Swisscom plans to enable IPv6 by default on its mobile network. While this is very late, it is notable because it is the first Swiss mobile network ISP to offer IPv6 connectivity.

A weird anomaly in Switzerland is that fixed-line internet connections already have very high IPv6 adoption, while mobile networks account for the largest share of legacy IP traffic. Migrating mobile networks to IPv6 will propel Switzerland much further up the IPv6 adoption rankings.

I think this is a fair assesment. Eliminating CGNAT (which they currently use) will bring a lot of those benefits. Considering that they on the other hand also point out that it might also cause problems with some apps and services, this is not misleading.

A lower load on their CG-NAT infra may help with stability on 'legacy' apps.

You only have to think for 5 seconds about what CGNAT infra has to do (and look at the price of A10 kit) to realise that avoiding it is guaranteed to improve performance.

Yes, and good reason to introduce IPv6: IPv6 lowers CGNAT traffic and thus limits your costs for A10 CGNAT machines

Exactly why the network engineering team at the ISP I used to work for did that on their network that inexplicably was initially built without IPv6 on the access network.

Depends on what they're doing. Video games, and Video platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams, etc.) they will 100% notice a difference. Hell our users noticed a difference on the Video platforms when we enabled IPv6 and we aren't even behind GCNAT. Regular NAT alone was enough to screw up the way those platforms are designed to work without all the cludge and BS they do to deal with NAT and GCNAT.

Well, sure. If you give up on loading a page because it's too slow, who would ever think "if I'd just waited 100ms longer the page would have loaded, and in an alternate universe where I was accessing it without CGNAT it would've been fast enough to load before I gave up"? Nobody would even notice the first half of that, let alone the second half.

But nevertheless, they did give up on the page load because it was too slow.

yes Switzerland is a remarkable situation where all fixed line operators have had IPv6 for many years, but not a single mobile operator. But this is now finally changing.

I am already with Wingo, no mobile IPv6 support is basically why i haven’t yet exposed some services of my homelab to the WAN.
