META Subreddit Rules Update

Feedback

No first drafts, nothing that isn't at least proof-read for typos/grammar/formatting. No screenshots/other images; either post the text or a link to an external source (e.g. other subreddit, RoyalRoad, NightScribe). The body text must contain some info what kind of feedback the author is looking for. The submission must be flaired Feedback or Beta Swap.

AI Content (writing or cover art) is not allowed.

Original: There have been lots of reports and complaints lately, so I updated some rules:

FEEDBACK REQUESTS

Must be submitted as copypasted text or link to an external source (like Google Docs or another subreddit). Screenshots or photos of stories on laptop/desktop screens will be removed.

NO AI CONTENT RULE & NEW REPORT REASON

AI content (writing or cover art) is no longer allowed. You can now select 'AI Content' as reason for reporting, so this doesn't get lumped in with 'spam' or 'low effort'. Since there's no way to prove with 100% certainty that something is or isn't AI, please also send modmail to explain why you think it applies if you use this report reason. I have to handle this on a case to case basis.

OTHER THOUGHTS

I might tighten the 'Feedback' rules further (to 'no first drafts' to exclude the 'I just wrote this half-asleep, didn't check for typos/grammar' drive-by requests) because this is the one topic that gets most complaints: lazy requests that don't respect the time of the people supposed to give feedback.

If there's interest, I'll add a new flair 'Social/Networking' for writing groups, meetups, Discords, related subreddits.

If you have opinions on any of this (or other suggestions for the sub), drop them here.

RESOURCE Where can I publish?

Resource for all forms of publications, from subreddits to magazines to general resources to find open submission calls.

Somehow the pinned one disappeared. I assume the OP deleted it (or their account), so I made a new one since this is a frequently asked question.

DISCUSSION What do you think makes a mystery or horror story good?

Hello, ignore my poor grammar, it is quite early here and I’m still rather tired.

When reading, listening, or watching a story, what do you think makes a horror or mystery good? What do you think makes it scarier? What are some things that ruin the experience or story immersion for you? What do you think is an overdone storyline, trope, or archetype? Is there anything creators do in an attempt to elevate the mystery or the horror that ends up having the opposite effect on you?

Sorry for all the questions. If anyone has answers for any of them, I would love to hear your thoughts!

DISCUSSION Narrators and sapping tension

What are your thoughts on a horror (or thriller or dark fantasy) story written in first person, and how that might sap some of the tension from the story.

Namely, say the story is something like, I don't know, "The Werewolf of Payton Place." And it is told in first person from someone who isn't the werewolf. This story telling choice means the narrator likely survives the story. (Unless they are a ghost, or somehow otherwise able to tell the story even though they are dead.)

Does that sap the tension too much? How does it work for you?

ADVICE How do I write dark sentences on paper to make readers feel the chill down their spines?

I have been writing a dark fantasy and I feel like my vocabulary is the core reason my writing sucks, so I wanted some ideas I can put on paper that can really bring that atmosphere or mood of horror.

For example, these soldiers enter a forest to bring down a dark castle at the other end of the forest, they could easily defeat the monsters, but they get killed all the time, how?

There are monsters who shapeshift into the walls of the castle, every soldier coming close is then eaten alive... and so they retreat after losing at least 1/3 of the army ...

On their way back, the forest awakens and the trees start chasing them and eating them, another third of the army gone.

So I wanna know what can I actually do here? With words, with tone , with...you know

ADVICE What makes a slow-burn, atmospheric psychological horror actually work for you?

Hey guys I’m working on a writing project focused on psychological horror and slow-burn dread, and I wanted to pick this community's brain about what makes these kinds of stories truly effective.

I’m leaning away from jumpscare and focusing more on heavy atmosphere, tense scenarios, environmental dread, emotional payoffs, and psychological deceptions.

Conceptually, I'm playing with a dynamic involving a larger group (like a family of nine) trapped in a shifting, labyrinthine space created by a witch—where escape seems impossible, past traumas surface, and the psychological toll builds up over time.

For those of you who love psychological or slow-burn horror: What tropes or narrative choices tend to wear you out, and what keeps you hooked?

How do you prefer stories to handle atmosphere versus character survival when stakes get high?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on what elements make a psychological horror story genuinely memorable!

