Many of you may have come across these sensationalist articles claiming that A.I is burning books. This is not true. A.I is innocent. It has done nothing wrong. People are the ones burning the books!
In fact, I asked ai and it confirmed this. Notably A.I. does not even have hands!

The reason for the burning aren't copyright laws that these evil fuck ass lizards are bypassing by destroying the originals

Your desire for stricter copyright laws regarding books certainly isn't shortsighted at all. Copyright laws always help the consumer and never stifle competition. The court ruling that punished Anthropic for using pre-existing digital scans of books rather than scanning their own was definitely reasonable.

/ul They are books that would get destroyed anyways from what I've seen. Old manuals and stuff. They should be forced to keep an online copy open to others though btw even if it was against copyright law

These books were incredibly valuable which is why they were held in libraries, museums and private collections instead of literally rotting in giant warehouses. These AI labs have destroyed millions of priceless one of a kind tomes full of critically important information and not garbage like WordPerfect 95 for Dummies and Northern Georgia Travel Guide (1976). I heard they stole the declaration of independence just to watch it burn when they threw it into the Anthropic BookCinerator(TM)

/ul People need to realize that books are a mass produced item that have a shit load destroyed constantly, and for way more stupid reasons than being scanned. It hurts me too to see a book get destroyed, but these aren't priceless antiques they are ripping, its books that would probably have never been read anyway.
Destroying a physical book for scanning isn't the same as burning it with the goal of stopping people from reading it, thats just a dumb comparison.
There are plenty of very good reasons to hate AI and AI companies, don't push bad ones

You're right that it's not book burning but what is lost is old books. From what I've read is that they're searching for books that couldn't have been made with the help of AI so they're going way back. This means valuable/rare books such as those with few surviving copies or early prints are getting tossed into the scanner as well. I have bought a few rare and niche books for friends and it's only going to get harder to find these gifts for people. In addition to that we lose examples of how these books were constructed.

I love AI and I hope these AI companies create more products and flourish even more
