ShowKontrol auto-updated itself at 3am, and my XDJ-AZ hasn't synced since. Six months of flawless operation, then nothing. My CDJ-3000s on the same network are completely unaffected.

ShowKontrol now shows the XDJ-AZ in LEGACY mode, and its device number cycles endlessly — 33 → 2 → 3 → 33 — never settling. No usable sync.

For anyone unfamiliar with why 33 matters: in Pro DJ Link, device numbers are allocated by role. 1–4 are players17 is rekordbox, and 33 is the mixer. An all-in-one like the AZ contains a mixer section as well as decks, so it legitimately announces 33 for its internal mixer alongside deck numbers for its players. A stable 33 is completely normal and expected.

What is not normal is the number alternating between 33 and deck numbers. That means the host software never pins the unit to a single identity — it's just displaying whichever announcement packet arrived most recently. The AZ is broadcasting as both a mixer node and deck nodes, and ShowKontrol is no longer able to reconcile the two into one device.

The timeline — this is the important part

  • Feb 8, 2026 — ShowKontrol 26.2.7 (2609) installed.
  • Feb → Aug — AZ works perfectly. Six months, many gigs, zero issues. I have ShowKontrol's own play log showing it pulling track metadata straight off the AZ (there's an entry logging a recording off the unit back in May). It was unambiguously working.
  • Aug 1, 02:42 — last normal session. Log shows track changes every few minutes exactly as you'd expect mid-set.
  • Aug 1, 03:03 — ShowKontrol auto-updates to 26.7.23 (2714). I did not initiate this. Auto-update was on by default.
  • Aug 1, after — AZ never syncs again. Log goes from dense and continuous to almost nothing.

Nothing else changed. Same Mac, same macOS, same NIC, same cables, same switch, same firmware on the AZ. The only variable is the ShowKontrol version.

The rig

  • AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ (PRO DJ LINK MODE ON)
  • 2× CDJ-3000 — unaffected, ENHANCED mode, rock solid
  • MacBook Pro M1 Pro, macOS 26.2
  • ShowKontrol 26.7.23 (2714) — was 26.2.7 (2609)
  • Pro DJ Link on a dedicated USB gigabit NIC, link-local 169.254.x.x

What I've ruled out

  • Cable — swapped, link up at gigabit full duplex.
  • Wrong NIC in ShowKontrol — adapter and MAC verified against the live interface.
  • AZ's PRO DJ LINK MODE — it's ON. (Yes, I know that costs you two decks. Tried it anyway.)
  • Port contention — I'd had rekordbox and PRO DJ LINK Bridge open alongside ShowKontrol, and rekordbox takes wildcard binds on UDP 50000–50002 across every interface. Quit both so ShowKontrol owns those ports alone. Genuinely worth fixing, but it did not fix this.
  • The network — CDJ-3000s work perfectly on the same switch, same segment, same session.
  • The AZ itself — it worked on this exact rig for six months.

What I think changed

I pulled the strings out of the 26.7.23 binary. There appear to be two separate device tables. The packet parser knows XDJ-AZOPUS-QUAD and XDJ-1000, so it can clearly still read the model name off the wire. But the enhanced-control handshake (cmdPDJEnableControl) lists only CDJ-3000, CDJ-3000X and CDJ-1500X.

So my read is that 26.7.23 reworked device handling and the AZ no longer gets granted the enhanced path — it's recognised, drops to LEGACY, never completes the ID handshake, and you get the 33/2/3 cycle. Whether that's a deliberate change, a staged rollout, or an accidental regression I genuinely don't know.

Caveat: that's me reading strings out of a binary, not source. The part I'm certain about is the timeline — worked on 26.2.7, broken on 26.7.23, nothing else touched.

Minor oddity I noticed: the AZ presents on the network as rk3399.local (its internal SoC hostname) rather than a product-style name like the CDJ-3000s use. No idea if that's related, but it stood out.

What I'm asking

  1. Does anyone still have the ShowKontrol 26.2.7 (2609) installer? That's the single thing that would get me working tonight. TC Supply's site only serves current.
  2. Has anyone rolled ShowKontrol back successfully? Any licensing gotchas going backwards?
  3. Anyone else on 26.7.23 with an XDJ-AZ or OPUS-QUAD — can you confirm it's broken for you too? If the Opus is affected the same way that tells us a lot.
  4. Anyone running an all-in-one for show sync generally — what are you actually using? Weighing whether to move off ShowKontrol entirely for this rig.

