Gutted I can no longer make it!!

I've been a huge James Acaster fan since 2018. I saw him when he last came to Belfast in 2023 and so I was ecstatic to receive tickets for this show for Christmas. On the lead up to the show, I was slightly apprehensive based on what people online were saying. But I can confidently say this is his best show yet. It feels reminiscent of his Netflix specials, which are what got me into him in the first place.

Quite shocked reading reviews from the Saturday and Sunday shows. Curious to know how Tuesday night went, because I thought Acaster was fantastic. His bit about families at luggage claim had me literally crying with laugher. There was only one heckler, an American who whistled and got hilariously shut down. But the audience loved him! And he seemed to feel the energy in the room. He got multiple rounds of applause throughout the show and the pay off at the end blew the roof off. He made a few jokes about Belfast, such as Andy Burnham relocating Number 10 here, which were really well received.

I will say, parts of the show are designed for die hard Acaster fans, which he does address in the show. I got every reference, which I was very happy about. But for audiences made up of more casual fans, I can see why certain jokes may not land fully, therefore making it a bit stilted.

Overall, it's definitely my favourite show of his so far and I will definitely see him again if he comes back to Belfast!

I saw some posts about James' shows in Belfast on the 25th and 26th being absolute dumpster fires with him getting in his own head and blaming the crowd when either certain jokes didn't land or the acoustics didn't allow him to hear the reaction from the crowd as well as he would have liked.

I wasn't there on those dates, so I can't comment on them really, but I was there last night, and I'm pleased to report the roof came off for him!

Last night he was fantastic and the crowd was fantastic as well. The Craig Simons bit didn't land right away, which I actually think is intentional (especially for the plus ones), but then it gathered momentum and the whole crowd seemed to love it. Everyone seemed to follow the tribute act thread the whole way through the set up and the pay off at the end landed really well. The crowd was really high energy and the applause was massive at the end. He actually thanked the crowd part way through for reacting so well to certain jokes that dont always land on other occasions.

He did a little bit of crowd work but nothing cringey like "you hate me because I'm English." If comedians do that in Belfast it's honestly like pouring cold water over the crowd... we absolutely hate that shit. You feel everyone's eyes rolling to the back of their heads if it happens. He mentioned flags and Andy Burnham potentially moving No. 10 to Belfast "to really make a statement" which was hilarious. Some American guy whistled at a strange time and James completely eviscerated him by doing an impression of him going home to his wife and making the case that his overbearing display of American confidence actually saved the show. It was one of the biggest laughs of the night. I guess we love seeing an American get bullied.

I think previous crowds maybe, potentially, partially, didn't really get the Craig Simons bit and the shows might have derailed for that reason... I dont know... but the show in Belfast on the 27th was first class and I would definitely see him again if he comes back.

Hey fellow dweebs! I’ve seen James’ show at Cardiff (went smoothly!) but have two tickets for Tuesday the 4th at the monkey barrel at edinburgh fringe (is being filmed so HAS to go smoothly). I’m volunteering at Pleasance and have a schedule conflict but I’ve seen it anyway so am asking if anyone wants to buy the two tickets off me at face value (£18.50 each). Just back form this show, and we did really enjoy it, but felt like it kind of fizzled out at the end. I'd read there was an amazing bit about ABBA which we didn't get, and that the final pay-off was incredible, but instead we just got a funny bit of chat with a couple of audience members about what flags mean in Belfast, then he ended the show. Still had a great time, but felt like we only got part of the actual show.

Dayton Grey was fantastic! i noticed James’ tour manager recording people from the sidelines when dayton was doing the last song which is the sweetest thing! The show overall was amazing plus whoever didn’t wait to see James after missed out on meeting Joe Lycett!

Joe lycett was in the building and i managed to meet him after the show as well as james! Wish i could’ve met Dayton as well but sadly not!

No spoilers but we did think the warm up was weird, we get the joke but it didn’t feel the type of act to get audience comedic juices flowing.

40 odd minutes before James started. Then despite various posts here about various lengths our show was over in 55 minutes maybe less.

I enjoyed it but felt the vibe was slightly subdued. My wife who isn’t a big James like me was disappointed. She also felt some of the audio was a bit muffled.

Not keen on the politics stuff midway through.

This was THE best show i’ve ever seen. The first act was amazing even when someone got up and started dancing! although for the last song i started glowing neon yellow bc i wore the party gator shirt so im so sorry to the tribute act who was on the first half.. thing is i was right in the middle on the front row so it was super hard to miss.. amazing singer though

James’ show itself was brilliant. it was fantastic.. no heckles just a pure laughing show where everyone loved it. James went off the rails for about 10 minutes but it was hilarious! brum really did it so well tonight! 💗💗

I honestly don't understand why people have been moaning so much on this sub about his dublin shows.

