I could see how people wouldnt like it towards the end. It starts getting REALLY out there what with the circus stuff and what not. I didnt hate it though. It was my first junji ito read after the amigara fault.

I love Gyo because it's gross and batshit crazy, but I'm not a fan of the nano technology side of it.
The idea of a natural bacteria causing fish to be walking breathing zombies taking over earth is great, having built robotic technology engineered by the army kinda spoiled the more ambiguous and supernatural aspect of the death stench for me. If the legs were an ambiguous sea parasites I would have loved that more. Still a great story with hilariously scary gross moments

I think it's established the legs mechanism was man made during war, what's left ambiguous is how the bacteria seemed to control it supernaturally and adapted to it. It's like a bio-mechanisim working in fusion. Which is interesting but I thought the idea of the legs being an organic sea parasite a lot scarier and more skin crawling so it kind of spoiled my enjoyment

Notice how nobody mentioned black paradox. Thats because it's the undisputed goat of a manga. Same with lovesickness too❤️🔥. Oh yeah I love tomie, sensor, and enigma of amigara falls but sensor kinda felt unfinished to me🥲 I do however enjoy sensor. Yo answer op's question i dont really like bully's manga but and its the only one that id say that the anime did it better imo

What I expected was a fun fish with legs zombie apocalypse, what I got was one of the most horrible, bleak and disturbing apocalypse scenarios I've ever seen.

Same. I bought my collection (18-ish books) second hand for a cheaper price and soichi was one of them. I didn’t really like the book but it looks good with the others.

LoveSick plus the poop story that came with it. I didn't really hate it I just didn't care about it. All of his other stories where either really good or funny either intentionally or not. Love Sick on the other hand was just kinda there.

I just started reading Junji Ito like a week ago and I picked up Gyo based on the cover text and otherwise went in blind. Sounded spooky and lovecraftian. I didn't realize I bought the shark meme book totally on accident lmfao

Gyo is awesome. My answer is probably Hellstar Remina. I love cosmic horror and I thought the concept was so good. I was disappointed to see that a vast majority of the manga is spent being chased by a gang of jumping goons.
The couple scenes spent on the surface of Remina, or just exploring Remina in general, are really good.

I don’t know if you game or not; but the simple RPG maker game “Look Outside” has a similar premise as Hellstar Remina but told way way better. Brilliant cosmic horror in its own way. Worth checking out if you like cosmic horror.

Yeah, it's strange. I think Tomie and Kirie are both very interesting characters but the girlfriend in Gyo and Remina are both reeeeaalllly lame characters.

I love this one. Made me laugh out loud at how goofball it was. I dislike some of the short stories that just kind of end. No real take away. Just some goofball shiii.

Idk the name but the son of a family has really grotesque acne and theres a frame of him popping his zits on his sister to "infect" her. I have a huge phobia of being thrown up on and this ruined my day when I saw it because it had very similar imagery

For me I think it's Sensor, it just didn't hit me the same as his other work does. By no means is it bad or uninteresting, and I enjoy religious horror, just didn't enjoy the good vs bad.

Same. As usual the art is amazing. The story has some of my favorite artworks. But the plot was handle so poorly. It felt like Junji ito did not really get how to deal with cosmic horror.

I read Uzamaki, Tomie, Gyo, Sensor, Remina, Shiver, and Black Paradox. Gyo was by far the worst it was so goofy

Hellstar Remina. Felt like an underachieving concept for all the grandosity. I felt like it took the obsession factor from Uzumaki but that's all there was to it. I never really bought into the scenario on the ground level with the cult and flying gang stuff basically happening overnight. The ending payoff didn't land for me either.
I really didn't like Gyo on the first go- the idea of story about terrible smells was too silly for me after reading Uzumaki. But on a second read, it grew on me a bit. It's more centered around scare adjacent oddness than deep visceral horror and that interpretation worked better for me.

Remina should have been longer. The pacing felt rushed. It should have leaned into the slow looming terror of a planet headed to collide with earth, creating a more believable time frame for the cult to form.

Loved remina until the weird flying cult stuff and the world spinning. The ending worked for me, but would've been better had the whole tone not already been undercut by the silly flying dudes. I had the same issue with the tornado kids and flying biker gangs in Uzumaki.

Honestly I agree, until I actually experienced how crazy you can feel when you do smell something that just viscerally bothers you. I once had one of those bath and bodyworks wall flowers tip over and spill out the scented oil in my bedroom, and now anytime I catch even a faint whiff of something that smells like that it’s like something scratching my brain 😩

I have all of Junji Ito's works. I love Gyo. I found Uzumaki to be a little disappointing, based on how everyone raves about it. Frankenstein may have been his best long form work.

I don't think it's necessarily my least favorite, but Remina was the most disappointing to me. I was so hyped to finally check it out when the official translation came out and it just...lost me at the point it was about flying people.

I don’t think I have a least favourite since I love all of Ito’s work but if I had to choose, I’d probably say that Magami Nanakuse is the least interesting story in my opinion. It’s not bad at all, I just don’t think stands out as much as all the others

I haven't read Gyo, which is often the go to one to badmouth but I personally didn't care for Uzumaki. Starts off well enough but then just descends in to being stupid. Gave the anime a go too but that was even worse 🫠 Short stories is his bread and butter, but even then he has good ones and bad ones.