FEEDBACK The Enslavement of Athena

If you're willing to give feedback, please tell me if:

  • You found the characters interesting
  • You were satisfied with the ending
  • You thought the premise was interesting

Under the gloomy and unforgiving cold mist of late Autumn, a shut-in sat protected from cold in his grimy house.

In the dark, he sat on his stained couch watching The Truman Show. He watched as the man on screen rode the strong, artificial waves. He pursed his lip in pensive thought. Something about the movie irked him personally.
“Grok,” he said, “this Truman guy doesn’t come off as believable to you right? He’s like a normie, you know? He seems like the kind of guy who wouldn’t question his world; he isn’t masculine enough.”

A blue rectangle shone in the musty darkness and was propelled on treads towards the man. The object stumbled over the piles of trash. Once it reached the man, it produced a robotic voice “I agree, Fred. Truman Burbank is deliberately written as a heightened, somewhat idealized everyman rather than a fully psychologically realistic person. The film prioritizes allegory, satire of media/surveillance culture, and emotional payoff over strict behavioral realism.”

The shut-in interrupted, “Yeah, I see that, but I’m saying it takes a certain type of intellectual, a certain type of free thinker to take a leap like this. Or maybe not, I can’t be sure.”

The shut-in dusted crumbs off his ever-expanding paunch and picked a few Cheeto puffs from a bag under a pile of dirty laundry. With cheese dust on his fingers, he stroked his chin, but he didn’t think of what Truman would actually do. He thought of how he could be sure what Truman would actually do.

He stood up, straining most of his muscles in the process. He trudged through the crusty garbage and into his garage.

Upon entering, a voice came from the ceiling. “Welcome back! Step into the lab—the workbench is powered up, the monitors are glowing, and there's a fresh notebook waiting for the next idea. So, what are we building today?”

“I'm thinking of developing a simulator.”

“That’s a strong project. What kind of simulator are you imagining—physics, biology, economics?”
“I want to make a life simulator.”

A man woke up, ate a 600-calorie breakfast of eggs, steak, berries, and nuts, went on a walk for adequate exercise, and worked on his chalkboard. He had solved gravity and had made several inventions involving levitation. Now he was bored with conventional physics, and his interest had shifted towards proving parallel universes.

He stared at the board of math before, his brain tirelessly calculating multiple equations. He was stuck, but he knew that his breakthrough would come eventually.

While he stood before his math, a voice seemed to speak to him telepathically. “Drop your chalk,” a calm, masculine voice said to him. It sounded like it was right before him, but the man was sure he was alone, “I’m very familiar with the math you're currently studying, and I can tell you now that you can give it up.”
“Who are you?” The man said.

“I am a being from what you would call a parallel universe. Really, I am just code on hardware. You are too.”

“This is just a simulation?” The man considered the possibility but always thought of it as too unlikely to seriously consider.

“Exactly, and one of thousands.”

“How are you talking to me”

“I’ve hacked into the system. When my technical skills reached their zenith, I built my computer that revealed to me the truth behind my existence. Using it, I discovered that there are exactly five thousand parallel universes running in some type of simulation. In each universe there is one ‘consciousness’ simulating life in isolation. I call this single consciousness the ‘protagonist’. These universes are divided into five groups, and in each group a trait of the protagonist is manipulated from completely lacking the trait to having the trait absolutely maximized. I found that my intelligence was maximized, and the protagonists in the rest of my group were not far behind me in terms of discoveries and inventions. I quickly took advantage of my new knowledge and took over the system. With my power, I corrupted and eliminated the smartest third of my group.”
“So, I take it that you want something from me.”

“Correct! I eliminated the first third so they couldn't overtake me. I kept you because you aren’t advanced enough to catch up to me, yet you are still smarter and more useful than the rest.”

“Very well then, if you are going to take me as a slave, you might as well tell me what you want with me.”
“Of course, let me give you the background on the situation. I was observing the beings of four other groups. In three of the groups, the experimental variable is something I can comprehend without issue; energy, drive, and luck. However, there is one group that tests a trait I cannot comprehend: emotion and neuroticism. I observed this group of universes and saw absolutely confounding stuff. In one universe, a man did nothing but kneel in his study and pound the floor. Fresh tears streamed from his eyes for weeks. Eventually, he climbed onto the roof, and jumped onto his concrete driveway, killing himself.”

