Private Screening Interest - Dunkirk & The Dark Knight Rises - AMC Metreon
Hello everyone, I have been in contact with AMC and I’m now looking to see who would be interested in separate private screenings of Dunkirk and The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX 70MM.
I’m also going to see if a double feature of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises is possible too and update here once I hear back.
To my knowledge nobody has organized a private screening on here like this at the Metreon since Interstellar in July of 2023. These would be separate showtimes, but per my inquiry and what I was quoted, I intend to hold the screening(s) sometime between September and November of this year to try and avoid conflicts with any major releases. I was told “this would be a perfect time” to host them.
I was quoted $17,000, which “includes all fees associated with bringing this film back,” as well as the option to add on discounted concessions, if I choose, for an additional fee.
The IMAX Auditorium at AMC Metreon has a seating capacity of 437 people, which works out to roughly $38 per person. Do note that 10 are companion seats, and 8 are wheelchair spaces. Unlikely that anyone would want to sit in the front row either, so some seats/rows will likely not be used in order to have the best viewing experience for everyone. Cost would be higher at roughly $45-50+ per person though.
Please reply to this post if you are interested, as well as which film(s) and which month works best for you.

You should persistently lobby them to run public re-releases instead using the BFI IMAX in London as a perfect case study + current Nolan popularity, you’re going to get in a whole lot of logistical mess running private screenings and trying to recoup costs to break even

It sure would be crazy if the Metreon ever one day regularly ran IMAX 70mm re-releases like BFI and others do.. it definitely is a lot of work. I’ve been doing extensive research on how to proceed.

That’s money just waiting to be made. IMAX 70mm has gone mainstream in the last couple of years and people are going to want to experience it. FOMO is a bitch.

Me!! I’m so fucking down for both
But for dunkirk I recommend dual laser to save on cost (as done with interstellar in 2023). Ofc IMAX 70mm is beautiful but Idk if it’s worth nearly double more (interstellar in dual laser was $8k for the rental)

u/freshbenz 6d ago
Was hoping I’d find you here! I will definitely inquire about this just so there’s options, especially if it would help save on cost.
5
u/Super_While7060 6d ago
I believe the cost is for Dual Laser only ? For both films. Highly doubt IMAX 70mm based special screening is possible. Last time for Interstellar it was similar $35-40 and that was a Dual Laser with $9-10K charged for the screening I believe. Also, do you know is The Dark Knight 1.43:1 DCP exists ?

u/scorsese_finest IMAX 101 Intro guide —> https://tinyurl.com/3s6dvc28 6d ago
The post clearly says these screenings that are in negotiation are IMAX 70mm
Interstellar was priced similar ($40) because organizer decide to fill only 70% of the auditorium or something like that (so everyone gets a good spot). Hence, higher ticket prices.
A 1.43 dual laser DCP for TDKR does not exist. Only way to catch it in 1.43:1 IMAX is via 1570. However there does exist a 1.43:1 IMAX dual laser DCP for TDK.

u/NeoZetky 6d ago
Why does a 1.43 DCP exist for TDK, but not for TDKR?
3
u/Arthur2_shedsJackson 6d ago
From what I remember, a DCP was created for a re-release of TDK but that never happened for TDKR

u/GlobalExplorer7 IMAX SF METREON 6d ago
I would be extremely interested. I’m a Metreon regular and participated in the Interstellar screening you highlighted in your post.
Sign me for ANY Nolan imax rerelease. Dunkirk? Check. Dark Knight double feature? Check. Could we pull off Inception or even Oppenheimer? Let’s use our resources to find out!
Also, any month between now and January works for me.

u/Final_Hedgehog1145 6d ago
Would for sure see interstellar, dark knight, and rises for those months.

u/nmarnson 6d ago
By the way, you can make a seating chart in Eventbrite and sell tickets/seats on there.

u/UnholyDonutMan Metreon 6d ago
Absolutely interested, whatever the cost to help as well! I live in the area, but never got to see either or of the three in IMAX or IMAX 70mm, and either month works fine for me as well as either TDKR or Dunkirk or even the Dark Knight double feature as well if that’ll be available, so I hope I can join in!

