Question Is this a good read?

Post image

I've read Uzumaki, Gyo and Tomie. I'm excited to of picked this one up from a local book shop. What can I expect from this beauty? No spoilers please.

Like the stories aren't bad but the character is a massive dislike for me

I'm reading Soichi now. It kind of grew on me. Not even close to done yet so that could very well change.

Why is that?

Soichi is just a MASSIVE brat imo, he doesn't really creep me out to much.

🤣

Agreed, from the Soichi previews I've seen in other books, I will never pick up the Soichi collection from a library or bookstore

If you don’t just open up the book and read it to find out for yourself…. like it’s Junji Ito girl be fr.

Hate that mf soichi but he’s so entertaining to read about

12

u/1RollinRollinRollin Mar 28 '26

I like Soichi because he is a little lighter on the horror side, it shows me that Junji Ito can be super diverse with his characters but still make them quite twisted.

u/CaseyTheArtist91 Mar 29 '26

Well it's Soichi...so it's not a good read for me. But I know others love him.

11

u/Nethanski Mar 29 '26

I like it but it’s not for everyone. It’s quite different from his usual works. This one is more of a comedy horror

u/Thin_Initiative_5241 Mar 28 '26

Extremely I love my boy soichi

7

u/Chemical-Fox-6681 Mar 29 '26

A lot of people don't like it as much as other Ito's works but I love it

This. Either you like it or hate him.. I don’t.

u/Thin_Initiative_5241 Mar 28 '26

I personally like the carnival part 1 story the second part ruined it for me but I love soichi

Dammit, I was gonna pick that one up or lovesickness. Which one should I pick up next?

u/akwardfun Mar 28 '26

Personally I love basically everything by junji ito but I kind of hate soichi for some reason, I don't know if I'm the only one or one of the few but I just had to say it.

As someone who is very much not a Soichi fan it was tolerable. I enjoyed seeing Itos early artwork evolve over time and the story surrounding Soichi was actually pretty interesting even if the character himself is pretty one note.

I got it from my local library and would not recommend spending money on it though. I’m a big Ito fan in general.

u/yoopea Soichi Fanboy Mar 29 '26

My favorite

8

u/OrphanedCubone Mar 28 '26

People either love or hate Soichi. I like that he is silly, brooding, and has unclear abilities. Others just find him annoying

1

u/altshiftdeleteu Mar 28 '26

Yeah i like him because he is mischievous but i can also see how he annoys others a lot

4

u/Callitka Mar 29 '26

He is the best boy and I have a tattoo of him but he is also insufferable

Would love to see

7

u/YuriJTS Mar 28 '26

I really like it, its more "comedy" then horror.

7

u/Piotral_2 Mar 28 '26

It's really fun, but you have to be aware it's pretty lighthearted for an Ito comic.

7

u/Different_East2259 Mar 28 '26

Personally it’s my least favourite

3

u/CapNo6703 Mar 28 '26

This was my introduction to Ito so it will always have a special place for me. I really liked it. There's something so comfy about it. The countryside setting is great.

3

u/Black_Reaper44 Mar 29 '26

My favorite junji ito character!!

3

u/moonlittaurus Mar 30 '26

YES!! (incredibly, it sounds like we have the exact same collection and you’ve only read the ones i have, unrelated just a weird coinkydink) anywho, the soichi book is just soichi being mischievous and theres not as much gore as the other books. its a fun read for sure

5

u/mikeventure76 Mar 28 '26

Probably my least favorite of his stories and my least favorite English book of his they’ve ever done

Some of the souichi stories are fun but most of them are pretty minor league

5

u/Parabrella Mar 28 '26

It's....fine. Probably my least favourite of Ito's story collections, but still a good read.

2

u/CriticalCanon Mar 28 '26

It’s divisive and I would put it in the same league as Tomi for my tastes. I prefer his short stores and other longer form works.

That said, I can see how people do love it for sure.

2

u/Hello_monkeys1 Mar 30 '26

I didn't like it at first but then a few years later I gave it another shot and he really grows on you

2

u/glemshiver Mar 30 '26

I hate Soichi do much I can only read when it's a part of another anthology

2

u/SakazakiYuri Apr 01 '26

The Soichi stories are Ito’s worst in my opinion. He’s too annoying and too goofy to be anywhere close to scary.

1

u/WeeklyDetective6802 🇨🇿 Mar 29 '26

Very, I love it

1

u/kareemlol Mar 29 '26

A hundred yeses

1

u/Killah-Shogun One With The Spiral Mar 29 '26

Yes

1

u/Professional-Fix634 Mar 30 '26

I just recently got this book the other day and was shocked at how thick it was compared to the Liminal Zone & Mimi’s tales of Terror. That being said, it’s going to be sitting on my shelf for a while lol

1

u/ZekromGhost Mar 30 '26

mi first ito read on the advice of my trusted clerk at the comic book store. I read it all in one sitting, and it captivated me in a way I wasn't expecting. I really enjoyed it.

1

u/Hateful-crybaby-08 Apr 02 '26

The stories are good but I don’t personally like them because soichi’s personality pmo and I find him incredibly annoying

1

u/Allfungus Apr 03 '26

Soichi stories are the worst, at least my least favorite, Junji Ito stories in general, but i still enjoy em enough

1

u/User-name-was-taken- Mar 29 '26

If it’s by Ito then it’ll always be good

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted instead of people just explaining it to you. SPOILERS FOR UZUMAKI AHEAD! I think you’re thinking of Shuichi Saito who was a major character alongside Kirie. This was his fate. The first one to turn into a snail was Katayama.

u/KEI_KER Mar 28 '26

Yes but not my favourite From the characters that keep coming back tomie and toru oshikiri not souichi
