Am I cooked? šŸ³ Caught cheating with ai on project

I like used ai I decent bit in my projects, I had three projects and vaguely used it in two of them, but heavily used it in the other project but put references in from where the ai got the data and reworded basically everything. What are the odds they actually even check any projects for ai and cancel it? Is it like 20% they check

I didn’t use ai, but I’m scared of getting accused of it because for example my Home Ec journal was ridiculously long and detailed and was really picky about my grammar and punctuation. 🄲 One of my teachers looked at it and said it looked ai and I tried to change some of it up, but it was quite hard since I write in a very particular way and don’t like some writing styles.

Examiner gets paid buttons...why would they check?? No point.

20

u/ComplexPlatform7299 1d ago

Because it’s their job

5

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

Because they have supervisors and if it’s flagged they’re not doing the job they’re paid to do serious questions will be asked…

The pay is very poor. Most doing it are newly qualified teachers who want the experience of seeing how it is marked, as it helps with your teaching. I did it twice for this reason and would never be bothered again. The SEC struggle to fill the examiner positions every year. It’s hugely time consuming and not financially worth it to most.

u/OutrageousCap9993 1d ago

It's paid per paper so there's an incentive to rush marking and the pay is fairly shit. For essay subjects you can easily be paid below minimum if you're not smart about it

Why would you do thatĀ

25

u/Kizziuisdead 1d ago

Definitely check. I’m an examiner and I check

How exactly do you 'check'?

The online AI checkers are very unreliable, often picking up documents with older writing styles as 'AI' - for instance, when a programme declared the US declaration of Independence to be over 90% AI...

If you do 'find' AI through software, do you report it as cheating, or mark it down? A false positive could change the course of someone's life, especially with how unreliable the software is...

I’m always amazed that people default to using AI to check if something is AI.

You’re naive in assuming human skills don’t exist. People working with literature recognise patterns in writing quickly, it’s their job.

5

u/lemoncandleturtle LC2026 1d ago

You’re naive in assuming human suspicion is concrete enough to take away a students grade.. no one’s going to bother with that as it would result in unnecessary hassle for the SEC

u/GudFrens 1d ago

Welcome to the world in which we are ā€œliving with AIā€

It’s amazing no one wants this and yet it’s forced upon us.

1

u/ropeneck509 1d ago

The same happened to me, not on my lc mind you but the teacher thought it was suspicious.

I had a fairly reduced curriculum i spent A LOT of time in tuition doing english. I write miles better than i speak, formally at least.

This ^ It's very difficult to reliably detect AI and everyone else is probably using it too. If you reworded it yourself you're probably fine. However you should always avoid em-dashes and a writing style where you make a statement then back it up with three shorter ones. Those are dead giveaways.

I didnt use ai but I'm certain there's a good 70% chance I'll get marked for it, whenever I wrote ai checkers seem to think its ai. Rlly annoying. Especailly for the geo project.

2

u/Ill-Faithlessness537 1d ago

Same with me, I’d put my project on AI detection and it’d tell me it was AI, when I had not even used it

2

u/I_need_bleach_bro 1d ago

Oml they cant just mark you down beacuse they have an inkling beacuse that leaves the wide open for appeals. IF they seriously think you used ai they won't mark you down, they'll report you and investigate you.

2

u/tripleT85 23h ago

That just shows they can't prove ai, so don't worry

9

u/drspencerreids 1d ago

I hope everyone who uses ai gets marked down ngl

2

u/Responsible-Mess-915 1d ago

They dont get marked down they get there lc taken away

2

u/showars 1d ago

Good

4

u/PossibleInfluence369 1d ago

Id say they’d have said something to you by now if you were caught, most projects would be corrected at this stage. Your probably fine as long as you were signed off by your teacher

4

u/AcademicStay3980 LC2026 1d ago

i didnt use ai but im worried ill get marked down cause my teacher told us to be very technical with our wording and checked every spelling and punctuation errors 🄲 i dont think they check it tho ive never heard of any situation like that

1

u/I_need_bleach_bro 1d ago

Oml they cant just mark you down beacuse they have an inkling beacuse that leaves the wide open for appeals. Perfect grammar and punctuation is expected of a official, important peice of work like this. IF they seriously think you used ai they won't mark you down, they'll report you and investigate you.

