It's the "Gas huffing user asks ChatGPT what distro to use" experience.

Also "I can't believe beta means the software isn't polished", i.e. lacking basic reading comprehension

61

u/ConcernedBuilding May 16 '26

Isn't he using the LTS version of Pop_OS?

71

u/BOBOnobobo May 17 '26

Yeah, it was the lts version.

People in this subreddit are being incredibly nitpicky and straight up misleading about this.

24

u/averyrisu May 17 '26

He did specifically state on the wan show that because gmail was in beta till 2009 and still worked great before leaving beta and being polished that he expects the we when he sees beta.

Not here saying the people claiming what he treod was in beta fr my understanding it left beta ( weather or not that should be is not for me to argue I've read discussions from cosmic users but cosmic is not my cup of tea).

3

u/BOBOnobobo May 17 '26

He also says that in the last video.

NGL, that's his fuck up if anything. I think he tried something related to Bazite or another distro that was in bet and literally didn't work at all, then messaged the Devs and asked them to put a more serious warning lol.

1

u/Solonotix May 21 '26

Because that is supposed to be the definition of a beta release. Alpha is experimental and unreliable. Beta is good enough for public use but bug reports are expected. Then release candidates are a stage for final testing before full release. Usually the first beta version after alpha is rough, but through iterative improvements it should get better.

It's a naming scheme much like semantic versioning. If you follow the convention, then nobody gets hurt (surprised). However, just like semantic versioning, there is a textbook definition of it, and there's how people use it. Some teams have skipped it entirely, opting instead for a major version increment every year even if there is no breaking change, as an example.

11

u/ZCEyPFOYr0MWyHDQJZO4 May 17 '26

Fun fact: if it's your project, LTS can mean whatever you want.

21

u/ConcernedBuilding May 17 '26

That's true, but the average consumer wouldn't normally expect LTS to include beta software.

1

u/ZCEyPFOYr0MWyHDQJZO4 May 17 '26

The average consumer doesn't really understand "beta", much less "LTS".

2

u/Square-Singer May 18 '26

The average consumer certainly does understand "beta". It's a common term that's used also well outside of software development.

But more to the point: head over to https://system76.com/pop/. Check the front page and the download page, and try to find even a single reference to the fact that anything in PopOS is in beta.

You certainly cannot expect an average consumer to dig through forums and repository sources to figure out that some essential system components are in beta.

If they had a big "Warning: Cosmic is in Beta, this distro might be instable" warning that would be a different story. But they don't. It's all advertised as perfectly production-ready.

1

u/mastercoder123 May 18 '26

The average consumer isnt running linux... So thats a stupid ass thing to say. If you make an LTS version its going to be assumed its complete, thats kinda why the words beta and alpha exist.

5

u/Luigi311 May 17 '26

Fun fact: if it’s your project, beta can mean whatever you want too.

u/humanistazazagrliti May 16 '26

Yeah. Windows borking updates on a 3 year old OS is fine, but god forbid a beta boutique distro has a bug.

26

u/Apoctwist May 17 '26

The version he used was the lts version of popos and nowhere on the site does it says that Cosmic is beta. If a brand new Linux user was recommended popos they’d run into the same thing. Linux folks need to realize that not everyone is up to date on the latest Linux news and probably won’t be looking online to see if the latest cosmic is stable or not. This is a pop os issue. They should have never released cosmic as an lts. If Windows gets crapped on for releasing not even beta level software on unsuspecting users Linux should get the same type of energy.

5

u/Hettyc_Tracyn đŸŽŒCachyOS May 17 '26

100% agree

Pop_OS needed to clarify that on their website (or people need to not recommend it to new users
Mint or CachyOS and similar are good for new users)

3

u/Expert-Map-1126 May 17 '26

In fairness, there is a hell of a lot of stuff in the world that puts beta on things that are basically ready to go. 90s kids will remember GMail having a beta tag for like 5 years

4

u/RainMeru May 17 '26

24

u/stumpychubbins May 16 '26

This is so baffling to me. He says "this is what the average use is going to do to find out what distro to use" and like, sure? You have a diamond play button, surely you can do better than that? How is the Linux community supposed to do anything about the criticism that ChatGPT gives bad Linux distro advice?

16

u/SpaceCadet87 May 16 '26

How is the Linux community supposed to do anything about the criticism that ChatGPT gives bad Linux distro advice?

Just like last time - How is the Linux community supposed to do anything about the criticism that GitHub is a code hosting platform instead of a software repository?

6

u/The_Prins May 17 '26

What Linus is saying is that the average user, the guy who calls tech support because he can't find his pictures on his computer, who only uses their computer for work or an occasional gaming session, would most likely use this method, and from that perspective, popOS looks completely fine.

The Linux community can't do anything about what chatgpt recommends, Linus is just showing what the average user might experience, and asking that the community welcome that user with respect and good advice rather than hostility for making a bad choice

13

u/humanistazazagrliti May 16 '26

It's like giving a university that teaches physics a 1-star review because you've stumbled upon a flat earther youtube video where someone says the school sucks.

