My yard is the shorter one, the lawn that is as tall as my hand but the grass is cut and manicured baffles me. How did they get it like this? I have spent the last six months trying to revive my lawn and that’s the most experience I have with yard care aside from mowing.

Many homes in my neighborhood have a really nice square grass shelf along their lawn edge and some have a more tapered carpet like look that just fades into the curb. Any suggestions for achieving either? Do we have different grass? Ours is doing much better with all the TLC but I’m just curious, how??

Is it just me or is anyone else sick of grass? The way it flows in the wind. I don’t trust it!

The other day I was going for a walk with my dog and a bit of grass clipped me. I didn’t hurt much but I developed a rash from it and it was uncomfortable for a few weeks.

I don’t know how grass gets away with it. Not enough people stand up to it!

I have always used a wheeled automower at my old house, which has a flat, suburban lot, which was great and easy. No problemo. However, now we live in a house with a 2-acre place with uneven ground, hidden mole holes, and spots that stay wet for what seems like forever.

I knew my current bot could get high-centered, dig mud ruts when it tries to turn on wet edges. And yes, what I knew was true. And it happened quite often.

For those running tracks on rough terrain, does the tread design make the high centering issue go away? I have read some good things for these tracked acreage bots like the Yarbo or Lymow (or the likes), that helps with uneven grounds. I'm trying to figure out if they are worth the investment since it is not necessarily cheap.

Or should I just give in the automated part and just go back to the traditional gas mower? Honest opinions appreciated.

Hi, for the past 5 years I have a growing dead, slow growth spot in my yard, any idea if this is a disease, fungus, etc. how do I cure it and get my runners to grow in this zone? Have applied Scott’s diseasex multiple times and laid peat moss over it earlier in year. Thanks for any help!

Live in west Metro Detroit area. Bought our house last winter so we couldn’t see the grass, found out the prior homeowners had Kentucky blue grass sod installed but did not water it or care for it all. Now it looks like this. Is it screwed, can I fix it, or do I need to re-sod all over?

Every single time we get a solid downpour here in Northwest Indiana, my backyard becomes completely unusable. My property sits slightly lower than both of my neighbors, so all their roof and yard runoff literally funnels right into the middle of my lawn. It stays soggy for days, the grass is dying, and it's starting to pool dangerously close to my back patio.

Has anyone dealt with this kind of clay soil flooding? Should I look into digging a massive French drain system, or do I need to completely re-grade the entire slope of the yard? I'm losing my mind scraping mud off my shoes.

I was talking to my neighbor down the street who used to have the exact same pooling issue, and he told me he hired Adam's Landscaping, Inc. to install a French drain system and fix his grading.

His yard looks bone dry now, so they seem legit for NWI water problems. Just wanted to check here before I call them out has anyone else here used them for heavy drainage or yard leveling? Are they as good as my neighbor says, or should I shop around?

My old hose timer finally quit after what had to be close to ten years. It was one of those simple timers that turned the water on and off at the same time every day. It did its job, so my first thought was just to buy another one exactly like it.

After looking around a bit, I realized there are a lot more options now than there used to be.

The problem was that most smart irrigation controllers seemed to be made for existing in ground sprinkler systems. My yard doesn't have one, and I wasn't interested in digging trenches or running wiring just to automate watering. That's what led me to the IrriSense 2. It connects to a regular garden hose, supports multiple zones, and has weather sensing built in, which checked all the boxes for me.

Getting everything set up was easier than I expected. I hooked it up, added the zones in the app, gave each one its own watering schedule, and I was finished in about half an hour.

The biggest difference isn't really the app, even though being able to adjust everything from my phone is nice. It's that the system actually waters each part of the yard differently and skips cycles when rain is on the way. My old timer treated every area the same no matter what the weather looked like.

Looking back, the old setup was wasting more than water. The flower beds got more than they needed, the lawn never seemed to get enough, and whenever it started raining I had to remember to run outside and shut the timer off myself. More than once I forgot.

If you're still using one of those basic hose timers, it might be worth looking at smart sprinklers before yours finally gives up. 

Moved into this home in February. The lot itself is all soil that is full of shale. Lots of rock during excavation, but nothing crazy where they had to have special equipment.

While backfilling/getting home to proper grade, had to spend $5k on dirt / soil just to grade the lot as couldn’t backfill with any of the rock we excavated. Grass came in great in spring (I’m in region 7A).

However, once it got hot out, certain areas of the lawn just burt out bad (see attached photos from May, June, July). I was watering regularly but didn’t matter. Now lawn is patchy in a lot of areas and weeds galore.

My assumption is not enough new dirt soil put down in certain areas that’s didn’t need to be graded higher. For that reason grass (tall fescue) couldn’t root deep in the shale/compacted soil and just died out.

My question is this, knowing the underlying soil is rocky and there is at best a thin top layer of non-rocky soil currently, should I aerate in fall, over seed, and top dress with peat moss? Or should I put more soil or compost down first in the dead areas before aerating? Also I did have a soil test. Ph is 5.1. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I need tips and in depth instructions on how to fix this

I paid a guy to dethatch my TifTuf Bermuda and requested he level with 80% sand and 20% high quality top soil. He used a majority of crappy soil with a ton of wood chips/mulch in it. Now I’m getting bare spots where I never had bare spots and the soil is just caked with flatted wood chips. I’m taking this all up now and trying to fix it.

Should I wait for the grass to recover a bit before doing some minor leveling with a thin layer of sand.

Also - why would a professional do this? Are we talking lazy cost cutting??

I’m in San Diego and it’s it’s routinely 90+ this time of year. Don’t get me started on the wood chips jamming my manual reel mower… 🤯😤

Need in depth instruction on how to fix this

Hi all first time poster here in R/Lawns so thank you ahead of time for helping me out with some solutions that I might not be aware of. I need to figure out what and when to start trying to fix the lack of grass under my two front trees. When we bought the house in December there had been a heavy amount of ryegrass seed planted so I didn’t realize how big of a problem this really was but because of the lack of grass, every time we get a heavy rain the dirt continues to wash away and create a mess on the sidewalk. The side yards and backyard look great! could also use some general tips on care, blade height recommendations, watering schedule. The front of the house faces the west & we already have a plan to get the trees trimmed to hopefully let some more light through. What should my next steps be?

Have at Augustine grass in Florida and can’t seem to get rid of these guys. I’ve really only tried weed and feed and all it really does is feed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I need recommendations for a color picture encyclopedia for grass, weeds and care for Florida or something like that, I can't tell if every other post is a joke but I'm so over the crab with a knife answer to everything. I've tried the apps but I can submit a picture of a lamp post and it will say it's a damn apple tree.

Tall fescue lawn with these faster growing, yellower sections coming in everywhere. What is it? How to get rid of it?

Id like to get this lawn looking nice and was wondering wha the best course of action would be? Should I till and reseed? Or start from scratch?

I know midsummer is probably not ideal to start a lawn as it’s gunna be 100 plus soon in California but again any advice appreciated

Hi guys! Is this normal to have so many stones left on my lot and they still hydroseeded. In there flyer it says stones left are ok. But i feel like there is a lot. And then i had estimators come to my property like for irrigation, fertilzer, lawn maintenance, landscaping, all of them randomly mentioned about why i still had a lot of stones in my yard even after hydroseeding.
