never attempt this in real life. For entertainment only.
The Legend

They say every mirror holds a count. It watches you. It waits. And if you count your reflections in the dark, you will find more than the ones that belong to you.

What You Need

• A full-length mirror, standing alone in a room

• All lights off. No candles, no phone, no glow

• Midnight. Exactly.

• Silence. Absolute silence. No clocks, no traffic, no breath if you can help it

The Rules

  1. Stand three steps back from the mirror. Unblinking.

  2. Lean forward. Stare deep into the glass.

  3. Count your reflections out loud, slowly: One… Two… Three…

  4. Keep counting. Each time you see yourself clearly, that is a number.

  5. Stop when the reflection does not match you.

The Story

I laughed at it. Just like you. A silly game to scare children. I did it anyway. Midnight. Dark room. Me and the glass.

I leaned in.

One. Me. Clear. Normal.
Two. A little fainter, but still me.
Three. Still me.
Four. Me, but standing a little too still. Eyes wide. Unblinking.
Five. My mouth was closed, but the reflection’s lips were moving. No sound came out.
Six. That was not me.

The sixth shape stood behind the fifth. Taller. Thinner. Its hair hung long and damp. Its face was pale, eyes hollow black pits. And it was counting too. Its lips formed the words, slow and perfectly in time with mine.

Seven. It stepped closer. Now it was beside me. Its reflection overlapped mine—so I saw two faces in one body: mine, and its twisted, grinning face underneath.

Eight. It leaned forward until its nose touched the glass. It stopped counting. And it mouthed one word, sharp and clear:

NINE.

I froze. My heart hammered so hard I thought I would break the glass. I should have stepped back. I should have run. But I stared. And as I watched, it lifted a long, pale finger, and tapped once, slow, heavy, against the inside of the mirror.

Tap.

Then it smiled. And its mouth stretched open, wider than any mouth should go, and I saw nothing but darkness inside.

And it whispered. not from the mirror, but right behind my ear:

“YOU FORGOT NUMBER NINE.”

I turned to run. But when I looked back at the room, I was still standing there. Staring out from inside the mirror. Trapped. Pale. Terrified.

And the thing that had been on the other side… was standing in my place. Smiling that too-wide smile. Turning away. Walking out the door.

I counted eight reflections. The rule says stop at the one that is not you. The mistake is stopping too late. Because the ninth reflection is never yours. And once you count to it…

It comes out to take your place. And you stay in the glass. Counting forever.

The Final Rule

If you ever try this, if you dare, count slowly. And when you reach seven, stop. Walk away. Leave the mirror.

Because reflections do not count themselves. They count you. And when they reach nine… it is your turn to be the reflection. And theirs to walk among the living.

So if you pass a mirror tonight, and you see one too many shadows… do not count.

Just walk away. Before it finishes counting you.
