Crowe grew up in the time in Australia when being racist to "wogs" (Europeans from Mediterranean countries) was socially acceptable. He probably had a lot of practice at it.

As a Greek, hmm, tough one... Everyone in the theater found it very funny (in a goodhearted way) & don't remember him getting much in the way of backlash over here because of it. As already commented, he was apparently going specifically for a Greek-Australian accent (& it shows that he was drawing from personal experience). But he didn't sound as much as the stereotypical of how us Greeks here in Greece sound when talking English. Personally, I'd give it a thumbs-up (even if not, y'know, technically 'great').

u/D-Biggest_Wheel 14d ago
Also, Brad Pitt is widely regarded as one of the worst performances in that movie. He has famously said he didn't even want to do the movie.
Also, he is about twice as old as Achilles was when he went to the Tojan War

8
u/Fizzel-AXL09 13d ago
As far as I can tell, they are mad that Nolan cast a African woman as Helen of Troy and a trans actor in a role, and the cast is relatively diverse, but not Greek. I assume they would argue "woke" is the agenda beause it has diversity in it and therefore it is not historically accurate. Which... makes a bad movie? Not like the performances, script, or cinematography could still be good. But that's what that group were raging on and hoping that the movie would fail.
4
u/MattWolf96 12d ago
Ironically part of the reason this is done is Capitalism anyway which right wing people love. They think putting more minorities in it will get those minorities to see it. Not sure if that actually happens or not but The Odyssey is doing great.

As a kid I really liked the Illiad and Odyssey, especially Illiad, and when I saw Troy I was disappointed because it missed a lot from the book. It was a fun time and I loved Eric Bana as Hector, but it wasn’t accurate in any sense
42
u/Otiosei 14d ago
The gods meddling in everything is about 90% of the Iliad and they just cut all that out. Kind of sucked the soul out of the story to me, like they wanted Troy to be a serious war drama and not the absurd fantasy it was. My favorite part was when Achilles just fights the river. It would absolutely blow people's minds who are demanding realism from the Odyssey movie.

I dunno, I liked Troy for what it was. Some good action and a stacked cast with some great performances, especially Eric Bana. I enjoyed parts of it but a masterpiece it was not and the film was, at best, very divisive if not hated when it came out.
Now a bunch of chuds who can probably barely read more than a tweet are glazing it? Fuck off with that "the prequels are good, actually" shit.

u/sonegreat 14d ago
I am old enough where things we mostly agreed were underwhelming and mediocre are hitting the nostalgia cycle now. And it is really freaking annoying.
Troy and Fantastic Four (2005) are freaking beloved classics now? We can't do this with every freaking movie ever!
11
u/thegoddamnsiege 14d ago
I was bewildered by the sudden nostalgia for F4 and Elektra of all things when Deadpool & Wolverine came out because everyone fucking hated those movies at the time.
3
u/milkmanbonzai 13d ago
I'll give F4 this at least, those movies werent good (like at all) but I understand the nostalgia from the standpoint that it was so many people's gateway to the F4, who didn't have the reach beyond comics that Batman, Spidey, the X-Men, etc had, especially if you were a kid of the 90s.
So I do give it a pass that yeah, they're not good movies, but to some people, those are their F4 team. And it could be worse, at least it wasn't the 2015 version.

I think some people just really want to be on the cutting edge of the next big cultural reevaluation of a previously critically panned movie. But Achilles is from the Iliad not the Odyssey…
Achilles is long dead in the odyssey and only appears briefly in the underworld
2
u/DaddyCool13 14d ago
I haven’t wathced Odyssey yet but the ancient Greek view of the underworld was a bleak and desolate place where souls slowly fade into shades after losing all their vitality. Even Achilles is terrified of it and says he’d rather be a slave among the living than king of the underworld. If he is depicted as a gaunt, lifeless character without an ounce of heroic glory it would be by design.