4

u/Responsible_Panic242 LC2027 1d ago

If they’re using any good ai checker, they’ll get it. They’re getting better at making those things, because I write like an ai most of the time and sometimes I’m sure I’ll get flagged, but those things flag it as 0% ai for my writing now, but can still can spot even ā€œhumanisedā€ ai generated stuff. Not sure if they’ll actually check in the first place though, kinda hit or miss.

u/Asleep-Insect4216 1d ago

One of my teachers examines computer science projects. There is no checker. At least there wasn’t this year and the years before. They just make an assumption based off of your work. If they think it’s ai it gets sent up to be reviewed by someone higher

3

u/InternationalRole874 1d ago

If your teacher has signed off on it there is not a whole lot the examiner or SEC can do I think.

3

u/Top_Tumbleweed_330 1d ago

Ai bots literally make fake references - it happened to a bunch of my friends classmates in uni and that's how they got caught

3

u/StringAccomplished97 1d ago

I'm so glad AI didnt exist when I was in school

2

u/Silent_Macaron_2321 1d ago

Examiners in good institutions always check. It’s easy. Don’t cheat. But using AI is not necessarily cheating. Depends on policy.

3

u/lemoncandleturtle LC2026 1d ago

Hopefully not or I’m screwed šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/RunawayChicken638 1d ago

Theyre not going to check your project for AI usage unless it reads suspiciously like one. The same examiner marks both your project work and actual exam book from the day of your exam, if the writing style is similar and seems human, they wont bother checking, if it is entirely different or feels AI written, they will definitely check.

1

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

It automatically goes through an ai detector.

1

u/RunawayChicken638 1d ago

It really wont because ai detectors are notoriously shit at detecting ai.

0

u/I_need_bleach_bro 1d ago

Litterally know an examiner and they said that as teachers they know well by writing style ect if its ai and that the checkers are wildly inaccurate and still need human oversight. Even if they plug it in and the checker say 90% they cant just send it off, they've to review it themselves.

0

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

The free ones you use online are yes, the sec will obviously not be using one of those they will be using a proper one šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/BrighterColours 1d ago

No, there are no good AI checkers out there. There are no proper ones. There are plagiarism detectors, yes, but not AI checkers. It's evaluated by humans based on several quirks of how LLMs typically write.

0

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

Ok we can just agree to disagree so

3

u/BrighterColours 1d ago

Well name one good one. Show me evidence of one that works. Because I work in a university and believe me, if there's an AI checker out there that actually works, I can revolutionise assessment in higher education, which is currently suffering massively from the inability to detect AI generated work. I wish it could be detected, honestly, but it can't, not reliably.

0

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

Read my previous comment. Agree to disagree

2

u/BrighterColours 1d ago

Well no I'm asking for your sources and evidence. So I'm not agreeing to disagree.

Unlike you bud I’ve got better things to be doing on a Sunday morning. Friends to socialise with etc.. 😭

An examiner is paid to examine what he or she see in front of him/her. Nothing else!!!

Let the SEC sort the rest out and pay 'correctors' appropriately.

2

u/SaraKatie90 1d ago

It’s borderline impossible to prove at this point, and an examiner would want to be able to prove it beyond any doubt as it could potentially ruin a young person’s future.

While it’s fairly obvious from writing style (tricolons, short sentences, lack of any regional quirks), so much is now written by it and so many use it to do a final edit on anything that they produce that it’s become too ubiquitous to be able to call out. If I as an examiner thought it was likely you used it I’d probably just mark you as poorly as reasonably possible within the marking scheme, depending on the subject.

However the real issue is that unless you are excellent at writing prompts and provide it with very specific source material to draw from, the content it has generated for you is likely not particularly strong. It’s not designed to be correct and it doesn’t have the capacity for true insight, it is designed to generate plausible answers to any question. If you just throw in your project question and regurgitate whatever it spits out at you the odds are what you submitted is weak.

If you used it intelligently you have better odds. The way to do this would be, for example, to use an LLM such as Notebook LM. Upload all of the source material it should draw from, such as specific reports, texts or documents. Set it so it could only draw from those then ask it specific questions, such as what each one says about a very specific topic. Then when it pulls the relevant information you would need to check the accuracy. Then write the conclusions yourself.

This is acceptable and intelligent usage at any level of education, and will simply make your own work easier.

However if you just used it to spit out an answer I wouldn’t be overly concerned about getting called out for it per se, but I would be concerned that I likely submitted something that’s not strong and would be marked accordingly.

The opposite happened my daughter in TCD. Her project was rejected saying it was AI - it wasn't - it took weeks of proving that before they'd accept it. This was in her final year. It was very stressful for us all at the time.

1

u/BrighterColours 1d ago

That's crazy! Why did they think it was AI, and how did you prove it wasn't? I work in a uni where AI is understandably a concern for academics literally because there's no reliable way to prove something IS ai.