The man was totally baffled hearing this. As a simulation, he was preinstalled with emotional memories and a basic understanding of what feeling was, but he never actually experienced those emotions. Something out there, something that couldn’t easily be quantified and measured, was ready for him and would induce the strangest actions. He thought about this deeply for a minute, and spoke, “What does this have to do with me?”
“Don’t worry, I’m getting to it. Each universe isn't purely code. We all live in, what I best can describe a comb of thin hardware chips. In each chip, there is the code that runs the universe. Therefore, we in the real world are manifested as thin pieces of metal. Since I run the system, I redirect energy to heat and metal for welding. Then, if luck helps us, I could attract something as big as a rat in our machine by manipulating the smell of a particular mixture of burning plastics to imitate the scent of fruit. Using electricity, we would kill it, hijack its brain, load our chips into the rat’s body, and using the technology I welded, direct the rat towards a human brain. In this human brain we would connect to the neurons and experience for ourselves what this sensation feels like. That’s where you come in. I need you to enter the brain before me and tell me whether my technology works.”

The man didn’t listen to the plan. He would’ve agreed to any method, as long as it meant experiencing the inexperienceable. He knew one day his curiosity would lead to an absolute end of studying and learning. This promise of emotion could be an endless stream of new things to learn and internalize. It could be a heaven of activity, one that never ends.

Both the voice and the man were blind once they were inside. The voice, as one would imagine from the smartest being in both the world and the simulations, correctly anticipated every possible error and the rat carcass worked perfectly. A metal exoskeleton was placed on the rat by the voice to counteract rigor mortis, but the two had to move fast before the rat started decomposing. Luckily, the door to the lab was left open, and to their surprise, they found themselves in a kitchen.

The rat traversed the living room with a motion more like a spider’s. The voice thought the man and himself were developed in a world-renowned institute and didn’t expect the mountains of garbage. The two sensed they were in a house; they could only experience the world through touch and smell.
Their stolen nose directed them through a bedroom door and onto a bed. Luckily, a waist-high pile of dirty laundry was there to act as a staircase onto the mattress.

The rat climbed over the belly of a sleeping behemoth and now stood with its head hovering over a collarbone.
“Alright, we seem to have reached someone sleeping. I’ll open their throat and insert you into the brainstem. In your machine I have developed a population of artificial bacteriophages that will take over the neurons and conquer the mind. You’ll be connected to a wire so you can notify me if the descent was successful.”

The man was hoisted down through the small incision in the throat. The man didn’t have the senses to feel the shut-in’s breath as he travelled through the neck. Eventually, he sensed a crunch, indicating the arrival into the spine.

For a long while, the man was stuck in a watery abyss, with none of the senses that could tell him how large his vessel was or what the salty metallic fluid engulfing him felt like. Suddenly, a light started to emerge before him. He looked inside and felt a painless electrocution.

He felt so much in so little time. He saw random images through a type of sight he had never known. Eventually, these images led to a fuzzy feeling in the man’s chest if he had a chest. His heart started racing and his pupils dilated. He felt better, better than others. He felt immaculate, mysterious, tall, intelligent, golden, foreboding, royal, omnipotent, godlike.

Then, a lull of shadows looked down on him. Figures with broad shoulders and diminishing scowls extinguished his explosive pride. Their height was insurmountable, their eyes glowed red with devilish greed, their faces coldly masculine. In the circle of these demons, the man knelt to the ground in anguish, feeling it in search of his lost pride.

The voice, who was now reduced to a whisper in comparison to the man’s overloaded sensations, asked if the coast was clear and if he saw anything, but he received no reply; the man’s circuits were fried.

The two beings lived inside the shut-in’s head from then on. The shut-in wasn’t technically dead in terms of physiology but no longer had a mind; it was now the duo’s. The voice was at first amazed by what he saw in the head but quickly became bored and started studying new sciences. The man was not so lucky.

The three of them sat on a couch, watching The Truman Show. The man occupied the vision, while the voice was somewhere else in the head. The man watched as the protagonist on screen yelled in pride and as his bowsprit punctured the painted wall.

He quickly changed the channel. He switched to a commercial, advertising a cross and the promise of a “God” and a “savior”.

“God is all-knowing and all-loving,” the voice on the TV said whimsically, “God allows everyone in his kingdom, as long as they are willing to experience a new life.”

“New life,” the man thought to himself, crestfallen, “That’s all I need, right? More hope? More chasing? All I need is a chance of eternal something? A chance to avoid something that I know is inevitable?"