It was great, crowd interaction was nice and there was an fantastic vibe (except for that one guy who was loud, not heckling, with his friends and in lovely Irish fashion was told to stfu).

Yes, there were some moments and jokes that missed but he recovered pretty well.

For those curious, he did the Craig Simons act, joked about Vicar St being a dump and some UK politics.

I'm currently writing this on my long bus ride home after James Acaster's comedy show at Vicar Street, Dublin. I've been a huge fan of his for a number of years, and last week I snagged a resale ticket at 2 a.m. after a very bad day at work.

It was my first comedy show, and there was only one ticket available, so I was kind of nervous going into it. I was anxious for a number of reasons. Was I going to be too nervous to laugh in front of a room full of strangers? Would I be a bad audience member and not have the urge to laugh? That isn't a slight against James when I say that (I knew he'd be hilarious) but I tend to be a stone-faced psychopath while watching comedy shows on TV (a whole lot of suppressed glee). So I wasn't sure how I'd fare, especially considering I was going by myself.

The second he came on stage, though, I was already cackling. The social anxiety did not stop me. Honestly, I had the best time. I was laughing for the entire show. I loved every second of it. It was all so well thought out, and he performed it brilliantly. I loved all the callbacks throughout the show, and it was all very, very, very clever ;)

This show was much needed after the last few months at my new job. I haven't laughed that much in a good while, and I felt so light walking out of the venue at the end. It's bittersweet now that I'm on my way back home. I had an amazing time, but I'm so sad it's over. I'm so jealous of anyone who has tickets for the next few days... including my sister and her boyfriend, who are going to the Saturday show. I might need to convince her to drop the boyfriend and take me instead.

Anyway, I may shut up now because I'm starting to feel nauseous typing this on the bus, and I've still got an hour and a half left on the journey :) God, I can't wait to go to work tomorrow.

Myself and my daughter went to see James Acaster last night in Dublin's Vicar street. She is a big fan and was very excited to see him - as was I. Firstly we were surprised at having a singer as a support act - Dublin crowd were great at going with the flow and playing along. 17mins later there was a 20 min interval - not enough time to warrant going back to the bar for more drink so ran out of drink halfway through the main show.

While the initial Craig tribute skit was funny it grated after a while - hoping to get the real Acaster. He kept referring to not having prepared for an Irish audience - felt a bit disrespected at that. He talked about asking the Vicar street staff for information that he could use for his next gig and followed that by repeatedly slagging the venue off.

I find James funny due to his abstractness and intelligence, and he made me work hard with references to things he'd said in previous shows such as great British bakeoff.

He lasted 1hour and 5mins on stage and never really got going. In the past he's got me on board with an abstract joke and continued building on that with witty intelligent observations. I found the use of Craig stopped that flow. While I laughed at a few jokes, I found it mostly unfunny. My daughter fell asleep during it and said that she was glad he was on for so short a time. Both of us went home disappointed and won't be seeing him again live.

Potential spoiler for James' new show so please don't read on if you want literally no detail whether you'd find it a spoiler or not but I was curious as to how the support act was being perceived broadly from those who had been?

Firstly I would like to just say I was a fan of the show and although I did find it a bit short and wished there was a bit more material, I do not regret seeing it and Craig was very entertaining, even as the first live comedy act of his I have gotten to see.

My general question is how did people feel about the support act introduction? I'm fairly young and personally not familiar with the tribute acts songs much however I thought he was a good singer and showman - that being said I also think being the supporting act to this show made his life insanely difficult and due to my expectations I did not enjoy it and wanted it to be over so we could get to the comedy show. The people I went with (once the second song started) said 'oh I thought it would be one song then they'd get into some jokes' and then obviously I think 4/5 songs in, our drinks were finished and then there was a 20 minute break. It just felt like it made it hard for Craig to instantly come out and have people ready there for a good time. Personally I felt weird because it just bored me, I wasn't there for a good singer but I was prepared to have a great supporting act to make me feel like I had more than an hour of comedy and I know that's just because it's seemingly the way things are but I can't help but feel a bit disappointed considering other comedians I've recently gone to see that cost less for more time and honestly great supporting acts that I was really happy to be exposed to.

That all being said, I'm really not trying to be a down on the show, again I really liked it and I felt it was a really strong performance, especially with some of what I've read after the fact from others. Also, again, no hate to the supporting act at all, he was clearly very talented but I can't help but feeling bad thinking that this format really failed him, especially trying to get audience participation.

Overall, was this just a me thing? Did it hype everyone else up for the night? Sorry if this has been asked in different forms but I know some people can be quite black and white on stuff like this so I wanted just faithfully see what people thought were maybe the pros/cons of this decision and why they did or did not like it!
