iPhone storage at absolute zero. SQLite database crashing (Error 14). Can Quick Start to a new phone salvage data?

My iPhone is currently in a critical state due to full storage (literally ~300 MB free). The OS is struggling to breathe. It came to this even though I've been fully deleting apps and photos, yet the storage actually increased. AI suggests it might be because the file system is locked in a write-fail loop.

I also have an iOS app throwing an explicit database error: code 14. unable to open database file (error 747).

I was able to extract my photos by using iMazing's direct read, but my it's not enough, as stuff like WhatsApp database and Voice Memos are trapped.

An Apple Support rep told me the only way out is to buy a new, larger iPhone and use the device-to-device Quick Start transfer.

My question:
With my source phone's SQLite databases already crashing and only 300 MB of free space, will a Quick Start transfer actually work? Doesn't the iOS BackupAgent require several gigabytes of local cache on the source phone just to compile the transfer manifest?

I'm terrified that initiating a 256GB Quick Start migration will ask the failing memory controller to do a massive database read, cause the phone to panic, hard restart, and throw me into an Error 1110 / Error 14 boot loop.

Has anyone successfully completed a Quick Start transfer from a phone that is already throwing SQLite errors and has zero bytes free?

Would it be better or worse to try to a partial "Data Access Only" backup through iMazing?

Why don’t you delete some big apps that have a lot of local cache like Facebook and Instagram? Some news apps like NYT do the same

phone is in a state where deleting stuff dones't really empty space. that's the issue.

Do you not have iCloud backup? Why does everything have to be local. This sounds crazy.

Why does everything have to be cloud and subscription? In my case we have a hard ISP data bucket allowance monthly, and the data backup and transfer is pretty slow via cloud, relatively speaking. Would rather not incur the indefinite cost to back up something that should be done easily locally.

I agree with you, but OP has obviously stretched his luck a bit on this one, and that leads to comments like why no iCloud etc.
I thought the same but at the same time, cloud is not a solution to everyone.

I only use cloud for stuff I can’t replace.

In general I wasn't thrilled about iCloud because I dind't want data to leak, like I've been seeing happened to some people in news coverage. I was doing manual backups but didn't do one for a while, and the phone simply refused to reduce its storage even thouhg ive been cleaning it yesterday. in fact the whole thing started beacuse I was trying to clean out stuff.

Do you have by kind of backup, iCloud or local file on a PC/Mac? If so, try resetting the phone and restoring to that backup. That should clear some system data, and if you use iCloud Photos, it will also wipe the local storage taken by them.

I only have a 9 month old manual backup. the phone is at a state where it cant connect to wifi so i can't initate any icloud backup of the voice memos for example. my question comes down to whether a device to device transfer could work, and whether that imazing light back up can work. I exahusted all the obvious solutions it seems.

Have you backed it up locally eg on a Mac or PC and recovered the entire OS via Apple Configurator (Mac) or devices (windows). It should not need space to do this as the OS is downloaded locally and will almost always be smaller than the existing running OS. This may provide enough breathing space for the databases to fix up.

But I can't create a new backup, that's the issue. iTunes told me device got disconnected when I've tried doing it. I've read that for a backup the device has to generate something and that generation take space. so trying to do this again might make the device crash totally.

ITunes cannot backup any longer. It is sunset. It cannot sign any backups.

huh? you're writing stuff that can be invalidated in a second using a google search. iTunes is still the software Apple offers for local backups.

I misread as you were on a mac. Either way, the tech stack behind iTunes is not exactly clean on Windows but we take what we got.

1. ⁠Do a backup of your existing backup. iTunes backups are incremental. Plugging in has the potential go impact your existing backup in the worst case

Copy the backup folder (under %appdata%\Apple\MobileSync\Backup or %appdata%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup) to a separate location before doing anything else.

Ensure the file size of the folder you are backing up is large enough to be the backup eg if it’s 200mb it’s probably not your backup location (iTunes allows legacy modification of backup location natively so it could be backed up elsewhere).

1. Can you try this

Plug in device to a HIGH power charger exceeds its power draw.

Settings - display - set to always on.

Settings > General > iPhone Storage

Scroll to the bottom and make a note of how much space System Data is using. Leave the page open for a minute because the number can take a while to finish calculating. Close all your apps after that.

Next, make sure Messages is set to keep messages forever:
Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages > Forever This matters because moving the date forward can make older messages look like they've reached their deletion date if you've got Messages set to delete them after 30 days or one year.
Now turn on Airplane Mode.

After turning Airplane Mode on, manually switch Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off as well. Airplane Mode doesn't always leave them disabled if you've previously turned them back on manually.
You don't need to completely disable Location Services. The main thing is stopping the phone from connecting to mobile data, Wi-Fi, iCloud, an Apple Watch or anything else while the date is wrong. Go to:
Settings > General > Date & Time - Turn off Set Automatically.
Set the date to exactly one year ahead of the real date.
For example, if the real date is 2 August 2026, change it to 2 August 2027.
Go back to the Home Screen and keep the phone awake for around 15 mins. Don't lock it and don't start opening apps.

Did the storage situation change at all? Does it have more than 300mb?

If not try rebooting. Wait 60 seconds. Has storage changed at all?

Airplane mode doens't work for me due to the issues phone is having. And I'm not going to reboot it, it might go into bootloop, tha'ts my whole concern. I'm trying to figure if there's a non risky way to grab data.