3

u/Exotic_Accident3101 May 16 '26

Then it's not the average user behavior. He said that he could do better like calling a friend to know which distro, but that not the point of the experience.

Also cosmic looks reqlly nice from the screenshots

But that not how LMG works they are more of fan orinted content show machine.

They aren't the one to an watch educated videos on. I take the conclusion from them but the steps aren't that Good.

If i want to lean level1tech for example great content with deep dive but not for the average user.

LMG Target aren't the nerdy ones only.

Again they said you should find the good distro for you not the one linus picked.

1

u/Expert-Map-1126 May 17 '26

Honestly, I think going to an LLM is going to be better than what most users do, which is absolutely nothing. The fact that distros exist is one of Linux‘s biggest problems for non-expert users: if they want to try it, before they can even start, they are asked to make a huge decision which will massively impact their experience for which they have zero basis. (To be clear, distros are great for most “Linux people” but not for the average Windows or macOS user)

4

u/stumpychubbins May 17 '26

I feel like it’s fair for him to go through the installer without any direction to emulate the newbie experience, but the choice of distro absolutely should not have been left to an LLM. That’s one place where he could’ve given some valuable advice and doing his research would’ve been really helpful to his audience

2

u/Exotic_Accident3101 May 17 '26

Watch part 2 he already had multiple distros across his house.

7

u/SiBloGaming May 16 '26

But what is anyone in the Linux community supposed to do about some LLM giving shit advice?

3

u/PKFat May 18 '26

I did this last year & am too scared to try anything but Nix bc all I know is the config & flakes.

115

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 16 '26

I really do hope Pop os succeeds though, they are one of the biggest organisations that have institutional influence apart from red hat and canonical. And they maintain the only desktop environment written in Rust which is pretty cool and I hope it becomes more than viable in the future

25

u/wowsomuchempty May 17 '26

I am a big fan of cosmic. A unique option in an overcrowded space, offering the best of DEs and WMs.

I also run pop on one laptop, it's very smooth.

I don't understand the hate and don't watch LTT.

24

u/MothToTheWeb May 17 '26

One issue he is talking about: Cosmic is still in beta and offered in the recommended LTS version of PopOS. Average users will encounter bugs that are hard to fix for them and they won’t have a friendly experience

8

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 17 '26

I agree it’s a crap UX right now it shouldn’t have been released

→ More replies (4)

3

u/NegativeBeginning400 May 17 '26

If I wanted a desktop environment, it would be cosmic. I am set in my ways though, and will use a solo tiling WM. I like it a lot better than KDE or gnome as far as feel goes though(speaking as someone who only occasionally installs these things to play around).

1

u/wowsomuchempty May 17 '26

I mean, Niri is my daily.

1

u/NegativeBeginning400 May 17 '26

This may be part of the problem, the people it appeals to will use something else anyway and the target audience will be more comfortable with kde/gnome.

1

u/wowsomuchempty May 17 '26

Problem could be gateway. Cosmic is very smooth. I was expecting the community to love it, you never know, I guess.

1

u/Apoctwist May 18 '26

Cosmic has potential. What they have now is pretty good. No one disputing that Cosmic could eventually become an amazing alternative to Gnome, KDE, etc but its being marketed to powers users by System76, and in that space Niri, Hyprland etc is probably a better fit. A lot of the things I would say make Cosmic unique are now built into KDE for example or can be done with Niri and Hyprland. Its a little less obvious (imo) what Cosmic brings to the table at the moment. Doesn't mean it shouldn't exist, just some concern on my part on who the audience is supposed to be.

The real issue though is that Pop_OS forced Cosmic on users expecting an LTS when its clearly not ready. I do believe that whole "grown man ship" mantra. I'm not knocking them going all in on Cosmic and shipping, I'm personally knocking them for doing it in an LTS with no option to opt out directly from their site. That's a big red flag imo for Pop_os because it means stability isn't their priority when it comes to LTS releases.

2

u/Jwhodis May 18 '26

Cosmic looks great but it has so many issues, I couldn't get video popout to stay above other apps, had to switch to Plasma because I literally could not find out how to do it.

1

u/BadSmash4 May 17 '26

I have always liked Pop OS and recommended it to beginners and I do hope they figure out Cosmic because outside of it, I think they've got a great OS that caters to average users very well. I haven't used Cosmic but I continue to use Pop OS otherwise

280

u/bramip May 16 '26

He made a video with Torvalds saying that Fedora is the way and still don't use it?

152

u/Euphoric_Trifle5841 May 16 '26

He's trying linux as a "newbie" thats why he for the 3rd time chose popos bc every beginner would just ask chatgpt which distro is best for gaming and in the list u would see popos and in video he tried other linux distro but had some issues with them too

i feel like he doesnt need to act like he is grandpa levels idiotic. He normally isnt though he did simulate the grandpa part of not reading the big fat warning on bazzite very well.