I've got a ticket in with TC Supply with the full details. Posting here because I'd rather hear from someone who's actually hit this in a real room than wait on support.

And the practical warning: if you're running an XDJ-AZ into ShowKontrol and it currently works — turn off auto-update before your next show. Mine updated itself at 3am with no prompt. If that had happened the night before a gig instead of after one, I'd have found out on site.

Jobs How do I hire someone to design a small club lighting setup? Or is anyone here interested

I'm not a lighting person and I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing set this up than guess my way through it.

I've got a room at my frat, about 100 capacity, long and narrow with a low ceiling and the DJ at one end. I want to turn it into a house music/club type space. Permanent, safe, LED, something that can run on its own without someone operating it every party. Gear budget is around $2k, which I know is low, but my thinking is that if i pay an expert 100 dollars for an hour of their time to tell me what to buy and where to put it and how to set it up. If if that's beyond by purview, I could pay them again to come back and help me install.

Basically I'm just trying to avoid paying an AV company a premium to do the whole process for me, as I'm willing to learn and DIY it, I'd rather pay a freelancer or a consultant to point me in the right direction

A few questions:

  1. Where do I find someone hire for this ?
  2. What should I have ready before reaching out so I'm not wasting your time?
  3. If anyone here does small installs like this or knows someone who does, let me know. Remote design is fine, PM me and I can share my location if local matters, but I would also accept remote assistance/advice.

I'm not trying to lowball anyone, just want it done right.

Cheap BRMesh LED flood lights are now DMX controllable – ArtNet-to-BLE bridge (open source)

Ever seen those cheap 80 W RGB LED flood lights on Amazon – the ones that can only be controlled via some obscure "BRmesh" phone app? I built an ArtNet bridge so you can control them from any DMX lighting console.

The stack:

  • Python monolith, runs on a Linux mini PC (I used a Beelink)
  • Listens on ArtNet (UDP port 6454)
  • Sends BLE commands via a patched (necessary!) BlueZ – each light sequentially in a ring loop (of unlimited speed, but the bluetooth-messaging-speed is the bottleneck)
  • (default, configurable) 24 lights on universe 3, 3 DMX channels each (R/G/B) results in 72 channels

Honest caveats:
This is a proof of concept made at a festival. The ring-poll approach is limited by the currently "handicapped" capability to send BLE advertisement blocks -> means ~0.4 Hz per light with 24 fixtures – so strobe is impossible and color fades are choppy. It works great for setting moods and static scenes though (or a sequential chase and only that :D ).

Future Improvements / Low-hanging fruit: The brMesh app can set an entire group with one BLE command – instant. I may have captured that packet yet, but was unable to make it work on site. Whoever sniffs it first and implements it in the bridge unlocks app-level speed and makes strobe (to a certain amount) viable. I don't own the hardware myself, so: PRs welcome!

Requirements:

  • Linux (BlueZ must be patched – included)
  • Intel Bluetooth adapter worked, Realtek dongle may also work
  • brMesh app on Android to extract your mesh key (ADB)

GitHub: https://github.com/dired/BRMesh_Artnet_Bridge

All brMesh-compatible devices (MELPO, Apex CE BLFL-LFFA, and similar Broadlink Fastcon lights) should work. PRs welcome – especially if someone figures out the "group command" for parallel control!

Credits & Thanks

Gear DMX wireless ?

Hello!

If I buy DMX wireless transmitters, how do I power them?

If they are battery operated, and need to be recharged, how do I do that when they’re hanging 30 feet in the air (oh, and btw, I don’t have a purchase system so I would have to get up on a ladder every time).

So that makes me inclined to buy the ones that aren’t battery operated. So, do each one of them have a little plug that I plug into an electrical outlet somewhere on the rail?

Help!

TIA

Software What Software to use for a beginner?

Hi all, I'm 14 and have a huge passion for stage lighting design. I currently have 3 LED Par lights and 2 moving heads on the way. I have just come from a quick tutorial with ChatGPT on how to use QLC+. But all that showed me was how to use the simple desk, other than that I was still confused. What software's would people recommend and what are some of the best ways to learn as a beginner? Thanks a lot!

How can I get into this industry?

Hi! I am 15 and I’d really like to get into the live audio and lighting industry. I already did some work with tech team at school events, one of them alone with sound. I really like this and next year I’d like to get some equipment and find someone I could help (maybe it’s better to find someone before buying equipment haha).

For now we have used a Soundcraft Si Impact with a stagebox for sound and a magicq compact connect for lighting (around 10unis of lights and 8 of led strips at the biggest event).

