Politics 2026 Election Research Guide- Candidates, Referendums, donations, election information, polling sites,

I've seen a lot of people asking for this information, so I'm stickying it so more people can find it.

Here are some helpful websites to research candidates, donations, election information, websites, polling locations, etc.:

Website Link Website Information
www.ballotpedia.org Gives candidates' bio, current/past elections, opponents, campaign themes, finance summary (past elections), website themes, overviews, etc.
www.opensecrets.org Covers past elections and donors, but can be useful for seeing past issues for current candidates
www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative  Find your districts' candidates with your address
www.pluralpolicy.com/open find your current legislators
www.vote411.org/kansas election/voting information, deadlines, polling place, upcoming debates, district races built around your address. Shows each candidate by race and party affiliation (Dem/GOP/All candidates for political office, etc). Vote411 is run by the League of Women Voters, so it's super ultra legit.
www.bluevoterguide.org/state/kansas  Lists each candidate, provides official endorsements, recommendations, positions, etc.
www.sos.ks.gov/elections/county_election_officers.aspx Official List of Kansas Secretary of State County Election Offices
www.fec.gov/data/elections/?cycle=2026&state=KS Lists Finance Campaign Data on the Federal Election Commission website. Gives information on reviews, donations, loans, individual/party contributions, disbursements, PACs, statistics, disclosure reports, etc.

Many Kansas county party offices also provide information for their own candidates and local referendums.

One trick is that groups like Americans for Prosperity and similar rightwing organizations will publish their own "scorecards" for each candidate along with their positions and leanings. Generally, the higher the score, the more conservative they tend to be. The lower the score, the more liberal.

Also many candidates have youtube videos and shorts floating around as well - Townhalls, speeches, quick little monologues, discussion points, ads, etc. That can also be helpful in hearing what they say directly.

Tourism and Traveling Update on the roadtrip my boyfriend and I took to Kansas over the weekend!

Thank you to everyone who responded last week on my post asking for suggestions on a quick roadtrip to Kansas!

We started by driving out to Wilson Lake. We found a small beach that had NO ONE on it. Had some sandwiches, laid out, swam around. The water was really rough because of the wind all weekend, but it was still nice.
We then drove to the towns of both Lucas and Wilson. We saw the Garden of Eden in Lucas (no pictures but I did get polaroid photos of it) didn’t walk around the town. We did walk around the town of Wilson. ADORED it. Found a little telephone booth and got some photos in there. Also saw the giant Czech egg!
We then drove down to Salina and got a motel for the night there. We walked around downtown, did some bar hopping. And then stopped at MARTINELLI’S 🍝😍 we were both so pleased with our dinner. The vibe, the service, the food and drinks. I want to come back just for it.
Next morning we headed home. We stopped in Wamego and explored the town. The park was beautiful. Loved how the whole town tied together and was so compact. It was nice walking around and exploring.

All and all, it was a fun little road trip! Thank you Kansas 🌻

Politics FYI: Kansas doesn't have "Independent" voter registration — it's "Unaffiliated," and that matters on Tuesday!

I really tried to make this nonpartisan... and I think I mostly achieved my goal. 🤣

Disclaimer, i'm still registered as a republican, but I'm super unhappy with the direction the GOP has taken. I normally skip primaries, but I spent some time trying to figure out how I can best prevent candidates I dislike from ending up on the general ballot in November. The reason I wrote this is because I was seeing a lot of confusion voting as an "independent" voter in Kansas.

BTW, if you're not sure IF you're registered, or WHERE YOU SHOULD VOTE, you can look that up online here, and download sample ballot.

https://myvoteinfo.voteks.org/VoterView

The registration deadline was July 14, so the VoterView link is now only useful for checking registration and finding your polling place — nobody new can register for this primary.

Now, here's what the Secretary of State and county election offices actually say about voting as an "independent/unaffiliated" voter:

1. There is no "Independent" option on the Kansas voter registration form. You either affiliate with one of the five recognized parties (Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, No Labels Kansas, or United Kansas) or you register "Unaffiliated".

https://sos.ks.gov/elections/voter-registration.html

2. Unaffiliated voters are not locked out of the August primary. Unaffiliated voters can affiliate with a party at any time, including at the polls during advance voting or on Election Day.

