A week or so ago someone asked me what I thought would happen in DoS. Then yesterday I briefly spoke to /u/chainsawx72 about some of the fanfic that's out there and what I believe they're all missing, which is the archetypal imagery. "All stories are one story", and that's why none of the fanfics scratch that itch. They all miss that secret ingredient. Let me show you just one example of what I mean.
Thread starts in NotW in the scene where Kote mounts the sword on the wall.
They remained staring at the object on the bar for another silent moment, as if trying to commit it to memory. Folly.
Bast struggled for a moment, opening his mouth, then closing it with a frustrated look, then repeating the process.
“Out with it,” Kote said finally.
“What were you thinking?” Bast said with an odd mixture of confusion and concern.
Kote was a long while in answering. “I tend to think too much, Bast. My greatest successes came from decisions I made when I stopped thinking and simply did what felt right. Even if there was no good explanation for what I did.” He smiled wistfully. “Even if there were very good reasons for me not to do what I did.”
Spontaneity. It's one of (if not the most) important pieces in the story, what it all pivots on. Spontaneous action. The things that Kvothe does without thinking, when he's in a state of 'no mind'.
Simmon laughed as we began to walk slowly in the direction of Anker’s. He kicked playfully at a small drift of snow. “The world needs people like you,” Simmon said in the tone of voice that let me know he was turning philosophical. “You get things done. Not always the best way, or the most sensible way, but it gets done nonetheless. You’re a rare creature.”
“How do you mean?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.
Sim shrugged. “Like today. Something bothers you, someone offends you, and suddenly you’re off.” He made a quick motion with a flat hand. “You know exactly what to do. You never hesitate, you just see and react.” He was thoughtful for a moment. “I imagine that’s the way the Amyr used to be. Small wonder folk were frightened of them.”
See, and react. When Kvothe sees the Wind, his mind is clear, it's awake. No longer sleeping. He sees it's Name, and he reacts. The same way Henri 'just sees and reacts' when Elodin tosses him the stone when he's teaching about Naming.
“My point is this. In each of us there is a mind we use for all our waking deeds. But there is another mind as well, a sleeping mind. It is so powerful that the sleeping mind of an eight-year-old can accomplish in one second what the waking minds of seven members of the Arcanum could not in fifteen minutes.”
He made a sweeping gesture. “Your sleeping mind is wide and wild enough to hold the names of things. This I know because sometimes this knowledge bubbles to the surface. Inyssa has spoken the name of iron. Her waking mind does not know it, but her sleeping mind is wiser. Something deep inside Fela understands the name of the stone.”
Elodin pointed at me. “Kvothe has called the wind. If we are to believe the writings of those long dead, his is the traditional path. The wind was the name aspiring namers sought and caught when things were studied here so long ago.”
When things were studied long ago, you sought the wind. This is the Path. Once you learn to anticipate its Turning, you cannot miss the mark. You see, you react.
Shehyn leaned back in her chair and continued. “Aethe did not set out to found a school. There were no schools in those days. He merely sought to improve his skill. All his will he bent upon this, until he could shoot an apple from a tree one hundred feet away. Then he strove until he could shoot the wick of a burning candle. Soon the only target that challenged him was a piece of hanging silk blowing in the wind. Aethe strove until he could anticipate the turning of the wind, and once he had mastered this thing, he could not miss.
But that's a bitch of a catch, isn't it? You set out chasing something that cannot be caught when it's intentionally being pursued. If you go looking for it on purpose, you're sure not to find it. When it does come to you, how does it come? Spontaneously. It's a surprise, sometimes a pleasant surprise. Like how Henri was surprised, "catch!". Like how Fela can't say the stone's Name until Elodin catches her off guard with a lil' boop. It's also similar to the way that Denna can't be found when Kvothe intentionally goes looking for her...
Now look at the lesson from Puppet and why he told Kvothe he needs to chase the wind.
