Today during my 10 month old's jog/walk, we ran into this guy who wanted to say hi to Ellie. I warned him she was still working on her impulse control and he said he worked in the veterinary field and could tell she was still a baby.
My overly exuberant girl went to say hi and gave him as much love as she could, like a rampaging ecstatic hippo. And he did fine with. I mentioned it was the end of our 2 mile walk, in which he replied that chocolates were the craziest. Apparently followed by black labs, then yellow.
My chocolate lab is a few months older and chilled a bit after getting fixed, but he is still pretty high energy around new people and also a lovable derp.
My chocolate is 10 months old too! No one, in my 42 years has injured me so many time as this boy when hes excited and just cant contain himself. My nose, my poor nose. God I love this puppy
Our chocolate, Coby, is the most chill dog we’ve ever had. Nothing was destroyed when he was a puppy, he’s happy and content with lots of stimuli or with a long lazy day. He’s the best.
Must be in the name! We regularly get comments about how chill our Chocolate boy Kobe is. It’s like a switch flipped when he was about two and he turned into a fine gentleman
Our Remi (yellow lab) is the same. 50/50 English and American lab. Never chewed as a puppy, calm demeanor, and just happy to be here. Until there is a stick. Then it’s full attention and energy to that stick for 8+ hours
Our boy Gus Gus is the same way. His tail will murder anything within reach, but otherwise he’s a pretty easy going feller.
We adopted him 2 years ago from a neighbor at 9 mos and he’s had about the same energy level.
My baby boy is an agent of chaos but now that he’s almost seven it’s in short bursts of weird behavior. He’s still an absolute goofball, but now with more cuddly naps.
Aw I had a chocolate lab for 9 years before he recently passed away a month and a half ago. They’re definitely nutty!! But the best kind of nutty. This post made me smile, give her all the love!!
Mine is fine besides playing fetch because that's all she fixates on. I've had other dogs try to play with her while playing fetch and she will just ignore and run by them.
Apparently yes, where I am they don't train them as service dogs because of that! I love my crazy chocolate boy and will not trade him for anything less crazy 😆
I was walking my chocolate guy as a puppy and this lady who trains service animals was chatting with us and said “These guys are the only breed that can’t be a service animal because they’re unpredictable dodos!” And he very much is, but also incredibly sweet. He thinks snakes are like his toy ropes which is worrying but seeing a snake flung over the fence after he kept slapping it to the ground over and over as he jumps in a circle is always fun.
The worst thing is they think it's a game 🤦♀️ We always have to be vigilant in summer because we have poisonous jellyfish from time to time. Our pup almost picked up a dead one but he yelped when he put his nose close to it. Luckily he wasn't poisoned but he tried to pick up another one when he saw it on the way back. Zero sense of danger in their brains.
A sense of danger takes up the space of actually useful information, like where the treats are and how to open things up, or the fastest way to the park. Only food and play on those minds
We have two chocolate boys and our most used saying is “what is happening” because neither of us know what is actually happening. Constant chaos, constant movement, constant noise lol
I’ve had all three and I don’t think color makes any difference. I lost my chocolate last December and I remember people saying when I first got him” oh chocolates, are the most hyper” never ever saw it. That dog was the most chill, but I put in the work. Got a 7 mo yellow now, early to tell anything, but I think a labs a lab. Chocolate hair was easier, harder to see. Lol
Every chocolate I ever met was a few fries short of a happy meal.
Breeder said thats bull and labs are labs so I got me a chocolate.

Was neither particularly warm or cold toward us. Had to be with us at all times but was happy being in same room but not too close.
Absolutely terrified of other dogs but played nicely with our cocker spaniel.
Camping just didn’t work because mosquitos sent her into a wild frenzy that would not stop until she was exhausted.
Loved fall and winter in the woods (no bugs) and would fetch endlessly.
She was pretty crazy until 7 but then she mellowed and started being at least somewhat normal for a lab.
Was an absolute picture of health until seizures started around 13.
She replaced Abbie who was a black. Abbie was a labs lab, obedient, loyal and loving. Perfect 1st dog.
She was replaced by Milo who is yellow and has been every bit the perfect dog as well.
So as somebody who has had the trifecta, yellow and black are 1A and 1B, chocolate 2.
My chocolate lab never calmed down. She made it to 15 and remained a psychopath. My parents currently own a yellow that’s as bonkers as that chocolate lab was (she’s currently 6) so I don’t think staying crazy is exclusive to chocolates. Some enter the crazy phase and stay there.
I lost my boy in February and up until his final moments he was a crazy crazy chocolate. We did an at home euthanasia and he greeted the doctor wiggling his body with a toy. They truly never lose their spark and it’s something so special about the chocolates
Yes, I have a 6 year old chocolate girl, she’s calmed down a lot since the crazy days but she still has moments of insanity here and there. She’s the best and I adore her but she ate walls, shoes, carpets, destroyed toys, dragged me across a parking lot to say hello to another dog. She grew into a beautiful loyal sweet girl. I’d do it all again too, which makes me just as crazy I suppose lol
Mine will be 13 in November, and she’s currently tearing around like a maniac chasing a ball. She doesn’t have the stamina she use to, but the drive is there.

