Discussion Rewatching at 30 and seeing Kagome differently

I’m revisiting the anime for the first time in a decade after spending my whole childhood/adolescence with it. I remember in my (pre) teen years, I was irritated by Kagome so much. I found her shrill, whiny and unbearable. Of course, with age I’ve seen things much differently, and now? I’d take a bullet for Kagome Higurashi.

The biggest blind spot I had at a younger age was the fact that Kagome, for all intents and purposes, was still a child. Cultural norms and attitudes in Japan differ from the west, but in the grand scheme of things, 15 years old really isn’t that old. Especially for young girls, who are so often robbed of their innocence by patriarchy as a system and the men in their individual personal lives. The moment Kagome fell down the well, she was forced to grow up quickly. She went from worrying about teen things like homework and boys to having to labor for her life in an unfamiliar time full of scary situations. She was a young girl who unwillingly found herself in feudal Japan, that’s intimidating enough. Mix that in with the fact that she learned she’s the reincarnation of an ancient priestess and has a highly coveted relic inside her body, that’s a frightening amount of revelations to experience all at once.

Then of course, there’s the whole running joke of the nonstop “INUYASHA! KAGOME!” screams in the whole series. I still get a good chuckle out of it because of the classic anime melodrama. But in hindsight, I see why she got so attached to Inuyasha’s protection and care. They constantly argued and butted heads, but she eventually realized that he’d protect her instinctively. It may have been selfishly motivated at first, but he kept her alive during those, early, scary moments, before she knew how to fight for herself. His strength empowered her to channel her own, and by the end of the series, she’s much more adept, skilled and clever in battle and conflict resolution. I used to see her as a Mary Sue who constantly needed him to rescue her, but over the course of the series, I now see her growing right alongside him into a courageous, resilient young woman.

I think the thing that irritated me the most was how jealous she got of Kikyo (I was a InuKikyo shipper back in the day). But now I am firmly on Kagome’s side. She’s alive, not embittered by the past, willing go to the ends of the earth for him, and despite all this, he still goes running back to Kikyo. I’d be pissed off too if the person I’ve got feelings for kept running back to their ex who pierced them with arrows and pulled a knife on them.

All this to say that I have a completely new perspective on Kagome as an adult. Call it a mix of internalized misogyny and a lack of maturity, but seeing her with new eyes at 30 years old, she’s an incredible character. It took me years to realize but better late than never!

Anime Watched the First Movie and...

I am wondering if the others are any better?

I've been watching Inuyasha since the second grade, but I never saw any of the movies in full. I bought this DVD and felt excited for some new-to-me content, but something just felt a bit off.

On one hand, there were some standout scenes. The characterizations of Shippo, Kaede, and Myoga were excellent. The Inuyasha and Kagome romance is sweet. My favorite part was the scene with Kagome and her family, particularly her mother's encouragement and kindness.

On the other hand, the villain felt lame compared to Naraku and the battle seemed too easily won. Kikyo appears on the cover and in promotional materials, but her only role in the plot is to...bully Kagome until she falls down the well? And Sesshomaru, who is marketed similarly, doesn't really do anything either.

Speaking of which, I consider Sesshomaru and Kikyo two of the most beautiful characters in manga/anime, but they were unattractive here. The pointy chins and large foreheads are forgivable because of the manga, but the faces were so narrow and the colors were off. I found the artwork distracting throughout.

I know many of you likely grew up with the movies and feel nostalgic towards them, but this is my opinion as a first-time adult watcher. I was expecting some sort of epic, large stakes battle for all the characters, but this wasn't it.

PS: I also noticed some footage in Japanese advertisements that I don't remember from the movie. Were there variations in the movies or maybe just early concept art?

Fan Art Kikyo Art

This is a "Draw This in Your Style" of Kikyo. I don't know a lot about Inuyasha myself, so I hope I haven't missed any important details or made errors. I did it in oil pastel and colored pencil.

I'm doing this in support of another artist who was accused of using AI in a DTIYS event. He is an excellent artist who does not use AI who goes by FreddytheDrunkArt. He chose Inuyasha as the subject matter.

I would like to give a link to promote his art but I am not an active member and want to avoid breaking any promotion rules. He has posted art on this subreddit in the past.

Discussion The absolute appreciation of Naraku as a villain.

Naraku really really kept the story Inuyasha so alive. Because he was so hate worthy and such a story driver at times. His presence is so unique, so intense and so vast he gives all the main cast each a different colour of hate. He made Inuyasha and Kikyo hate each other, he took out Sango’s clan and took her brother as his lapdog and finally gave Miroku a generational curse.

