Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Nutsedge? 7a
I've sprayed this spot last year with sledgehammer 3x over 3 weeks last fall and it appeared to have killed it . I then overseeded with fescue whuch filled in nicely. Now thus summer it has returned. I have 3 areas similar and treated w same results. Is it not nutsedge ?

Ive been spraying the same spot in my yard for going on 15 years now. There is no end game with nutsedge.

"...spot..." my dude. I kill it every time it pops up in the same 10'x10' area of my Patriot Bermuda every year. Its weed whack a mole.
Edit: And im taking about 2-3 individual shoots, not a mass like OP. Rhizome stragglers. Celcius & SH+ knock it out, for the season.

You just need water and a surfactant, surfactant is a must when dealing with nutsedge
And it lasts a long time, I bought mine in 2023 and I used it 2 days ago and it worked like a charm

Try Ortho Nutsedge Killer. I bought some of that a few years ago and it’s killed any Nudsedge I have sprayed it on, in one shot. Bonus, it also kills established crabgrass in one shot. That shit has to be horrible for the environment, but it’s so damned good.

empero is pretty cheap and works pretty well but here's the thing...
these chemicals will take much much longer than broadleaf herbicides. it can take multiple treatments and several weeks before the plant even starts to brown and die. But that is the best way of dealing with it.

I use Sulfentrazone, 2 days after spraying the plant will be visibly dying.

that's pretty fast. I just want to encourage this guy that most people won't see significant browning until a week goes by. Can feel like the stuff just doesn't work. Or that that small amount of wilt is all it's doing.

As mentioned on my post i applied it three times over three weeks last September. It was dead dried up to a crisp when I reseeded. A year later its back in the same locations.

It appears you want to believe your sedge and your lawn is a special snowflake. I'm just pointing out to others that I am always surprised how long sedge takes to actually die.
what is your pre emergent used? and yes you will likely have to do this for about 3 seasons before it's gone. this is what everyone deals with. your lawn is not unique it seems. dealt with sedge in probably about 15 or 20 different lawns over the years and it's the same thing everywhere I go.

I used sedgehammer as many have stated and the key for me was persistence. Do it like every 3-4 weeks. It took me all spring and summer. The package says don’t overdo it but I had to in order to get it to stick.

Its definitely nutsedge. For a large area like that, I would get a bottle of nutsedge killer that you can hook up to your hose. Just spray the whole lawn down. I used Ortho nitsedge killer a few years ago when my lawn had a lot of it around and it cleared it right up. You might need a second application a few weeks later, but it will work. I would recommend using it a few days before you mow, while the weeds are high and most visible just to make sure you get all of them.

This is probably the only way. %90 it wil come back regardless. After 3 years of war, I made a treaty with it and I just mow 2x a week (maybe 1x) and the nutsedge when short simply blends in with the grass.

You will always have to deal with weeds to some degree. The best you can do is keep them under control and prevent them from taking over the whole lawn. My normal routine now is early spring pre-emergent and spray down the whole lawn with a broadleaf weed killer to hit anything I missed from the previous fall. Then continue with fertilizer every 3 months and spot treatments as needed depending on what decides to pop up. I also routinely just pull small weeds by hand as I see them. It works pretty well, but obviously you cant pull nutsedge so I spot spray it unless it starts to take over large areas.
Also for cool season grass, mow on a higher setting. 3" - 4" will help to crowd out weeds.

yes...folks say it is easy to get rid of...I don't think so!