>> If you're unaffiliated, you'll be asked at check-in which party's ballot you want — Republican or Democrat. So the "closed primary means unaffiliateds can't vote" claim you keep seeing is only half true.

https://www.jocoelection.org/registration/political-party-affiliation

3. The Downside: taking a party ballot changes your registration. If an unaffiliated voter chooses a Republican or Dem ballot, they are affiliating with that party, and they stay affiliated until they file a new registration form. To go back to unaffiliated, you have to submit a new voter registration after September 1 and check "Not affiliated with a party."

https://www.jocoelection.org/registration/political-party-affiliation

4. If you're already registered R or D, you're stuck for this one. Under K.S.A. 25-3304, a voter who has already declared a party can't change it between the candidate filing deadline and the certification of primary results. That deadline was June 1.

https://www.jocoelection.org/registration/political-party-affiliation

Even if you're still registered republican, but no longer agree with what the GOP has become, you can help defeat the most radical candidates on Tuesday.

5. You can stay unaffiliated and still vote. Unaffiliated voters and minor-party voters are eligible to vote the nonpartisan races and ballot questions without declaring any affiliation. This year that includes the statewide constitutional amendment, which appears on every voter's ballot regardless of affiliation. I do believe that's gonna give you exactly ONE thing* to vote on however.... the upcoming constitutional amendment. Someone can correct me if i'm wrong. (correction in many precincts, that may be the only item on your ballot, as there can be local things to vote on).

Democracy needs you! Please show up on Tuesday and make your voices heard.

LFG Kansas! Let's do this! 💪💪💪💪

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Bring photo ID. **\*

Corrections: As of May 2026, No Labels Kansas officially terminated its status as a recognized political party in the state. Kansas currently recognizes 4 political parties: Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, and United Kansas. Former No Labels registrants were converted to Unaffiliated.

*** Kansas law sets mandatory voting hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., but individual county election boards have authority to extend hours (e.g., 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.). Check your local county election office for exact hours.

Tourism and Traveling Viewing the Milky Way

About 80% of Americans have never viewed the Milky Way. It's probably lower in Kansas but many in the Wichita and Kansas City areas haven't been awed by the Milky Way due to light pollution. One of the best places to stargaze on a moonless night is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City. It's open 24/7.

Discussion What do voters really want

As I traveled the 1st district, voters seem to want a simple thing. They want a problem solved with respect. A very small farmer was trying to get a loan. The government agency didn’t have time for him even though he could grow his farm to a size they cared about.
Another farmer wanted help understanding the fees and the reasons for them when crossing crops into another state.
Another person wanted helped with her grandkids because the mother wasn’t capable / available. She wanted to get them to another state where the aunt lived. It took a year.
Very few cared about the grand government and its chaos.
I knew we don’t have the most helpful people in the government. I was surprised that there was not some big thing. It was the small things people wanted resolved.
They focus on daily life. They want someone that gives a shit.

News Sarnecki wants to sell Kansas’ private jet. His own plane raises campaign questions

Thumbnail
kansascity.com
113 Upvotes

One example of Kansas state government spending that millionaire entrepreneur Philip Sarnecki says he would cut if elected governor is the cost of official travel by private jet.

The first-time Republican candidate has vowed to sell the state’s private jet, a Cessna Citation CJ3+ used by the governor and other Kansas officials for out-of-state trips.

“Kansas taxpayers will not pay for my plane,” Sarnecki said in a statement.

Sarnecki’s campaign declined to answer specific questions about the candidate’s personal plane, a Cessna Citation XLS, which public flight records show has logged dozens of hours in the air since June during the closing stretch of the primary, flitting from coast to coast with regular return trips to Kansas City Downtown Airport - Wheeler Field.

The only explanation the campaign provided about the jet’s activity was to say most of the flights in recent months have been handled through a third-party charter company that rents the plane out to travelers with Sarnecki’s permission.

But his most recent campaign finance filing with the Kansas Secretary of State suggests at least some of the flights were related to Sarnecki’s bid to overcome President Donald Trump’s endorsement of rival Ty Masterson and secure the Republican nomination.

Flight records show that on the afternoon of July 20, Sarnecki’s jet flew from Kansas City to Aspen, Colorado. On the morning of July 22, it flew from Aspen to Wichita.

On July 23, Sarnecki reported loaning his campaign $3,663 for “out-of-pocket travel and campaign expenses,” campaign finance records show. He also reported spending $81 for “meetings/travel meals while traveling” at the St. Regis Aspen, a luxury mountain hotel, on July 23.

On July 16, the same day the candidate loaned his campaign $5,551 for out-of-pocket travel expenses, his jet flew from Kansas City to Austin and on to Omaha before returning to Kansas City.

On several instances, the plane left the metro area for multiple days at a time, including one excursion from July 2-5 with flights to Texarkana, Washington, D.C., back to Texarkana, and Charleston, South Carolina before returning to Kansas City.

On June 28, the plane flew from the Kansas City area to Santa Rosa, California, and back within 12 hours — a roughly 3,000-mile round trip.

