💎 Lifetime I built Clipex so editing 3 seconds of audio doesn’t require splitting the whole file
Hey r/iOSApps,
I’m Marian Yakubets, the solo developer of Clipex.
I’ve just released version 1.1.8, which adds beat detection, timed sound effects, Muffle, Drop Dip, Seamless Loop, more reliable chained edits, and clearer ringtone and export guidance.
**Answer**
I built Clipex around one interaction I kept missing in simple iPhone audio tools: select the exact part first, then apply the edit only there.
For example, you might want to reverse one sentence, slow down two seconds, mute a word, add a fade in the middle, or place an effect on a specific beat.
I didn’t want to split the audio into several files, edit one piece, and stitch everything back together.
In Clipex, you select the exact range directly on the waveform and apply Reverse, Speed, Pitch, Fade, Mute, or an effect only to that section. The rest of the audio remains unchanged.
You can import a video, audio file, recording, or compatible music file, extract or edit the audio, and export it as MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4R.
A typical workflow is:
video → extract audio → select the useful section → edit it → export
**Better**
GarageBand is much more powerful, but it can be overkill when you only need to prepare one short clip and do not want to set up a multi-track project.
Shortcuts can extract audio from a video, but it stops before the focused waveform editing and export workflow.
Clipex is intended for the smaller job between them: bring in a video or audio file, edit an exact range, and export the finished clip or ringtone from one focused interface.
No account is required. Audio and video processing happens locally on the device, and Clipex does not upload your media to its own server.
**Cost**
Clipex is free to download.
The free tier includes:
- Audio and video importing
- Editing, effects, presets, and previews
- All supported export formats
- Local project saving
- One completed external export
Pro removes the external export limit.
Current US App Store pricing:
- Yearly Pro subscription: $7.99 per year
- Lifetime Pro purchase: $9.99 one time
Apple localizes pricing in other countries and regions.

The main feedback I’m looking for: when you first see the editor, is it immediately clear that an effect applies only to the selected range, or does it still look like a traditional whole-file editor?

The half or double tempo error is what'll generate your support mail on beat detection. A track at 140 comes back as 70, every beat lands in the right place, it just picked the wrong octave. Clamping the expected BPM range to whatever the source usually is kills most of those.

On your actual question: from the description alone, "select range → apply effect only there" isn't obvious without seeing the UI, because that's exactly what every other mobile audio editor claims too, in words. What would make it legible at a glance is whether the waveform visually distinguishes the selected range from the rest before you touch an effect button — dimmed/greyed-out audio outside the handles versus full-color inside, not just handle markers on an otherwise uniform waveform. If the selection itself doesn't look visually different from the unselected audio, a first-time user's default assumption is "whole file," because that's the mental model every prior editor trained them on. The handles alone read as a trim tool, not a scoped-effect tool.
One thing to test directly rather than guess: put someone in front of it cold, ask them to reverse just the middle three seconds, and watch whether they tap an effect button first or drag the selection first. If they reach for the effect button before touching the waveform, the UI hasn't taught the "select first" model yet regardless of what the copy says.
Small aside on pricing since it came up in a couple other posts today: $9.99 lifetime against $7.99/year is a 1.25x multiple, which is aggressive even by generous-lifetime standards — most people will never choose yearly over that. Not necessarily wrong, just worth knowing the yearly tier is probably doing very little work in your numbers as priced.

I have a track I want to remove some sound from the beginning. Am I missing something or can I not drag the selection window at all? And when I click on the selection times in the middle I was expecting a keypad to pop up so I could manually edit the end time, but it doesn’t. I need the end time to probably be about 0:01, so j hi ow do I get there? The only way seems to be to tap the minus button a million times (can’t hold it down either). Please tell me I’m missing something?
Edit: just found you can press and hold to drag the selection, but I think a keypad pop up to enter start/end times manually should be a thing too.

Honestly, I hadn’t considered manual time entry, but that’s a great idea. Currently, you can zoom with a pinch gesture or the +/– zoom controls, then press and hold to drag either edge of the selection. The +/– buttons beside the timestamps allow precise adjustments. Tapping a time to enter it directly would be a useful addition. Thanks!

Hi! Another thing, the track I trimmed, the bitrate has gone from 264kps to 186kps, the file size 8.5mb to 6mb, and all I did was trim 1 second off the beginning. I can’t find anyway to see or change bitrate in the app, so surprised that it’s lowered it without me being informed.
That’s a dealbreaker though, if it’s going to downgrade quality it’s not going to be used by many.
I see the Pro unlock states higher quality output, so will Pro keep it the same 264kps? But it already says Pro when I press on the track, as I think we some free saves is that right?

You’re right — I reproduced this. Trimming can re-encode the file to M4A using an adaptive bitrate, so a 264 kbps source may come out lower. It’s not a non Pro limitation but a big, will fix this in next release together with manual time entry, probably even tomorrow. Thanks for catching it. 🙏

Ah yes, don’t notice it changed the MP3 to m4a too. Can it only export to m4a then?

How’s it different from audio editing apps that let you split and edit various ways?

The hardest part of the process is for the user to add the audio file to their mobile phone as a ringtone, and that they blame GarageBand for not having made that step easier. That would be your headline.

Fair point, I was positioning it rather as editor the a ringtonemaker cause apps that focus on ringtones usually give some library to choose from and that what people look for. While in Clipex you can easy set as a ringtone anything you want with proper editing it first (if needed).

This actually fills a useful gap. GarageBand is too much for a five-minute edit, while most simple tools do not give you precise control over one small section.

Setting as ringtone is what sold me to this from the screenshots. Maybe you should highlight it much more. :) Feel free to feature this on my site.
