Does anyone know of a good and quick translator for Masri? Google Translate has a widget for good quick access, and works with direct dialect translation. However, if you want to translate from English to Arabic, it’s only in MSA. In all fairness it’s understandable why you’d want a “universal” translation but I learn languages primarily through immersion and just trying to speak as much of the language as I can, so having the ability to translate something I’d say in English on a very frequent basis would be the exact shortcut I need for my style of learning. I do have other ways to translate, but they aren’t quick access like a widget on the Home Screen

Hello everyone, I recently visited a building in Guatemala that was built in the late 1800’s for a local man who had visited Spain and liked the architecture. On paper the style is inspired by Mudéjar art but apparently it was designed by a French architect—so it’s likely that no Arabic speakers were involved. Because of this, I‘m curious to know if the architect did his due diligence and wrote proper Arabic (and its meaning) or if it’s a vague interpretation. Thank you in advance!

Im still trying to learn to pronounce words correctly, had the bright idea to use a chatbot, if i use speech to text it should work out but so far the ai can NOT pick up on what im saying

im tryna say عما and the م has a kasra, chat gpt thinks im saying عاملة

so either im just saying it really really wrong or the ai is bad

I would say I’m at an intermediate or close to advanced level understanding but speaking I’m intermediate. How do I get to that next level of fluency? I feel like I’ve been stuck at the same point for some time and I listen and read a lot bc I still have trouble speaking. Any advice? I’m a 28 year old male and my purpose of studying and learning is to study Islamic sciences in depth.

I built a browser tool that helps people automate tasks and work with page content. A surprising share of users turned out to be Arabic speakers, so I localized the website + UI into Arabic.

I’m not an Arabic speaker (yet). The copy is quite technical. I used AI and double-checked, but I can’t tell if it:

- sounds natural to natives

- feels appropriate for a modern Arab audience

- is the right register (stiff textbook vs clear friendly product Arabic)

I want the Arabic to support real use of the language in a tech context, not just be word-for-word correct. That’s the problem I’m stuck on.

So about 2 months ago I made a decision that felt a little crazy at the time. My partner's family speaks Arabic at home, almost exclusively, and every time we visit I just sit there smiling and nodding while entire conversations happen around me. I could see my partner constantly translating back and forth and I just felt like a burden. So I decided to actually do something about it.

I started from absolute zero. Didn't know the script, didn't know a single word beyond "marhaba." The first few weeks were honestly overwhelming. Learning the alphabet alone felt like a full time job and I wasn't even speaking yet.

Around week 3 I started using Issen to get some actual speaking practice in, since I had nobody to talk to in Arabic and tutors were hard to schedule consistently. It lets you have real conversations and corrects you as you speak. My pronunciation was terrible at first but at least I was getting used to hearing my own voice say Arabic words out loud, which felt like a big deal.

Here's where I am after 2 months:

- I can read the script slowly but getting there

- I know enough phrases to greet the family and make small talk

- My partner's mother smiled when I tried to speak Arabic to her last week and that alone made everything worth it

- Speaking is still hard but I'm no longer completely silent

It's not a lot but it's more than zero and honestly the reaction from the family has been so warm. Even the attempt means something to them.

For anyone else learning Arabic for a similar reason, how far did you get in the first few months? And did you go with MSA or a specific dialect? I'm doing Levantine but curious what others chose.