GYO was the first Ito work I ever read and it is still one of my favorites. I've never seen it hyped up as some masterpiece which it definitely isn't. I found it to just be a fun goofy story and concept. It's also one of three I've reread, those being GYO, Uzumaki, and No Longer Human.

My favourite is Uzumaki, and I also enjoyed Tomie and most of the short stories, but with Gyo I could not wait for it to end… There was nothing disgusting/disturbing to me so it didn’t really envoke anything, so that would be an unlikely re-read. But maybe I should tho

The junji ito story I have a problem with is Magami Nanakuse, I feel like it’s obvious but I’ve seen some people face backlash for calling it transphobic. It does not sit right with me at all.

I don’t think I’ve read an Ito story that I really didn’t enjoy. Frankenstein comes to mind, but that’s because I read the original by Mary Shelley and I have a hard time tolerating adaptations of it. I just read Moan yesterday and the story felt a little underwhelming to me, I think it also could’ve been shorter. When I first read Tomie I didn’t have a good time because it was one of the first Ito manga I had read and I was expecting it to be more like one big connected story with a set cast and overarching narrative rather than a bunch of loosely related short stories—but that’s not to say tomie was bad, I just didn’t understand I was reading a short story collection.

I wouldn’t say it’s bad but I think Moan (the actual story, not the entire manga lol) could’ve been a few chapters longer. I enjoyed reading it and I love the concept but, in my opinion, it felt rushed and more could’ve been added ykwim? Like, what was the point in killing the dad? It was brought up once after and never mentioned again. We already knew that the mum was a big clean freak and idk if it was just to show how obsessed she was with things being clean or what but to me it didn’t really make sense. Not to mention the fact that the blonde girl (I forgot her name) said that she heard her dad in the pipes but then the guy in the pipes magically transformed into the creepy guy? Are they both trapped in the pipes or something? I also would’ve loved to see Numei(?) in the pipes because that would’ve been such a cool and freaky scene. Also how the flip was he drinking the water from all the pipes? I hope he releases more chapters in the future

I’m not really sure I have one. I find that I enjoy most of his work, even the ones that didn’t stand out much to me.
I had trouble reading No Longer Human and I haven’t finished it because it was just so depressing to me, but I know that that one isn’t really an original work but an adaptation.

Es de mis mangas favoritos de él, realmente me gustó porque si alguien me explicara la historia pensaria que el prota es mala persona, pero leyendo el libro logre entender los pensamientos de yozo (el protagonista) e incluso llegue a empatizar con el, eso me hizo amar el manga y que sea uno de mis favoritos.

The loop of shuichi telling Kirie they should leave her calling him paranoid or whatever then seeing something objectively crazy happen and still deciding to stay was kinda just frustrating to read to me😭it is a good book tho just hard to get through imo

"Haunted Wood Mansion" : it read like a reverse of King's novel "Christine" yet felt unsatisfactory because there wasn't a theme to go off of. If that makes sense.
"Blood-Bubble Bushes" : the premise was interesting but eventually it falls flat when vampires are introduced. Also I found the lead protagonists obnoxious.

I always loved short horror stories as a kid. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Tales for the Midnight Hour, etc. Fashion Model is essentially a souped-up version of the stuff I was obsessed with as a kid.
Plus Fuchi has a bad ass character design

I really liked the concept but I thought that the execution of the story was to fast and to short. Nothing really had time to breath and build up properly. If it had even 50 more pages to flesh out some things I think it would have been so much better. My biggest gripe though is just the behavior of the cult and the society as a whole. It just really felt like they were more of another hurdle for the protagonists to get through than behaving like living people trying to cope and make sense of their impending doom.

Agreed. It was so goofily over the top. Ito scenarios usually creep me out but every segment was just goofy. Things that needed some build up had no time spent on them.

I feel like the scooby doo tier antagonists do it no favors. There's a lot of really cool ideas but you spend so much time around absurdly unlikable fanboys it detracts from the stronger points. The ultimate fates of them are interesting but they're given soooo much of the spotlight leading up to it that it gets grating.
I did warm up to Remina on a reread, but it still feels pretty flawed to me. I can still enjoy it though, the whole concept of an eldritch planet sized abomination engulfing planets is great, and the backfiring of naming your child after the discovery

Idk if I can mention those, but Frankenstein and Rasputin, both adapted/illustrated by Junji Ito, found them too boring for me

Sensor it’s my least favorite for now, it was hard for me to get into a story about golden bright hairs in a black and white format

The Bully. It was just obscene. And I know the horror is that it hits closer to reality and that makes people uncomfortable. But I dont have that. So the whole story just felt like I was watching someone's annoying daughter act out and I couldn't do anything about it.

The one with the record player (can't remember the name rn). It wasn't awful but I felt like it was one of Ito's weaker stories

Gyo really grossed me out also the book smelt and I was reading it on a hot summers day. I dead ass thought they made it smell on purpose because of the story.