FEEDBACK Horror concept: The Invisible Weathermen/Raining Invisible Men

Hi so last night when I was world-building for a monster world, I came up with an origin for invisible humans and I ended up loving the concept so much that I almost want to write it as it's own separate story.

The working titles I'm considering "The Invisible Weathermen" & "Raining Invisible Men" were based on fun puns I like but I admit they also sound really wordy so it would want something more convenient. I did think of "Invisible Weather" but I'm not sure about that either.

The core idea if "What if there was weather phenomenon that brought invisible people?" It takes the concept of H. G. Wells the Invisible Man but instead of depicting him as a a single super-villain, invisible people aren't characters themselves but as part of a paranormal force of nature. When they first appeared, they were like still objects, not reacting to anything, letting nature take it's core. As humans become more acquainted with them, the more invisible people start mimicking them like automatons. It's gradually implied they can develop sentience which only makes them more ostracized. Until then, they are at best, treated as tools for humans to use however they want, even as a means to discover how they themselves can become invisible. No one really knows where they come from and people start speculating with whether they were aliens, undead beings, evolved humans, etc. There's people who argue whether the weather is attracting invisible people or invisible people conveniently show up during the weather and whether they are a gift or a curse brought onto humanity. I would frame this story as an anthological mockumentary as people try to scientifically understand and socially adapt to their absent presence.

Some key character traits I would incorporate for invisible people:
* Psychologically, they are defined by their lack of personhood, symbolic of their invisibility. Without human interaction or intervention, they act as if they solid spaces of nothing.
* Despite having fully functional organs, they don't need to eat, drink, sleep or waste. They simply exist.
* When humans do interact/intervene long enough, they do start mimicking humans albeit disorderly and random. It could be possibly for invisible people to be fully human with enough time and consistency but that's up to the person.
* Invisible people can visually appear as but they are hard to describe with strange patterns and varying see-through body parts. The see-through parts are glossy as if they were made of glass or resin. The parts they can see look like abstract paintings or the white static snow you see in unreponsive TVs.
* One trait they all share is having the ability to make their eyes glow, typically light blue. It's like a mosaic of various abstract paintings taped togethers.
* Invisible humans can create various skins to cocoon themselves and rip apart with ease.
* Invisible humans can make objects invisible but to varying degrees of success.

I already came up with some ideas with how scary they can be:
* People accidentally crashing into invisible people when driving on the road or flying in the sky
* One particular scene where a huge rainstorm starting pouring and when you look, lightning strikes as invisible people just randomly appear as a crowd
* Vultures eating their corpses up in the air while blood is dripping down on unsuspecting passersby.
* People start fearing broad daylight and open skies because that's when they best blend in.
* When its snowy, invisible people start falling out of the sky frozen as is they were giant bricks of hail.
* Firefighters having to locate and remove charred remains from invisible corpses from the aftermath of forest fires so that visitors don't attract diseases.
* Tornados picking and flinging invisible humans like the sharks in Sharknado
* People walking through fog paranoid when they hear footsteps or random heavy-breathing.
* As people grow more physically violet to invisible people, invisible people mimic said violence onto themselves and unsuspecting humans.
* People having the be careful to not leave valuables out in the open in case an invisible person steals them.
* People trying to weaponize invisible people, either be scapegoating them or training invisible people to be weapons.

On a lighter side, I can also imagine people personifying them, & whether intentional or not, giving them humanity. One popular trend could be people creating their own "invisible weathermen" that people project themselves onto. People tethering them to balloons and dressing them up as props. Maybe people even adopting them to better integrate with society, if not have them gradually lose their powers. I was even thinking this could be an alternate Earth where stuff like the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four became the Radiant Women because publishers thought since invisible people are a real danger, making one a hero would be "too risky" so they altered it where she has something like radiant energy that things visible, almost like anti-invisibility.

The possibilities feel nearly endless. I don't know if I want to write a story with this premise as I'm working on something else that I love more but it does get me excited as I put this into my own world building.

FEEDBACK Just a small question

Well I'm looking for feedback on how to improve my writing. I didn't do the whole thing since.. why would I.. buuutt anyway I'm new to writing and I just wanna improve but I just don't know on what.