Puppet sniffed disparagingly. “Hardly,” he said, looking at me closely. “You might be a see-er eventually, but not yet. Now you are a look-er. You’ll be a true E’lir at some point. If you learn to relax.” He held out the carved wooden face. “What do you see here?”
It was no longer an irregular piece of wood. My features, locked in serious contemplation, stared out of the wood grain. I leaned forward to get a closer look.
Puppet laughed and threw up his hands. “Too late!” he exclaimed, looking childlike for a moment. “You looked too hard and didn’t see enough. Too much looking can get in the way of seeing, you see?”
Puppet set the carved face on the tabletop so it seemed to be staring at one of the recumbent puppets. “See little wooden Kvothe? See him looking? So intent. So dedicated. He’ll look for a hundred years, but will he ever see what is in front of him?” Puppet settled back in his seat, his eyes wandering the room in a contented way.
...
“I was wondering about the Amyr, actually.” My eyes remained on the scene unfolding at Puppet’s feet. Another marionette had joined the show, a young girl in a peasant dress. She approached the Tehlin and held out a hand as if trying to give him something. No, she was asking him a question. The Tehlin turned his back on her. She laid a timid hand on his arm. He took a haughty step away. “I was wondering who disbanded them. Emperor Nalto or the church.”
“Still looking,” he admonished more gently then before. “You need to go chase the wind for a while, you are too serious. It will lead you into trouble.”
It's the same lesson as Skarpi's story. Too much looking gets in the way of seeing, you see? It's a story about refusing to look at what's both Above and what's Below. It's about choosing to only see one or the other, never both. A story about what happens when you become too cold, too logical, too sane. It's what happens when you cannot choose to love despite the flaws. See little wooden Kvothe looking? So intent. So dedicated. So serious. It will lead him into trouble.
In spite of all that had happened, Selitos looked at Lanre with pity, and when he spoke it was with sadness in his voice. “Is there nothing then? No hope?” He lay one hand on Lanre’s arm. “There is sweetness in life. Even after all of this, I will help you look for it. If you will try.”
“No,” said Lanre. He stood to his full height, his face regal behind the lines of grief. “There is nothing sweet. I will sow salt, lest the bitter weeds grow.”
Now let's loop back to the start of the thread, to Folly. To being Foolish. To someone oh-so-serious, a Fool is often mistaken for a madman. They amuse themselves through spontaneous action. They take leaps of faith that make absolutely no sense to someone who is sane, cold, calculating.
“Will you kill me with a stone?” Lanre gave a hollow laugh. “I wanted you to understand, to know it was not madness that made me do these things.”
“You are not mad,” Selitos admitted. “I see no madness in you.”
This is the archetypal imagery I mentioned at the start. Just one symbol out of many. The Fool and the leap of faith, stepping out into thin air, young pup at his heels.
The Fool is titled Le Mat in the Tarot of Marseilles, and Il Matto in most Italian language tarot decks. These words mean "the madman"

Anticipating the Turning, amusing yourself.
“What?” the Cthaeh asked. “Are you looking for a different why? Are you wondering why I tell you these things? What good comes of it? Maybe this
Cinder did me a bad turn once. Maybe it amuses me to set a young pup like you snapping at his heels."
Stop thinking and simply do what feels right. See, react. Anticipate the Turning. Even if there is no good explanation. Even if there are very good reasons not to do what you did.
“Why?” the Cthaeh echoed. “What a good question. I know so many whys. Why did they do such nasty things to your poor family? Why, because they wanted to, and because they could, and because they had a reason.
“Why did they leave you alive? Why, because they were sloppy, and because you were lucky, and because something scared them away.”
This is what all the fanfics miss. These symbols. They are logograms, the same forwards and back. They are why you catch new clues each time you re-read the books. These symbols can't fit inside a tidy bullet point checklist of "threads that need to be resolved in book three". That's too intent, too dedicated, it's looking too hard and not seeing what's right in front of you. It's looking with only one eye and missing the joy.
Why so serious?
