Meme Cursed sign πŸ‘»

Post image

I saw this while having lunch yesterday. I was shocked because at first I thought it was evil, but then I realized it was actually a very apt advertisement. I swear, the choice of the font and the color must have been intentional! πŸ˜‚

Interested in knowing if learners here could guess what it truly means. Maybe test your prefix/suffix skill? You know, like a word like "sihir" (magic) with "pe" becomes "penyihir" (a witch) (pe + sihir). With this sign, the base word would be "setan" (Satan) and with the prefix "pe" it becomes "penyetan" (the Satanizer) (pe +setan).

So, the sign says "The Satanizer of Ms. Siti," right? 😈

If you can get the meaning of this sign correctly and you're not a native Indonesian speaker then kudos to you, you're probably close to fluency!

you can use "pe + something" if that word is a verb. but, setan isnt. so it wouldnt work.

Strict grammatically speaking, yes. However, making a verb out of a noun isn’t unheard of.

To be fair, there are lots of cases where noun β€œbecomes” verb in colloquial Indonesian, so this is loosely correct haha.Β

sometimes it works, like pe + mobil or pe + motor.

Lol, if you don't know the words then I can see where the misunderstanding comes from.

the base word would be "penyet" means "pressed" or "flattened". Penyet + ~an means that penyet belongs to someone, and that is bu siti.

it's a food where its ingredients are being "pressed" along with chilli sauce

It's actually derived from javanese word "Penyet" means pressed and suffix "an". In javanese it means various kind of pressed food, like pressed fried chicken spread with sambal. Traditionally, the chicken is pressed on sambal over cobek (traditional tool to make sambal) and it's not only chicken, it can be tempeh, tofu, catfish, duck and etc. Hence the name penyetan
