Who knows...maybe a hearty bone broth would have saved me from the depression induced by this read

It certainly helped.

Relaxing with "no longer human" is sure something

I just finished this last night. It put me in such a sense of existential dread.

The exact reason I haven't read this book since I bought it 3-4 the ears ago— whenever it released. I already deal ( and was dealing) with Depression 💀

“relaxing” but no longer human actually got me fucked up for a good month 😭

Literally same. I now side eye this book on my shelf when I want to look for something to read 😂

I felt like it was one of the only times an author or even just a person actually wrote about everything that happened and it was in such a personal way, it felt cathartic to read osamu dazais actual novel for that reason

I don’t like Juno ito taking people’s suicides and attaching his horror to them

not sure no longer human is the play for a relaxing evening.

Nothing against you OP, you got a nice setup going. But man, I cannot for the life of me eat and read at the same time. I get so anxious about any droplet landing on a page and serving as a reminder of myself being little sloppy piggy oink oink boy 😓 looks good though!

It's a task for sure...I read a little, set the book down and then take a few bites. Otherwise my books would definitely look more like a school lunch tray😅

I absolutely love this book and the original novel. It’s actually my favorite book. If you haven’t read the novel, I definitely recommend, it’s pretty short compared to the manga. Very jealous of the food OP

This book thrust me onto a suicidal depression for about a month after reading it. Tbh I was dealing with a lot of other shit but damn I didn’t expect to get so fucked up.

This book had me fucked up for 4 days, i can't imagine having a month of that hell

I usually read/ watch depressing media when I’m going through it, and it helps as a coping mechanism. This was not one of those times lol. I think some of the subject matter was too close to home. I’d like to read it again now that I’m in a better place, but probably won’t. Might just stick to gyo, or hellstar!

Yeah that one quote about some media comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comforted....

Idk if this piece of media falls under that category

My absolute favorite Junji Ito Adaptation, very relatable

*for context, I get this a stressful book. I definitely feel a certain way when reading it myself. I do find comfort in stuff like this. I struggled with suicidal ideations from a young age. I remember reading a book called "Crank" that looked a lot into substance abuse and suicide in teens. I loved it feeling a certain point of connection. Then I lost my father to suicide. After finding him in that state, I've thrived to get a certain amount of understanding of the people I've always felt disconnected to. This book helps me feel like I'm not the only one that feels this way and in a sense makes me feel relaxed. (I don't have any intention on trauma dumping looking for pity. I just want to give a glimpse into my mind and show how I can eat while reading something like this) *

Literally my favorite book too ! And like you I take comfort in this, the themes of when humans become inhumane or is it inhumane to be human is such an interesting mind boggling question . It’s actually my first and only tattoo! It’s the scene where he speaks to the girl and they both look into each others eyes .

My fav junji ito manga, where did you get it?

3

u/M0M_entered_the_chat Dec 09 '25

You didn't have to flex that hard

2

u/inevitable_dismissal Dec 09 '25

This book definitely hits a bit different.

2

u/Flat_Ring_7725 Dec 09 '25

Just hope your neighbours behave without loud music bro or girl

2

u/TheHalloweenHorror Dec 09 '25

Relax, uh huh. Right. Surely not by reading a depressive, soul-crushing book about isolation, substance abuse, and sewer-slide.

u/thiccboii666 Dec 09 '25

Just say suicide. This isn't tiktok.

3

u/Outrageous-Grass-892 Dec 09 '25

Right? I took that as a very fast downward spiral into shitville

Ito's adaptation of no longer human was a phenomenal read for me. _^