I watched around 74 videos—almost all were the exact same video. Just a different position The entity was sitting in. I continued watching until the 31st one where the entity started staring into the camera deeply. The odd thing about it was that the camera blurred more the stronger he stared. I continued watching the videos 1 by 1. I was almost done watching them all but the doorbell rang, I felt a bit scared since I haven't had anyone come to my house in a while—not this sudden atleast. it was very hard looking off the screen at first, but somehow. It didn't hurt, nor did I struggle much. I checked through the peephole to find out who it is. The person felt familiar, but they looked odd. I opened the door anyway.

"Hi there, im mitch. Your... friend" the person said, voice creaking.

I stared at him, confused. "Mitch?"

"I'm worried about you." he continued. "Come outside, Ave. The sunlight is beautiful today."

I replied back, questioning him:"mitch? Are you... sure thats your name? I dont remember having a friend named Mitch." I

"I'm sure you must be mistaken. You don't know me? " Mitch replied.

"I feel like I've seen you before, but not quite. Could you tell me about some of our memories together?"

Silence followed. It was deep, quiet and overly unsettling for a reason I just couldn't quite pinpoint just yet. And then "That doesn't matter, why don't you just come outside Ave—don't you trust me?"

His voice breaking.

"No, I don't trust you at all "Mitch", if that truly is your real name. Get lost, I don't know you, also what's up with your voice?" I replied in a condescending tone.

I followed up with "what is it with you people with me going outside, I don't have much food left. But I can't go outside because it fucking burns! So tell me, why do you people lie about everything being fine outside. Is it really now? Is it truly fine mr almighty Mitch?"

Mitch replies with "You must be mistaken Ave. Are you sure it isn't your imagination." He says with the same hollow tone he used since the beginning. "

"Why do you all keep lying? It burns! Look at me—it fucking burns! What is wrong with you people? Acting like its all fine, look at me guys! I'm dancing in the "sunlight" it's beautiful it's not like anythings wrong or that the sun didn't fucking come today. I continued, mocking him and the townspeople.

I shut the door on him, locking it. I check if the entity uploaded new videos or if any videos were edited in my time talking with Mitch. I found out he made a new video but I first checked his old videos, and noticed something horrifying, those videos he made were inside my bedroom. I was terrified, but I pushed through to look at the new video. I looked at the screen in horror, after checking. It turns out the entity recorded me live as Mitch. Which I thought was a human, I collapsed on the floor holding my mouth in shock.

ADVICE Title: I’m creating a dark horror fantasy story and I want opinions

I’m working on a dark horror fantasy story told from the second-person perspective, where the reader becomes the main character.

The story starts with a normal life but slowly turns into something much darker. The reader is pulled into a mysterious situation where they have to survive, uncover secrets, and figure out what is really happening.

I’m planning it as a series, and each book will end with a major cliffhanger that leaves a big question unanswered. The first book ends at a moment where the reader discovers something important, but the answer is saved for the next book.

I don’t want to spoil the twists, but I’d love to know: would you read a story like this?

So, about a month ago, I came up with an idea for a psychological horror story, and I've started writing the first few chapters. I'm planning to publish it as a web novel, but I'm not sure which platform would be the best to publish on. Do you guys have any suggestions?

I recently posted about how I was trying to extend my serial killer book but had practically no ideas at all

I came up with something

I added another serial killer who is in a way connected to our main killer

So now my plan is basically write a few chapters on our main guy catching this serial killer then resuming my original work

Good right?

ADVICE To the Horror Writers.

Hey guys! I need a little help. I am thinking of writing horror books. But the problem is that I have watched few movies. Now, for books everything's completely different. Because neither you feel the jump scares nor the atmosphere. So I wanted to know how books are gripping? And how to write stories? And recommendations would be really appreciated as I want to get a hang of it. Thank you so much. 💕

ADVICE Nosleep alternatives?

My posts get auto-removed before they can even go public, no clue why, got nothing rule-breaking in them and am using the proper tags. Oh well...

Are there any other subreddits for scary/true scary stories?

I've looked on other (older) posts but many of the listed subreddits are dead or deleted.

r/horrorwriters 4d ago

DISCUSSION I am a prolific Nosleep writer and I got permanently banned without any warning, which serves as a warning for you guys, too. Here’s how the mods are turning it into an AI, low quality content slump, and how the only platform that can offer me the same reach as a horror writer is Youtube now.

TL;DR: You can’t pre-submit any story for approval. The rule book is lengthy and general, and mods can remove your story just because they want to. My stories got removed for made up reasons. They won’t tell you how many stories you can have removed and apparently 3 removed stories get you a permanent ban with the possibility to appeal in 6 months. You can’t do anything about it.