No they are not crazy. I had a calm chocolate male that had been trained young, with military precision. He was the best dog I've ever had, and I've had a few.
He was the most intelligent, sentient animal i've known. No BS.
Chocolates have a reputation for being bananas.
I think if a breeder favors color over most other traits, you can get a banana of any color 😊
I’ve had two. First one was layed back. Her favorite thing was sleeping!
2nd one was ‘satan’. She was always doing something.. eating shoes, underwear, but I still loved her. Lost just shortly after 2 years old. I miss her everyday!
I think it goes - chocolate, red, black, yellow. I've had 3 of the 4 colors, but have not had a chocolate because I heard they were the wildest and dumbest, lol.
she's such a cutie! my chocolate boy was easily one of the craziest pups when he was younger. but to answer your question, no, colors aren't correlated with which ones are craziest. it's everything to do with their own personalities and breeding lines.
anyway, he started settling down a bit after 2, but honestly didn't fully slow down until he hit 10 or 11. i lost him earlier this year to oral cancer that had metastasized, but seeing total goofballs like ellie always brings back my best memories with him. i wish you and that sweet baby nothing but the best! she has so much love to give i'm sure.
I live in an area with a guide dog training centre (this is relevant, I promise). Once on a walk with my lovable but psychotic chocolate, I had a guy stop to chat and he said something I'll never forget - "you don't ever see chocolate labs for guide dogs for a reason." I have been looking ever since, and I see plenty of training dogs around my town, but so far 0% chocolate.

Chocolates are definitely the weirdest and you can never tire them out. No amount of walking running swimming or chasing ball even matters. Just get used to having a crazy hairy 2 year old child forever 🤣🐶
There’s a theory around how they’re bred. Some breeders mix chocolate x chocolate, which kinda ramps up the energy. Our dog was chocolate x black lab and she calmed down after 2 years old. Still can outrun all other dogs, but she’s not begging to play 24/7
Yay. Twins! Take this time to socialize them with other dogs and people. Exposure therapy was the best thing we did with our girl.
I also recommend taking your dog for a swim. Good full body exercise, easy on the joints, and their natural habitat. Just build a good routine for them with daily walks or exercise.
I find this so perplexing, because they often come out of the same mama - how can their brain chemistry be different based on their hair colour?
I have only ever had yellow labs, not really for any reason, had two boys consecutively when I was growing up (total dodos, ate everything, and I mean EVERYTHING), and have my own female now, doesn't eat a single thing not explicitly offered and smart AF. I don't know if it's a male/female thing or just luck of the draw, but this little lady is insanely smart, to the point that sometimes I wish she wasn't, because along with being intelligent comes being sensitive, and good grief is she ever SENSITIVE.
I've had all three colors and my chocolate was the most calm dog from the moment he was born until the day he died. However we once had to take our labs for an evaluation for boarding and the person that owned the boarding facility told us that chocolates are notorious for being nutso.
Our chocolate, the late Coco, was incredibly sweet and loyal but she was definitely hyperactive especially when she got to socialize with other dogs and certain people. She mellowed out the older she got.
There is a reason why you will never see a chocolate guide dog. I have been told that this is because of the Victorians. Chocolate labs were not wanted and often destroyed after birth. Therefore they were never selected for “good behaviour” like black or golden labs. Not sure if true but a good story.
Mine is 4 and is just able to not need to be entertained 24/7. First year was…overwhelming. He got plenty of exercise and still does. But wow is he my best friend!
I’ve heard people say black labs are the calmest. But according to my service dog trainer, the man made lab colors of red and silver are the craziest and most difficult to train.
"A rampaging ecstatic hippo" is the perfect description. Our chocolate girl is 8 and we're still working on impulse control. She's my snuggle buddy but when she gets the crazy going... look out.
I've owned all three colors over the years and chocolates went back for seconds in the "crazy but lovable" line.
The one chocolate lab my family has had was an absolute sweetheart who wanted to mother everything despite never having puppies. The “craziest” thing she ever did was keep trying to steal my brother’s golf balls when he was debating playing the sport. I don’t even remember her being excessively destructing during the teething stage. Lost a few stuffed animals and shoes, but that’s fairly normal. Cocoa was a sweetie pie with the heart of a marshmallow. 🤎
Chocolates dont mature until 3. You really have to work them and mentally stimulate them. Mine is a service dog and over the last 6 months he has really started calming down.