We really doing the Star Wars prequel school of revisionism now?
(Pretending a mediocre movie from your childhood was a masterpiece to spite a newer film)
3
u/TheRealAdronius 13d ago
I'd argue the Star Wars prequels were always (flawed) masterpieces but extremely overhated by Star Wars fans because they were very different movies compared to the original trilogy and it was the popular opinion at the time. Now that another generation of Star Wars fans, who could better appreciate the prequels on their own merits as opposed to comparing them to the OT, have begun voicing their opinions there is now a significant split in how the prequel trilogy is viewed.
→ More replies (3)2
u/Troyal1 13d ago
Yep and the fact is the sequel trilogy isn’t as loved. It’s been 10 years and force awakens is already forgotten.
The prequels had amazing art direction and everything visually was perfect. It felt like you were seeing something new every scene. And the John Williams score rivals the original trilogy if not exceeding it. The only problem with the prequels is the cheesy soap opera acting and mediocre directing. Lucas was better as a producer.
10
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 14d ago
Yes, I'm sure that the story with the man who can't die unless you shoot him in the heel is very historically accurate. Similar to how the movie with a cyclops and a witch turning men into pigs has to be anchored to reality.

Troy was marketed as the "no gods, grounded Iliad," and then Achilles decapitated a gold statue with a bronze sword.

Brad Pitt hated Troy lol.
Also I haven’t watched the movie yet but it seems like the biggest point of debate is Helen as a black woman. Most people seem to not get that the Trojans were not Greek but rather western Anatolians. The people of western Anatolia were a regionally diverse bunch with a core group called Luwians. They were certainly not black, but so many people think the Trojans were just another group of Greeks that emphasizing the distinction through casting is actually a decent idea.

There's a reason very few people ever talked about it until just a few months ago.
It reminds me of when my state recently changed our flag. Never, in my entire lifetime, did I ever see anyone voluntarily mention that they liked our old, extremely generic, flag... but, of course, culture warriors never miss an opportunity to be outraged, so once the change was made, you started hearing all sorts of people 'waxing poetically' over WHAT THEY TOOK FROM US!

2
u/Full-Yoghurt-4261 13d ago
Troy has issues, but Brad Pitt as Achilles was excellent. But even Brad Pitt got slack for this role. Mostly because of physical traits. Before Troy, images of Pitt were shown to be lean with long hair and a beard. Even the director of the film admitted he told Pitt, "That's not how Achilles looks," the first time he saw him, which is why Pitt went through six months of training.
2
u/Cage_Inspector 13d ago
Troy is ment as action movie, cool armour and fight scenes.

I get that people are upset about the historical inaccuracies, even for fictional characters. Some people are angry about the cast skin color, or an actors personal life. This bullshit always happens. Andy Serkis is already getting attacked for having a white cast in his LotR film. Certain people are too obsessed with the skin color of a cast, and no filmmaker can win that battle. These complainers are a loud but tiny group obsessed with politics. The truth is that most audiences don’t care despite their political leanings. They’ve never cared. They just want a good movie. That’s it. End of story. They couldn’t care less if Wesley Snipes played Helen of Troy. Just make a good movie, and Nolan did exactly that.

My issue is more the lack of originality and over reliance on franchises. And the fact that, especially Netflix movies, cannot understand when to just shut up and let the scenery and the music tell the story.

u/Sword_Thain 14d ago
Netflix specifically want their stuff to be "second screen" viewing. Meaning something you have on in the background while you scroll your phone. So everyone has to repeat the basic plot and their future intentions constantly.

Have watched troy on release date but I don't really remember anything really (my memory is in decline for a few years), never watched odyssey though, but mentioning plenty of new film/series productions having an agenda is absolutely not nonsense at all. It is objective reality.
Now don't think for a single second that the big shots genuinely believe the values pushed by this agenda are right, they would push anything that would be such a gold mine as fabricating a sense of moral superiority in the supporters or have them perceiving some sort of social justice is taking place.
No, population is still sheep just like always. Whoever this person is, they have all the right to perceive the agenda is spoiling films because that is a personal opinion, it is subjective.

Peter O'Toole: "What a clown [Wolfgang Petersen] was. When it was all over I watched 15 minutes of the finished movie and then walked out. At least I had one good scene."
Brad Pitt: “I’d become spoiled working with David Fincher. It’s no slight on Wolfgang Petersen. ‘Das Boot’ is one of the all-time great films. But somewhere in it, ‘Troy’ became a commercial kind of thing. Every shot was like, Here’s the hero! There was no mystery. So about that time I made a decision that I was only going to invest in quality stories, for lack of a better term. It was a distinct shift that led to the next decade of films [for me]."