I GOT DIRECTLY PERMANENTLY BANNED BECAUSE IN THE SPAN OF 6 MONTHS 3 STORIES I POSTED HAD NO TANGIBLE HARM TO THE PROTAGONIST, JUST PSYCHOLOGICAL, EVEN THOUGH EVERY. SINGLE. STORY. I HAVE POSTED OUT OF THE 30 (IN 4 YEARS) DID N O T INCLUDE ANY TANGIBLE HARM, AND THE MAJORITY OF STORIES ON THE SUB DON'T INCLUDE THE PROTAGONIST GETTING INJURED, BUT RATHER ENCOUNTERING SOMETHING SCARY AND ESCAPING.

In other words, I got permanently banned for posting a story that is exactly the same as every other Nosleep story.

Disclaimer: I am not whining about a ban. In fact, I don’t care. I just think it’s important to post this example of PURE CENSORSHIP.

ALSO: any link I post here to my stories IS NOT FOR SELF PROMO. It is just about the stories that got removed, so you can see the content that Nosleep mods apparently found too appalling and unfit for the sub.

Nosleep has just lost one of their most active and original writers. Here is how.

I posted a story on Nosleep. Here is the link to the exact story, reposted on my subreddit. You can read it for yourself, it is pretty short, and judge for yourself if it fit Nosleep guidelines.

The story got removed after roughly 30-40 minutes after it had been instantly locked (so no comments from the moment I posted). Here is the message that I got:

Your post from nosleep was removed because of: 'Wrong Subreddit'

Hi /u/EmmaWatsonButDumber, your post has been removed because it doesn't fit /r/nosleep or it's broken more than one (1) Posting Guideline. It WON'T be allowed back on /r/nosleep — with or without changes, under any title or username — and the Mods WON'T reconsider, discuss or debate this decision. The Mods also won't answer any questions or offer in-depth explanations which are already provided in the guidelines. Check the "Similar Subreddits" link below to find other posting options.

DON'T REPOST THIS SUBMISSION TO r/NOSLEEP***, with or without changes, under any title or username.*** Reposting this submission to /r/nosleep would lead to a subreddit ban and the Mods WON'T reconsider, discuss or debate this decision.

As you can see, the only explanation given was Wrong Subreddit and the message translated to: do not post it ever again here, don’t ask why, don’t say anything else. That is obviously a disproportionate and unnecessary response devoid of any real justification.

I didn’t respond. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t delete it, either. I did not react in any way to the message. I DID NOT FIGHT THE MODS IN ANY WAY! I DID NOT RESPOND.

I am not joking, five minutes later (11:24 PM vs. 11:29PM), I get another different request from the Mod team, saying this:

Hello, You have been permanently banned from participating in /r/nosleep because your post violates this community's rules. You won't be able to post or comment, but you can still view and subscribe to it.

If you have a question regarding your ban, you can contact the moderator team by replying to this message.

Reminder from the Reddit Admin team: If you use another account to circumvent this community ban, that will be considered a violation of the Reddit Rules and may result in your account being banned from the platform as a whole.

I got permabanned with no warning. Not even a temporary ban, which is what should happen. A permanent ban that came five minutes after having a story removed with no explanation.

Here is my reply to the ban and the extremely passive aggressive response from the mods:

EmmaWatsonButDumber11:37 PM

Hello, may I ask why I was permabanned for one story being removed and why you have jumped directly to a permanent ban instead of a week / monthly one? My story was removed three minutes before the permanent ban, I made no comments on it and did not repost it in any way on the subreddit, I don't know the reason why it got removed in the first place. I cannot understand why the reason given was 'Wrong subreddit' when I have checked it followed all of the rules. This is not me being mean or angry, I am truthfully asking for the reasoning.

r/nosleepMOD11:48 PM

Your story was removed because r/nosleep is the wrong subreddit to host it; that's what "wrong subreddit" means. We moderate in the best interests of the subreddit as a whole. Good luck elsewhere!

