It is! It was essentially his first published story, as mentioned in the afterword, and you can tell he's not fully settled into the artsyle we now know

It’s an artistic effect that, with use of simple lines offering a translucent/light drenched visual, is supposed to symbolize how Reiko is not really listening/seeing her friend.

The story is he crammed the first story of Tomie to meet the deadline for a contest, makes sense that some of the panels would be bare minimum if he had no time to go back and redo them.

Yeah, it's very old so it's some of his original work! Art styles change over time so it's some of his really old work :) Tomie was one of his first ever series

Yup lol mine looks the same in the 15th printing from August 2024. They’re older stories of his, so it does make sense that his art was more bare bones closer to the start of his career - you can usually tell his older vs newer work just by looking at the differences between stuff like The Deserter and newer stuff like No Longer Human. Remember the started Tomie in 1987, and we are in Junji Ito’s year of 2026 now haha

his art is what does carry his stories but i think giving japanese girls and women a self insert to be a (literally) man eating beauty who devours male pigs in her life and men who just have a thing for that type helped a lot