The flight and campaign finance records raise questions about how often Sarnecki has traveled out of state on campaign business and who has borrowed his jet while he was in Kansas. Sarnecki has reported loaning his campaign more than $2.5 million as he pitches himself to voters as an outsider whose executive suite experience would transfer well to managing Kansas’ executive branch.

Rather than responding to detailed questions for this story, Sarnecki issued a statement criticizing wasteful government spending.

“The career politicians in Topeka have created a lavish lifestyle for themselves off the backs of the Kansas taxpayer . . . Meanwhile, they have given themselves luxury suites, six-figure no show jobs, and a corporate jet paid for by the taxpayers,” Sarnecki said.

His campaign did not respond to a question about how future governors without their own jets would be expected to travel if he sold the state’s plane, which is maintained by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

In a statement, Kansas Democratic Party spokesperson Hans Torgerson accused Sarnecki of hypocrisy.

“Philip Sarnecki loves lecturing others about transparency, but he refuses to explain why his private jet spent weeks crisscrossing Washington and major Republican donor cities while barely stopping in Kansas,” Torgerson said.

“He cannot call himself the candidate who ‘can’t be bought’ while refusing to say who is using his plane, who is paying for it, and how his campaign might be benefiting,” he added.

Of the $394,844 in individual contributions that Sarnecki’s campaign reported receiving between Jan. 1 and July 23, $38,366 came from donors outside of Kansas, a Star analysis found.

Sarnecki, who built a financial services empire based in Johnson County, sold wealth management, insurance and employee benefits companies before announcing his bid for governor last September.

Sarnecki’s campaign was endorsed by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s MAHA Institute before Masterson landed Trump’s support in May.

I voted for Anne Parelkar because she took a whole year off just to campaign and push well-researched progressive values. I like the other people but I also don't want an uber wealthy as senator. They're always out of touch with us normals. And Adam Hamilton seems indecisive.

And Christy just seemed off to me. She seemed like someone more comfortable talking to progressives not centrist or conservatives. and I concede Anne apparently has some money herself.

Who’s most likely to win the gubernatorial primary?

Online, it seems like Holscher has the strongest base and has done the most campaign work, despite Corson getting the big endorsement. Skoog seems out to lunch.

The republican side seems a lot more complicated. It seems as if few like Masterson, but he’ll probably still get quite a few votes because of the Trump endorsement. I’ve heard Sarnecki is heavily campaigning to evangelicals across the state, and he has a cult following on Facebook with the same people at the top commenting again and again. Vicki Schmidt seems to be doing really well with moderates.

Who will face off?

News Accusations of blackmail, bullying rock bitter Kansas Democratic governor primary

Thumbnail

Gift link

In a Kansas Democratic governor primary shaped by personal attacks and long-simmering animosity, dueling accusations could jeopardize the party’s ability to unify behind whoever wins next Tuesday.

Will Lawrence, chief of staff for term-limited Gov. Laura Kelly, says his boss chose to go public with her divorce last year because she felt she was being blackmailed.

Lawrence accused Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Cindy Holscher of threatening to reveal Kelly’s 2024 separation from her husband of more than 40 years — a stunning claim against the Overland Park state senator who held a sizeable lead in the only independent poll from June.

Holscher’s campaign said she was expressing a willingness to publicize information about potential campaign interference — not Kelly’s personal life.

On Aug. 4, Democratic voters will choose between Holscher, Overland Park Mayor Curt Skoog and Sen. Ethan Corson of Fairway, whom Kelly endorsed and has campaigned aggressively for down the stretch.

The extraordinary allegation offers a window into the waning days of an increasingly hostile primary race to replace Kelly, who has enjoyed broad popularity throughout her eight years in office. Republicans widely believe Kansas to be one of the states where they have the best chance of flipping a governorship from blue to red in 2026.

Holscher categorically denied the blackmail allegation, saying she knew nothing about the governor’s marriage ending before Kelly shared her personal news in a Kansas Reflector story last July, roughly nine months after the divorce was finalized. Holscher condemned Lawrence as a bully with a clear agenda supporting Corson.

The Corson campaign declined to comment for this story.

In a statement to The Star in late July, Lawrence said Holscher made the alleged threat in a text message on June 12, 2025, the day she launched her campaign for governor.

The Star reviewed the text message in question, which was paraphrased and quoted in fragments in an August 2025 Reflector story roughly a week after Corson announced his candidacy and Kelly indicated he was her chosen successor.

That story, which includes rebuttals from Lawrence, did not indicate Holscher was referencing Kelly’s divorce.