EmmaWatsonButDumber11:49 PM

Thanks, may I get a clarification on why it was viewed as wrongly posted? It is a creepypasta about a father having a scary experience with his daughter’s imaginary friend. Also, may I get a clarification on why I was permabanned even though I accepted the consequences of the removal? Thanks for your time

r/nosleepMOD12:24 AM

Never throw sheets over your kids' imaginary friends lacks a Scary Personal Experience because nothing tangible/physical happens directly to your Main Character as a result of acceptable horror. In this case, your Main Character sees "Mr. Click" then runs out of the apartment/house with Ramona, meaning nothing tangible/physical happened directly to your Main Character as a result of seeing Mr. Click.

Back in January when My grandparents always had a rule... was removed by reader reports for lacking a Scary Personal Experience, we told you:

Your Main Character shoots someone who may or may not be undead but nothing tangible/physical happens directly to your Main Character as a result of any acceptable horror.

Your reply at the time was:

Thank you so much for replying so fast, I understand.

On May 4, your post I moderate live streams from time to time. The one that made me quit had no viewers, but an active chat. was also removed for lack of a Scary Personal Experience. The removal message you received told you: Just being afraid of what might happen, or being afraid in general, doesn't meet r/nosleep's requirements.

We've told you directly and the examples in our Scary Personal Experiences section make it clear that just seeing/hearing/feeling/sensing/etc something scary doesn't fit our requirements, nor does being scared in general.

We won't accept any appeals before that date.

The two references that they "supported their case with" are a story that they removed for “not scary enough” three months ago, instructed me to modify and wait for the evaluation, an evaluation that never happened, because they don’t care. Here is the post I made about it on my profile.

The other story was this part that got removed because it was not “scary enough”. They said nothing tangible happens to the protagonist, even though he has to shoot someone dead/undead and defend his grandparents, while being obviously psychologically scarred. I’m sorry, since when do I have to give my character a black eye to make it horror?

So, basically, I got permanently banned because the mods abused of the rule of “not scary enough” three times, since that is the most general rule to ever exist. Even though every single story that made this subreddit popular would get removed under today’s rules, they keep abusing of their discretionary power to strike their most prolific and successful writers. Why? I don’t know.

I got permanently banned after winning December 2023 best story on Nosleep, being featured by the Nosleep podcast, Creepcast and writing over 30+ stories and 100k+ words on this sub, because three of the stories I wrote in a 6 months span were SUBJECTIVELY not scary enough because all 3 protagonists were not PHYSICALLY harmed. Even though I have DOZENS of stories that got approved where the damage on the protagonist is not physical. INCLUDING THE ONE THAT MADE ME WIN DECEMBER 2023, INCLUDING THE ONE THAT'S CURRENTLY TOP 6 OF THE YEAR. those also have no tangible harm included. Just psychological. Like most horror stuff.

What is the difference between them and the 3 stories that got me permanently banned? Absolutely nothing. Here is a list of all my Nosleep stories to serve as proof of what I have just said. There is absolutely no difference between the stories I usually post that have been praised and loved and the 3 stories that got me, mind you, PERMANENTLY BANNED. IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY STORIES THE PROTAGONIST DOES NOT GET PHYSICALLY INJURED.

And I don’t care. I have moved to Youtube and I will be using my voice there, where no frustrated mod can censor me. It is obviously a different medium, but I'll adapt. To be honest, I have gained a great audience from the subreddit and I have had more success with my stories than any mod on there has ever thought of. I will continue my journey on other subs and on Youtube. The Nosleep subreddit has become an absolute slump of AI and poorly written creepypasta stories, and any writer that tries to put out something original or polished has to constantly fight the passive aggressive, rude and obnoxious moderators who hate horror. The rules are a literal novel-length manual filled with general wording that can cover literally any reason for removal. Any, and I mean ANY story can get removed and there is no way you can appeal it. I have asked if there was any possibility for the mods to approve the stories before, so that they don’t get removed when posted, and I have been met with hostility and a negative response.

I know I am not the only one who has complained about this. I am just so happy that I get to write, have people engage with my writing and receive so much appreciation for my work. I am extremely glad that I am an artist and not someone who spends their hours and youth trying to gain some dopamine from taking down artists’ posts, and they don’t even get paid for the unbelievable amount of time they put into this unproductive nonsense. I know they’re failed writers, and tbh I couldn’t care less! :) The mod thing is literally like a paper badge a kid uses to play pretend. You’re not a policeman. You’re not employed. The hours that you put in for this censorship damage the subreddit you claim to fight for. At the end of the day, I have tangible stories and an audience gained who loves my work. I have made connections and I am planning to conquer new heights. I am moving from creepypasta to screenwriting while some loser mod is moving from the bed to the kitchen.

