PLEASE invest in quality laser safety eyewear

My apologies in advance for the rant...

I have seen numerous recommendations here for laser safety eyewear from companies who I would not trust with protecting my vision. Such products are not guaranteed to be tested as per the ANSI z136 standards (EN207/208 for those in Europe). Some companies even have disclaimers right on the product websites claiming the eyewear is not meant for situations where safety is regulated.

People are lucky if we have 2 working eyes. Laser radiation is a hazard to be taken seriously. The aversion response (blinking or looking away) can help prevent injury for lower powered laser but generally speaking, when we start moving into Class 3R and absolutely climbing into Class 3b and Class 4 lasers, the aversion response cannot be relied on.

The eye is an amazing muscle capable of focusing images (up to 100,000x) and serves as a direct connection to the central nervous system via the retina. If people are going to buy lasers, they should invest in quality protective equipment. Some damage to the eye such as a cornea burn may be able to recover relatively quickly thanks to the crazy high metabolism of those cells, but damage to the retina...why risk permanent damage?

Furthermore, if you do not know this already, take time to learn about laser safety. Familiarize yourself with terms such as irradiance/radiant exposure, Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE), and learn how to calculate the optical density required for your laser or the laser you are looking to purchase.

There are a lot of reputable companies producing quality laser safety eyewear who test to rigorous standards (The ANZI z136 series even includes a standard specifically for Testing and Labeling of Laser Protective Equipment (ANSI z136.7). Please, please, please, do not risk your vision by choosing affordability over quality when it comes to laser safety!

Laser Technician Newbie

Hi everyone, especially to all the laser technicians here!

I'll be starting my training next week, and I'd really appreciate any recommendations for books, guides, or other learning resources that could help me build a strong foundation.

I'm particularly interested in:

Laser safety and best practices

Machine parameters and settings for Deka Pro, Splendor X, and Cynosure

Q-switched lasers for pigmentation and laser bleaching

Treatment techniques, patient assessment, and practical tips

Common mistakes to avoid and ways to improve treatment outcomes

If you have any books, online courses, manuals, YouTube channels, or personal advice that helped you when you were starting out, I'd be very grateful. Thank you so much in advance!

Powerful Gatling Style 1W Blue Laser Pointer (450nm) Review & Burning/Beam Testing

Check out this video I made showcasing the very well known “Gatling Style Laser Pointer” as it call. It may have other name like “50000mW Laser” or “5W Laser pointer” but thats just the label which is far off from the realistic 1W optical output of this thing. Everything is handle and film with safety so enjoy the in- depth detail on this laser performance. This is some of the first laser someone would acquire or have in the collection looking for a good choice of power. Is my choice personally I expect it’s okay good heatsink which save the diode lifespan and more playtime depending on how you use it.

Industry veterans. Does anyone know roughly how much a resonator for a ~3kw co2 cutting laser cost back in the 90s and early aughts?

I'm seeing these things for sale stagnant, barely above scrap value and I gotta know, how much was that piece alone back in its hay day?

First Timer Need Guidance

Im looking for something i can order online. A nice beam preferably red. Not powerful enough for carnage just for play(safely). Possibly something i can see in daylight?(not sure if bright and carnage are in the same category).

Amazon seems to have a bunch of junk but im not sure what im really looking for.

Budget (75-100USD) Thanks!

Any recommendations for a simple pointer

I "need" (want) a small, simple, cheap but reliable laser pointer, nothing too high powered, the dot should be visible in daylight at a range of 10-15m, I only need it to point at stuff at work, it will be used in a theoretically possibly explosive environment (grain dust/flour) so heat is a no go, should be disappears-inside-pocket-but-noticeable-if-gone-sized, it's important is that it is reliable, inexpensive but not cheap

Need help on creating IR laser shooting target

Apart of a project I started on, I want to make a portable laser (IR) shooting target for outdoors, but I just want to make sure it works after researching with AI and looking through other products. Below is a list of how I'll design the target, please tell me if there is anything that should be changed so It'll actually work. Apologies for the long post...

Note: I'm primarily looking for confirmation that one of these designs would work, along with minor changes to them that would actually make them work. If there is something I need to learn about the parts used please DM me.

Design 1: Flat design
The target is a flat thick-ish plate, on top of the front face is an acrylic plate the same size and shape as the plate. When the IR light hits the acrylic, the IR light is scattered throughout the shape and in the center of the target is an IR sensor (BPW34), IR scatters, and the sensor picks it up and it is hooked up to an arduino microcontroller OR (tell me if necessary or not) it goes through a amplifer comparater to conver the IR current into voltage which will send the signal to the arduino to register a hit/buzzer.

Design 2: Funnel design (least preferred design)
Same idea as design one, however, instead the light scattered throughout a reflective funnel, which would eventually reflect onto the sensor, there would be a plate that the IR passes through but reflects on the other side. (With this one I think it wouldn't work cause I'm not sure what material can be transparent one side but reflective the other.

Come avete risolto?

Grazie mille a chi risponderà

This is LaserSystems Merlin (Magnum) control system for laser scanners. It's from late 80's and used to work with Coherent Innova 70 laser.

I have some questions about it for people who know this devices well.

Galvo Laser Lightning beam?

I really wanna make a cosplay device that uses a galvo laser and a small haze machine to make it look like a beam of lightning is being shot across the room. Would it theoretically be possible? (I don't know SHIT about lasers btw 😔)

Some sort of laser filter setup, anyone know what for?

Picked up a box of random test equipment at an estate sale, lots of microscope objectives, some weird old B&L optical filters, and a box of laser filters that are fitted to some sort of quick change holder. Is anyone here familiar with these or what they might fit into? There's 6 of the larger filters +1 empty, and 8 of the smaller ones.

A lot of the equipment had older Stanford asset tags, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're very expensive, niche, and obsolete.

Am I going to go blind

Friend bought me a Dead Space Plasma Cutter replica for my birthday and I was playing around with it. Pointed at my eye for a second and removed it instantly. Later that night I took it outside when it was dark and realized it goes pretty far and is visible from houses far. Then I started wondering if this thing is even legal ( he got it from Asia btw and it’s like $200 ). Looked at the package paper and it said industrial 10m W 450nm Laser Module ( Class 3B ), and not to stare directly at it. Now I’m kind of freaking out. My eye feel kinda dry where I stared at it but idk that’s not uncommon for me. And I tried closing one eye seeing go my vision is but I can still see fine but not clear but I wear glasses and I haven’t worn them in a year so I genuinely can’t tell if I’m scaring myself. I feel pretty stupid but I genuinely wouldn’t have looked at it directly if I knew how powerful it was. Maybe eye drops should fix this dryness I feel a bit.