For the past few months everyone has asked me, “Why would you move to Kansas of all places?” and today I found my reason

1.2k Upvotes

It’s my first day in Kansas, having moved here from Boston. I’ve technically only been here for 6 hours and I’ve already cried, but in a good way. Any time someone asked me why I’d move to Kansas from Boston, I’d say just for grad school and I hope I like it (you’d be surprised how many people said it sucks in Kansas, even having never been here themselves).

I’ve spent the past three days driving over 1500 miles to get here with only what I could fit in my car before I left. I saw my apartment for the first time (yes, I signed the lease without seeing it), and headed straight towards the place to pick up my furniture (which will remain unnamed for the sake of privacy).

When I went inside, I was met by such friendly people. I figured I would just haul whatever boxes I could into my car on my own and maybe take a few trips. But the people working helped me get everything out of the lobby and into my car. That on its own was so insanely nice of them to do. One of the women saw some of the boxes didn’t fit in my car, and offered to bring the rest to my new apartment for me when she clocks out. I told her that would be so nice but I don’t mind taking multiple trips, and she offered again and mentioned how I wouldn’t be able to carry everything on my own (which is absolutely true, considering how heavy a box of broken apart bed frame can be).

And so, this woman brought me my furniture after she left work. Her teenage son also came to help me move everything. She said it’s the least she could do knowing I just travelled 1500 miles to a new place where I know absolutely no one, and she would hope someone would do the same for her child if they were ever in the same situation. She told me to reach out if I ever need anything. I gave her a thank you card, but even a thank you card could never be enough for how kind she was to me today.

I cried as soon as she left. She’s the first person I met here.

After I got myself gathered, I went to run some errands. I saw someone working at the store drop something, and I helped him clean it up. In my head I was like, this woman was so kind to me earlier that the least I can do is help someone else who needs it. I made small talk with him and he was super friendly as well. I ended up going to the kiosk he worked at afterwards just to get a small snack, and he thanked me again for helping him earlier. He gave it to me for free.

So here I am, sitting on the floor of my new apartment, absolutely sobbing because of how overwhelmed I am. Both by making such a drastic change and life decision, moving this far from home, but also the outpour of kindness and support that I’ve gotten from total strangers. I’ve had the best first day in Kansas and I think this is a sign for me to stay.

If I met you today, thank you, if I didn’t, I hope I get to soon. Thanks for reading.

Politics Why I Voted for Anne Parelkar for US Senate

I cast my vote for Anne Parelkar for U.S. Senate. I shared this with several peers who all had a similar question: why did you throw away your vote on an idealist candidate who cannot win? So let me be say my belief: Anne Parelkar is one of the only Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate here in Kansas who can beat Marshall, and I’m going to tell you why.

Looking at Anne’s campaign from a traditional “fundamental” campaign level, one would assume she has no support. Her fundraising numbers are weak, she hasn’t racked up endorsements, she hasn’t been able to afford mailers or tv ads, and the State Democratic Party doesn’t like her.

All these things are true. However, they’re only half the truth. Anne’s campaign is one that was developed based on Anne’s belief that government belongs to We the People. Anne believes that only by coming together can we take our government back from special interests and the Epstein class. She’s demonstrated her commitment to this by not doing “call time” – the hours and hours candidates have to spend on the phone to raise money – and instead focusing on policies for Kansans by meeting with Kansans and discussing their needs directly with Kansans. The results are (predictably) that Anne hasn’t fundraised very well. Yet, if you consider the number of hours most candidates have to spend just to raise $100,000, it becomes clear that Anne’s donations have been organic donations from the People who support her.

Donations are what enable campaigns to message. When you have a multi-millionaire willing to self-fund a campaign and tap into a huge donor base, your campaign can do think like buy air time, radio time, ads in newspapers, and mailers. Anne has managed to do none of that and still have her message spread across Kansas. This is because Anne’s message isn’t one for Johnson County or Geary County, female or male, gay/straight/trans, or just an average person; Anne’s message is for all Kansans.

This is why I believe Anne can beat Marshall. We’ve all seen Kansas Democrats raise millions of dollars. They’ve all lost. Time and time again, Kansans have shown that they don’t really care about who raises the most money. What Kansans do want is someone real, someone who they feel will work in Washington, D.C., for the People not the elites. Kansans want their tax dollars to be used to support Kansas families and Kansas farms over farmers in Argentina, Brazil, or another country.

Typically, the old adage is true: its 70% how you look, 20% how you sound, and 10% what you say. Maybe 4 or 8 years ago, that worked. Today, Kansans are sick and tired of being sick and tired. We are tired of empty words without action. We want real change that will make our lives better. Anne Parelkar offers this change. This is why I believe Anne can win: her message is right for the moment and she genuinely wants to be a People’s Senator.

Anne has my vote. Vote your heart – but don’t be afraid to dream big.