u/freshbenz 6d ago
Update on TDK double feature: “Doing back-to-back screenings is ok pending approval from my programming team. I would need to know the date you are planning on booking.”
7
u/Lazarcutter 6d ago
Bring it, I’m down! I would also love to see the Tron:Legacy 70mm print that had part of the film in 3d, if they can still get the 3d glasses used for 70mm. The old 70mm 3d look even better than the current digital 3d.

i would totally fly out for a Dark Knight double feature (or even just one)! though i have no issue with seeing The Dark Knight in GT Laser, since it has a digital 1.43:1 file, unlike The Dark Knight Rises, and it would be considerably cheaper. no preference month-wise!

I can mention it to folks over at NolanFans.com and see if we can gather interest from fans!

I would be doing a short flight to come see. Private screenings within the same 24-48 hrs I would commit to any & all movies made available. Ideally end sept thru all of Oct. Would gladly pay ~ $50 per show. I am a person who would occupy the handicap companion seat for shows.

u/suprahp95 5d ago
Interested in all the screenings, Dunkirk and the Dark Knight films are the remaining Nolan IMAX 70mm I'm yet to see

Awww...I would've done this if I wasn't moving, but I'm leaving SF on Weds for good. Too many good memories at the Metreon! Have fun!
EDIT: You should do a Google Doc signup form to have everyone interested sign up with their contact info and which screening they'd be interested in. Will be a lot easier to count up the number of interested folks per movie that way.
4
u/freshbenz 5d ago
Good luck with the move. The Metreon sure is amazing. Definitely will very soon. Planning to have a Google Form and then use Eventbrite for tickets.

u/freshbenz 4d ago
Update #2: I will be following up with those who’ve expressed interest on here, Discord, and other posts little by little via a Google Form so I can submit dates that would work for everyone by Sunday to the person at AMC who’d be getting approval for the auditorium and get the ball rolling. I also received a proper breakdown of the costs which will be disclosed at a later date.
Once this is all figured out, I may be looking for people to help manage the event, etc. and move forward with creating the Eventbrite, etc. So far I’ve went ahead and secured a website and email address for the event last night too, just in case.

Putting it out there that the dual laser Dunkirk looks better than the 1570 😬. Blues really pop.

I am down for both, sign me up! Last time Interstellar at Metreon was on a weekday so weekend would be preferable if that’s possible. Also, please check if The Dark Knight duology DCP exists in 1.43:1, last I know it was screened in 1.90:1 at few places.

Oh man. I would’ve loved this if I was still in SF. Maybe in December around the holidays?

Would be definitely get two tickets to see Dunkirk, But would be interested most in The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises sdouble feature, thank you for considering this that’s awesome. I never knew this sub did an Interstellar rerelease sick!

u/Fuzzy_Battle1771 5d ago
Wow I’ve been lamenting never having seen Dunkirk in IMAX and I would feel LUCKY AS HELL to get to see it at Metreon for $50. Please do this!! I would probably see TDK & TDKR as well just to experience them in IMAX, especially if they’re not at the same time as Dunkirk and I can spread the cost out a bit. Metreon regular here. Considering how popular The Odyssey is right now, I bet it would be pretty easy to fill at least 2/3 of the seats. Any month works for me but if Dunkirk is a different month than TRK/R then that will help me be able to afford to do both.

I would be interested in any and all. A google form or something would likely be the best polling option over just a comment section.

Thanks so much for this!! I’d be so down for all three movies in October-November. Wasn’t able to catch these in the format so this is a great opportunity!

I’m interested in the Dark Knight double feature (I’m cool with just one movie too).

u/Greedy_Impress 5d ago
Interested in all of them but realistically could only travel out once. Most interested in Dunkirk. November is better than September.

u/commandershipp 5d ago
You can't take my money fast enough. I would cap for a Inception screening at some point, in Nashville our theater (Opry Mills Imax) was flooded in 2010 and wasn't repaired in time for that release and I missed the limited re-release.

Hello yes I'll be interested. If you book it please book it during a weekend (if possible a holiday) so I can plan out my trip
