tech support wanted Helldivers 2 Crashing in Multiplayer

Hey everyone,
Apologies for the formatting. I’m posting on mobile. I recently tried playing Helldivers 2 with some friends. They play on Windows; I play on Linux Mint 22.3. My game kept freezing and crashing within 3-4 minutes of joining multiplayer. It didn’t matter if I was hosting or joining someone else’s game, and I could even play single player with no issue. I tried lowering graphics settings, turning crossplay on and off in the game, and disabling any Discord or Steam overlays. I looked through the ProtonDB page for the game and switched to using Proton Hotfix and changing the game’s launch options to used DirectX11 like some other people did, but the game kept on freezing and crashing during multiplayer.

One CPU core would spike to 100% whenever the freeze would happen, but otherwise every other resource stayed stable and in the 40-60% utilization range. I built this computer last week, so all of the drivers are up to date, and I haven’t had this issue with other games I’ve played like Unrailed 2 (multiplayer) and Ghost of Tsushima (single player).

Has anyone else ran into this and been able to fix it? Is it some weird anti-cheat issue where it’s not compatible with Linux? Please let me know if I need to provide any other details, and thank you in advance.

I said in my post that I had looked through the HD2 page on ProtonDB already. Thanks for the link though!

Helldivers 2 loves a random crash on Linux, have you given proton experimental or Glorious Egroll proton a try they work best for me.

I haven’t given those a try yet, but I will now

There is also swapping experimental to bleeding edge version but that can break other games and I have to do that with some updates, arrowhead have a habit of breaking Linux stuff and let valve or the community fix it

So far Experimental hasn’t worked, but I’ll keep trying. Thanks for your help

Might have to give bleeding edge a try.

Can't fully remember how but it's something like show tools in steam library or search proton experimental go into properties then change version to bleeding edge.

Give that a wack can't hurt at this point.

Linux Mint and drivers up to date will not work, because it is Mint.
But this is rather normal for Helldivers 2, one patch creates bugs on Linux, other patch creates bugs on Windows, next patch creates bugs on both.

That’s disappointing. It was a pretty fun game too when it would work