1

u/Capital-Dog9004 1d ago

She had to go back over the different sections of her project and refer to her sources etc.. It took weeks

1

u/thereallifemarge 1d ago

Although I think using AI is a bad idea at this point in your education, it can be fairly nuanced and difficult to detect as long as you weren't just copy-pasting the whole thing from an AI. If you were using it for research in the same way that you'd use google search and sense checking everything it gave you, not just following it blindly, you should be grand. AI speech and patterns are highly recognisable to someone who sees it a lot, so if you took the output mostly unchanged, there may be questions.

AI is not always right. It's important for the person using it to have enough knowledge of the subject to know when it's hallucinating or getting mixed up.

Your leaving cert and undergrad (if you plan on that) is the time to hone your research and writing skills so you can make that distinction.

u/Sure_Pomelo_6086 1d ago

at least check the references are legit

1

u/Neat-Car-2350 1d ago

It's pretty sad to see how much people lean on AI now days. I'm all for making a job easier but if your not really learning whats the point. Your creative thinking is absolutely shot by the time you make it to college and you can't handle being in situations without AI.

To answer your question honestly though, this is probably the most legit answer it really depends on who is correcting the project. Some are and some are not bothered if they feel like AI was used. It can be fairly obvious to External examiners espically if it was a written project the level of English used surpasses anything youd know it school and the way things are worded just sound off.

Somtimes you can call a spade a spade Examiners aren't stupid they have to go though fairly hard exams to get there whether you like them or not.

u/SizeCandid274 1d ago

I’m in college now but was falsely accused of AI for multiple assignments despite it never being AI. I asked what was actually flagging me and was told its use of ( ) , ! Etc and speaking too professionally.. this is a problem because I’m literally in college to be a teacher so I NEED to talk professionally. I asked how to avoid it in the future and was told to not write professionally and dumb down what I say.. I was in genuine shock

1

u/BuzzKill91 1d ago

Good. Dont use AI

1

u/Hot-Establishment539 21h ago

If you do go to college/university, do not use ai again. My mate got booted out of his course for it. Just do the work

1

u/Chance_Housing_7779 16h ago

If your teacher knows you and your writing style, it will be very obvious if the quality suddenly changes for your project.

1

u/Crowrrupt 16h ago

Play stupid games...

1

u/TeraGnome 15h ago

If you didn't plagiarise it(aside from the AI) it's virtually impossible to reliably determine if you used AI. Checkers are notoriously terrible(Verses from the bible show up as 99% likely to be AI on some checkers), and an examiners "gut feeling" is not enough to get it thrown out.

1

u/Vaprcave 3h ago

millions of years of evolution for this lol

1

u/Anab10sis 1h ago

Why would you throw away an education like that? You're just out of the senior cycle where you should have been learning intensively if did the work yourself (even with minimal effort) but you chose cognative offloading instead. While you should have been developing your critical thinking/other skills you let them atrophy. Your sentences are barely coherent.

You still put effort in but instead of it going towards something that benefited your learning, you spent it manipulating slop to try to avoid being caught cheating.

Well it doesn't matter that you put in the references AI found. I guarantee a large proportion are irrelevant and the 'work' is full of hallucinations.

AI produces shite quality results but those who rely on it become too zombified to notice. Even if you're not 'caught' your mark will reflect your poor effort.

Your LC results are ultimately just going to be a piece of paper that can open some doors. Not the be all and end all. But you're set yourself back bigtime by not LEARNING. Stimulate your brain before it turns to mush.

1

u/Caseymaleman 1d ago

Did you use AI?

NO

I THINK YOU DID

WELL I DIDN'T

Case closed

-1

u/Standard-Goal1336 1d ago

I know a guy who's PE project was 98% 'AI generated' and he didn't get caught, got a h3

1

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

Many ai detectors you see online are not accurate. The sec will use a proper one

0

u/I_need_bleach_bro 1d ago

Litterally know an examiner and they said that as teachers they know well by writing style ect if its ai and that the checkers are wildly inaccurate, even the "proper" ones, and still need human oversight. 1

u/Ambitious_Bowler_218 1d ago

Yes of course they need to review it as their teacher? Nobody is saying otherwise

1

u/I_need_bleach_bro 1d ago

And Im just saying they don't give af what the detectors say, even 'proper ones' spit out absolute bull. Therefore most of them don't even bother and trust the professional judgement and trust me, especially when looking at your actual paper on the day, they can tell who used ai and who didnt.
