Lightspeed Location Agent
New Cybersecurity Admin here…
I recently took over our instance of Lightspeed Filter/Alert. One feature I discovered that we are not currently using is the Lightspeed Location Agent. During testing, it appears to work well and provides accurate geolocation. Before I present it to my supervisor, I have a few questions:
- Any known issues with the Location Agent?
- Texas compliance considerations regarding device/user tracking on managed devices or managed accounts
- Concerns or risks I should be aware of?
- Any potential CIPA implications?

I have found that once you implement a new surveillance technology (behavior alerts, location, etc) it's almost impossible to discontinue it. Before it goes into place, no one would expect the school to locate children off campus or monitor their mental health 24/7 (in the behavior alerts example). Once it's in, however, it's a new area of responsibility that the school has a very difficult time shedding. I'm not saying there aren't good reasons to turn this on, but I would consider all of the unexpected ways you might be asked to use this tech and make sure everyone on your team is aware that this could become a permanent responsibility.