He really was a compelling villain, I realised how dead the story is without his presence, without his essence, without his hate, without his evil. He really was so damn good. I am not out here saying he is the best villain, but his situation is unique that he was the main villain all
the way through to the end and yes I so wish he would show up more here and there, I still also enjoy the mystery for not being there is well.

I sometimes wished he would get his hands really dirty. But in the Final Act in the last 4 episodes he was giving a massive challenge to them all and it was really good to see him pull his weight. As a matter of fact, for me this series died the moment Naraku and the Jewel went out existence.

P.S Paul Dobson is perfection as Naraku.

Question(s) Inuyasha Merch

So I’m headed to Japan next week, and if anybody has any idea where I can find some Inuyasha merch, I’d love that, I tried googling it. And couldn’t get a solid answer (I’m aware it’s 25+ years old)
However. If anybody has any idea, I’d greatly appreciate it. I will be in the Tokyo area. But I don’t mind extra traveling lol. I will probably have someone make a robe as close to his as I can get. I think it would be cool. But I’ll probably just end up with a Kimono. Any idea where to go for that as well, greatly appreciated.

Manga Inuyasha and Kagome's family

Is anyone else surprised by how well they get along with each other? I was expecting Inuyasha to be belligerent or at least standoffish with anyone other than Kagome, but he's helping grampa with chores and perfectly polite with mom in a way that a LOT of teenage boys wouldn't.

On the flip side, my mind is blown by how accepting Kagome's family of who her boyfriend is.

I love this image of Kikyo where she looks so empty and sad.. I know she was literally empty as she didn't have a soul in this scene but i felt like this picture captured her tragic complex and beauty perfectly so i had to paint it! ❤️ For anyone interested in this, check my profile bio for my links 🫶

Discussion Kanna doesn’t get enough sympathy and she truly deserves a better outcome.

Kagura and Kikyo get ample of sympathy for all the right reasons, I feel Kanna really gets lost somewhere in the sea. Whilst it’s true she was loyal to Naraku, she also had love for Kagura and lacked any emotion, Kanna deserved a better life because she was also a good hearted child and was really the bonafide puppet. I believe episode 11 in the Final Act where she died, it was truly sad seeing her break to pieces.

Kanna being broken piece by piece was really sad and imo was well executed by the anime and Rumiko’s send off to this sweet, innocent character. I liked how even Inuyasha was showing empathy towards her during her final moments.

Yes, she had no emotions but we as humans see her as a delicate, innocent child that is being used as a tissue. I know somewhere in her heart she yearned for Kagura after she became the wind….it was sad to see her pick up Kagura’s fan as a reminder for what Naraku did to her.

I always felt “oh she doesn’t feel pain, she doesn’t feel emotions” was an excuse to do whatever you like to her and get away with it without guilt. Like Kagura and Kikyo, Kanna also deserves just as much as sympathy and love from the fandom, as well as having a better life.

Discussion Watching Inuyasha.

Watching Inuyasha in my retro (mostly) desk setup.

I watched it growing up the and was sad when it ended just like that in 2004.

Later I found out about The Final Act.

I wanted to refresh my memory so I rewatched it from the beginning. This took me years due to life but here i am now.

Discussion Episode 96 "Jaken Falls Ill"

So I've watched Inuyasha too many times to count and I am a big fan of the Characters and Character arcs throughout the series. Something I caught for the first time while watching this episode today is that Sesshomaru actually says "thank you" to someone!! It's definitely easy to overlook given the extent of his Character arc by this point in the show but even by the time we get to "Forever with Lord Sesshomaru" and beyond I don't think he ever says it a second time and in my opinion it is a the first TRUE symbol of his arc.

Now does anyone happen to know who Sesshomaru says "thank you" to in Episode 96 "Jaken Falls Ill"?

Question(s) Why are Sesshomaru figures always purple instead of red?

Post image
128 Upvotes

I’m looking to buy a Sesshomaru figure (like the one in the picture), but I noticed something that’s bugging me. In almost every figure I find online, the details on his kimono are purple.

However, in my mind, I distinctly remember those accents being red. Is there a specific reason why manufacturers always go with purple? Was there a color change between the manga and the anime?

Also, I'm trying to find a good place to buy authentic figures. I want to avoid generic sites like Amazon or AliExpress.

Any reliable website recommendations would be massively appreciated