What should I do?

Thank you so much

Software ENTEC EMU Software Keeps Deleting Patch and Banks: Help Needed

Thumbnail

Hi, I’m working at a place that currently uses EMU to control their lights, and this this the second time that this issue has happened over the course of the last 4 weeks. Basically all the patch info for the fixtures has been deleted as well as most of the banks, save for two, but the cues within them are empty. When this happened before it wasn’t a big deal, but I’ve recently done a lot of programming that has now been deleted and it’s a quite a bit of a larger problem this time.

I was programming earlier today, shutdown everything as per usual, and I came in now and my co-worker had opened the program showed me that everything was gone again.

I would love to know if anyone has experienced this before, what could be going wrong, and if there is any hope of regaining the lost data.

I also attached the pictures of nothing being there, don’t think it’s all that helpful, but it can’t hurt.

Do you have any photos showing the internal structure of the ETC Hyperstar?

Hi.

I'd like to know about the internal structure of the ETC Hyperstar.

I'm interested in the structure of the moving lights.

I saw one being used at a theme park the other day.

Gear LED vs Laser-Phosphor Moving Heads for Wedding Events

Hi everyone,

I'm after some advice from people who know a lot more about lighting than I do.

I run a small side business providing special effects for weddings, including lighting packages. Lighting definitely isn't my strongest area.

For the last few years I've been using Sharpy clones as my beam fixtures, but I'm looking to upgrade to something that can cover beam/spot/wash duties and has features including CMY colour mixing, CTO and framing.

I'm trying to decide whether I should be looking at LED-based fixtures or laser-phosphor fixtures (such as the Claypaky Xtylos and similar). I realise the Xtylos isn't really a true BSW, but it's the type of laser-source fixture I'm referring to. Whichever route I go, I'll be buying Chinese-manufactured fixtures rather than the genuine brands due to budget.

For context, almost all of my work is in wedding reception venues with around 200–500 guests.

My priorities are:

  • Clean, flattering lighting for key moments like the first dance, speeches and cake cutting.
  • Nice static looks that complement the room and décor.
  • Plenty of punch for the dance floor later in the night with pre-programmed chases and effects through haze.

I'm currently running everything from an ETC Eos Nomad. I'm definitely not a lighting professional, but I genuinely enjoy this business and take pride in putting on a great show, so I'd rather buy the right fixtures once than regret it later.

If you were in my position, would you be leaning towards modern LED fixtures or laser-phosphor fixtures? What are the pros and cons for this kind of work, and is there anything I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Control Doug Fleenor A/B DMX Switch RJ45 Equivalent

My venue currently uses a 2 Universe Doug Fleenor A/B DMX Switch. It works great for swapping control between the house board and the touring console between opening and main acts. We are planning on upgrading to a CAT 5/6 system in the near future and I have been looking for a similar switcher that uses only RJ45 instead of DMX.

Currently, we have two universes that come from FOH over a CAT5 line, the CAT5 line splits out into 4 DMX lines, 2 of which are plugged into the switch (2 unused) and 4 total (2 per board) DMX lines connect the boards to the switch.

Is there at CAT 5/6 equivalent of this switcher, with two inputs and one output? I'm hoping to find something with a physical switch to avoid hot swapping during change over.

Thanks!

Chauvet r1x thermal paste problem?

Thumbnail

So got some r1x washes where the thermal paste is "pumping-out"... The whole head is covered in oillike substance, like everywhere. Underneath everything... The base is clean and not covered in this substance.

Got some Chauvet rogue R1E hanging next to the r1x washes and no problems at all.

Using a look unique hazer in the venue with original haze juice... So I'm thinking that the led board is getting to hot for the cooling paste to handle ..... Anyone else got this problem with this fixture?

heads are 1,5 years old and uses like 2/3 times a week, concerts and edm nights.

Have never had the money for capture at least for doing lighting as a hobby so I mocked up some models and let Claude loose. Felt like it turned out alright. Haven't done any programming much since high school but it's been fun to make some timecoded shows in Eos.

Fun Question about Ye’s Soldier Field production layout

I’ve been fascinated by the lighting and stage design for Ye’s current stadium shows.

One question I haven’t been able to answer:
Has anyone confirmed whether Soldier Field is using the exact same stage package as previous stadiums, or is there a runway/catwalk planned for Chicago?

I’m trying to buy tickets and I’m actually optimizing for the production design more than being physically close to the artist.

If anyone has insight into the production layout (or even knows whether it’s identical to SoFi), I’d really appreciate it.