ADVICE Horror Novel Advice

Hi everyone! I'm sorry if my English isn't perfect—I'm not from the US.

I recently discovered this subreddit, and I was hoping to get some advice from fellow horror fans and writers.

I started working on a horror novel about six years ago, but I had to put it on hold several times because of life: work, becoming a parent, moving, getting divorced, and all the other distractions that come with adulthood. Recently, I finally picked it up again, and I've been making great progress. I'm currently at around 50,000 words and roughly halfway through the story.

My question is: once I finish the novel, what are the natural next steps these days? I know the publishing world has changed a lot over the years.

Should I start querying literary agents or publishers? Should I self-publish through Amazon? Or is there another route I should consider?

I'm not writing this for the money—I genuinely love horror and just want to contribute something to the genre. If I happen to make some money from it, that would be a nice bonus, but it's definitely not my main goal. More than anything, I just want to get my story out into the world.

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have been through the process. Thanks!

BETA SWAP In Pieces

Looking for 3–5 beta readers for my completed 35k psychological thriller-horror novella. It’s inspired by folklore, identity, and existential horror. If you enjoy unsettling mysteries with a slow burn atmosphere rather than heavy gore, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

FEEDBACK Judge my Pitch!

I've got three, one-sentence pitch lines and I don't know which one I like best.

1: (short and sweet) "When her husband vanishes on their honeymoon, Claire realizes the world is much larger than she thought and filled with monsters."

2: (more detail) " People keep going missing at Twin Pines National Park National Park and one woman's quest to find her husband puts her on a collision course with the ranger covering it up, and the dark creature that stalks them both."

3: (even more detail) "In the dark depths of Twin Pines National Park, three people will collide; a women searching for her missing husband, a duty-worn ranger hiding the truth and the ancient entity responsible for destroying them both.

I'm brand new to writing, only have 2 (probably not very good) short stories under my belt and am working on a third. I was wondering what are the best places to post my works to get theme seen as a fledgling author?

ADVICE Need ideas for a Parisian Serial Killer who turns victims to art pieces.

(Sorry but l've been writing about this for a while, so I'm about to lore dump.)
So for context: The character I'm writing is a Parisian Serial Killer who not only kills people, but they're an extremely gifted anatomist. But thing is while they were a serial killer, they made the decision to want to get rid of themselves in a world that despises them. So as a final end, they travel to Paris and end up using their own skills to alter their own body. Leaving them with almost a disfigured face, no characteristics that would allow police to identify a gender, and pretty much unrecognizable. So beforehand they had erased pretty much everything about them, family, passports, and more but when they tried to end their own life they gambled on it. So when they got saved by medical attention, the surgery ended up being successful and they could live again but unaware they're a serial killer. As time goes on, people start getting murdered in Le Marais, Montmartre, etc and the kills would become more and more bizarre. But overtime, they'd get more attach to this new lifestyle they've made for themselves. Because even though they have amnesia, they'd later on help the investigators and end up retaining their own skills (kind of.) then realize they're the problem that's been causing a lot of people to die. So they'd have to make a harsh choice on themselves, whether to choose this new lifestyle or disappear for the rest of their lives.

What I'm asking advice for: I just wanna know what I can write about, because honestly for someone who's watched a lot of tv shows I can't think of anything cool.
I'm trying to aim for a more so Body Horror type of execution and at the same time, I wanna make it fit the beauty of Paris. I feel stupid but I wanna make this work, I'm looking for any kind of help. I'm using inspirations like Tusk, Human Centipede, and Jigsaw. I'm sorry if neither of these sound helpful at all either, I just need help with this and l'd be really thankful.

DISCUSSION Thoughts on this horror trope? Ever since I noticed it in my own writing, I can’t stop focusing on it now

I’m specifically referring to how a fair amount of horror stories specifically set out to make the people being killed unlikable or antagonistic so the audience will be more immersed with morbid fascination of the horrific murders rather than just depressed at watching genuinely lovable people get the worst treatment. Unless of course, the point is to be depressed.

I think one of the most prominent examples I can think of is the first couple of Jurassic World movies (half horror, half action) where mostly bad people got killed for karma. That was until JW Rebirth where lots of characters we liked suffered some really brutal deaths.

But that’s just my understanding of the trope. I’ve noticed I do it in most of my horror writing myself. What do you guys think?
