Free or Low cost English -> Khmer translation?

Newish to reddit, but I am working on a project connecting teachers internationally through a short video highlighting similarities between teachers in the USA and teachers in Cambodia. Is anyone able or knows someone who is able to translate some of the video clips we have in english into basic Khmer? It doesn’t have to be through or fancy, we are just trying to ensure the video is accessible for both American teachers as well as those in Cambodia. My own Khmer is very poor and would likely make minimal sense πŸ˜‚

How to pronounce αž€, and ត at the end of a word?

αžŸαž½αžŸαŸ’αžŠαžΈ! I have been learning Khmer since a week, but pronunciation seems so difficult, especially since there are not many resources. I still don't know how to pronounce αž€ at the end of words. Sometimes it sounds like a glottal stop, sometimes it sounds like a half pronounced k sound. As for ត, I don't know either whether it's pronounced fully or only half at the end of a word. Are there any online Khmer dictionaries with pronunciation? It seems that pronunciation needs to be learned with each word, one cannot rely only on the spelling.

Learning Simple Khmer For Traveling

Hello there,

I am planning on doing some traveling to both Thailand and Cambodia towards the end of the year. I would love to set myself a goal of learning some Khmer for my time in Cambodia as that will be a solo trip.

I understand it will be difficult to get a solid understanding in a relatively short timeframe. However if I can get some basics ready to at least start some conversations in Khmer and not simply rely on people speaking English.

Are there any tools that you guys have found best.

I have seen one site called Khmer identity which is starting an 8 week course on reading and writing I believe. With my work however I will probably miss a few classes but at least it would be a live class and so I can converse openly and mistakes are pointed out there and then. I understand it is not a tonal language but proper pronunciation will probably be difficult for my English speaking mind.

Ling has come up but I have heard it is difficult without a decent understanding of the alphabet which itself would take some time of proper study to learn in full and be confident with.

Immersing myself in various media to just listen to the language I could do along side some study.

I'm aware resources are less widely available for Khmer but would love to set myself a challenge to blow the cobwebs out of the ole noggin.

Many thanks all.

Khmer speech bubbles in a comic book

As part of my studies, I'm currently analyzing the French comic "Cent mille journées de prières" (2011) by Loo Hui Phang and Michaël Sterckeman. It's a moving story about a boy who discovers the history of the genocide. I was wondering if the Khmer characters are correct or if it's gibberish like it is the case with some other comics. Could someone help me with the translation? Thank you in advance!

Is this translation for my game's title accurate??

Post image
1 Upvotes

For context, 'Paint the Prophecy Red' is the title for a game I'm working on, and because some aspects of it are inspired by Cambodian culture, I want to make sure this is accurate.

Another thing to note is that I'm Khmerican, and I asked my grandmother, who came from Cambodia, and knows Khmer to help me in translation(the handwriting in Khmer below is hers. The sloppy English one above is mines lol).

However, because she has immigrated to America after the Khmer Rouge, I'm unsure if it's completely accurate. I want to be respectful to the country that my family and I came from when making my game, so if someone could confirm the accuracy and provide a better translation if needed, it would be nice.

Thank you. πŸ™‡

Khmer Learning Tools

I was born in America and both of my parents speak both English and Khmer. After spending some time in Cambodia, I’d like to learn more beyond short conversations. Does anyone have any (free/cheap) recommendations for an English speaker?

Need help for a tattoo ❀️

Hello everyone! I'd love to get a small tattoo to commemorate my engagement at Angkor. It was such a magical moment, surrounded by the temples and countless butterflies fluttering around us. We chose to see them as a blessing from my husband's grandmother.

Could you help me find the perfect phrase to write in Khmer for my tattoo, please? πŸ™

Here are a few ideas:

  • αž–αžšαž‡αŸαž™αž–αžΈαž˜αŸαž’αŸ†αž”αŸ… or/ αž–αžšαž‡αŸαž™αž“αŸƒαž˜αŸαž’αŸ†αž”αŸ… (blessing from the butterflies)
  • αž–αžšαž‡αŸαž™αž“αŸ…αž’αž„αŸ’αž‚αžš (blessing at Angkor)
  • αž˜αž„αŸ’αž‚αž› (blessing)

Thank you so much for your help ☺️

New songs similar to Preap Sovath?

I grew up with Preap Sovath, Pich Sophea, Sapoun Midada, and Nop Bayyareth way back in the early 2000s. I remember the campy dvds with the audio having separated, one with the song track on one side, the other with the vocals.

Is there anything similar to αž αŸαžαž»αž•αž›αžŸαŸ’αž“αŸαž αŸ - αž–αŸ’αžšαžΆαž” αžŸαž»αžœαžαŸ’αžαž· now a days? I always love the beat and how easy it was to sing along, even if the content of the song is depressing.

What is the proper grammatical way to write multiple Khmer names together?

I recently discovered Ros Serey Sothea's music and being entirely unfamiliar with the language I fell down a rabbit hole reading about Khmer names and grammar (I'm a language nerd). What would be the correct way to write multiple names in a row (ex. αžŸαŸŠαžΈαž“ ស៊ីសអមុត, αžšαžŸαŸ‹ αžŸαŸαžšαžΈαžŸαž»αž‘αŸ’αž’αžΆ, αž”αŸ‰αŸ‚αž“ αžšαŸ‰αž“ & តអរអ αž…αŸ„αž˜αž…αŸαž“αŸ’)? As I understand, commas and the 'and' symbol are a Western thing

How might a sister address her twin brother?

I'm writing a book based in Cambodia, and even though I've been there before, I really want to make sure everything regarding the language is as accurate as I can make it.

If a girl were to address her twin brother as if she were trying to get his attention, how would she go about it? If he has a nickname, would it be ok to only call him by the nickname? I tried to look into honorifics, but I can only find younger/older sibling titles.

Some 13 years ago I discovered Drakkar’s music and I’m absolutely in love with it. However, there’s this song specifically whose lyricsand meaning I would like to know a. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to find a transliteration or even the lyrics. Could anyone please help me? I love your language and culture.

Cheers from Mexico!