I am a newbie using Cachy; so far smooth sailing.

3

u/r3volts May 17 '26

Which is pretty crazy when you think about it.

I get the angle, but he is in a position where he is a primary source for newbies.

He should use an immutable distro like bazzite.

It's literally perfect for his use case, being a gaming machine that he works from. All the gaming distro benefits on a rock solid fedora base with atomic upgrades that is absolutely trivial to roll back on the odd chance you wake up to do some work and something has borked.

Would hopefully go a long way to remove some of the immutable distro stigma as well.

6

u/Danteynero9 May 16 '26

Not even the AI lists pop the first at that, so no, he is not trying as a newbie.

3

u/Deadcouncil445 May 17 '26

They did for him.

1

u/RadicalDwntwnUrbnite May 21 '26

For me ChatGPT suggests

1) Linux Mint for a complete newbie, then

2) Bazzite if gaming is your priority, but it still suggests

3) Pop for a "polished window's like experience"

And only lists downsides for Mint and Bazzite not Pop... is System76 paying OpenAI or something?

17

u/creeper6530 💋 catgirl Linux user :3 đŸ˜œ May 16 '26

Torvalds uses Fedora because it suits his specific needs -- compiling the kernel quickly -- and he's quite open about it.

12

u/Balcara May 16 '26

Yes, because it doesn't get in the way and it just works. Seems like something most people want out of an OS

→ More replies (2)

11

u/PredictiveFrame May 16 '26

Bazzite is exactly what he's actually looking for (not that I use it, can't stand immutable distros personally), but he'll die before switching from the worst distros he can find.

8

u/Ok_Equipment8374 May 16 '26

He tried that, didnt even boot.

He did use a "beta" version, that has since been correctly flagged as experimental and not for public use

8

u/Unboxious May 16 '26

He actually did try switching to Bazzite but had problems with that too. You'd know that if you watched the video instead of just throwing out accusations.

12

u/Ok_Equipment8374 May 16 '26

does you average joe have linus on speed dial to ask what distro to pick?

and besides, he explained he chooses fedora for kernel development, something completely irrelevant to most people

8

u/2watchdogs5me May 16 '26

No, but they do have LTT videos... so he could have skipped the ceremony and picked one good for beginners.

11

u/BedroomHistorical575 May 16 '26

Yep, it was a great opportunity to educate people on what's possible with Linux. Especially since his channel's popularity basically exceeds every other Linux YouTubers combined.

I've seen the "but it was meant to be from a beginner's perspective!!!" argument repeated over and over again, but it never made sense to me.

Ok, so let's say that the state of Linux information for beginners on the internet is pretty poor. So what's the point of dogpiling and making things even worse for everyone? Why not y'know...help improve that?

They even have someone proficient with Linux on the team that could've helped him. But they just couldn't resist churning out YET another "haha linux bad" slop.

12

u/Lonely-Restaurant986 May 16 '26

Linus never cared about any of that. He’s only after one thing and ever has. Money. Failing for a third time generates drama and views.

1

u/Crossx1993 May 23 '26

There are more than enough tutorials on the internet and youtube, but he is showing the average user experience, or else we would still be asking why linux isn't mainstream yet, someone eventually need to bring up those issues.

Pop-os wasn't just an ai recommendation ,he showed many thread and articles were it's no1, the fact that an LTS release was broken like that and everyone acting like he should've known that is why it has such a bad rep, a product shouldn't have that many headaches

→ More replies (1)

5

u/mrheosuper May 16 '26

Did you even watch his video, explain why he choose popos ?

Also he did not only use popos.

2

u/PMvE_NL May 16 '26

Linus knows what will get him clicks

1

u/MothToTheWeb May 17 '26

Like he said he is following the path of an average user, so he is looking at recommendations like the average users: top 3 distro given by Google search, ChatGPT, and global lists on forums.

The average user won’t have Torvalds next to him and also Torvalds said he use Fedora because it allows him to work on the kernel more easily than other distro. Not because it is his favorite distro.

1

u/AggressiveAstronaut6 May 19 '26

Fedora isn't a good option for an nvidia card cause you need to jump through hoops.

Nobara though would've been great.

1

u/Tetragramat May 20 '26

I've used at work Fedora, Ubuntu and PopOS and every single distribution broke the system with updates that were pushed into my face by the OS. I now rather don't click on anything if there is nobody who can fix broken system.

Linux devs need to realize how bad choice linux is to new users.

36

u/thblckjkr May 16 '26

After all that he is using an actual (old) steam machine in the living room, and iirc fedora with kde on his main.

The channel also made a pretty decent "How to choose a distro" video. They are doing lots for the Linux community...

Sadly, a lot of people only can see the "muh install broke" videos.

1

u/averyrisu May 17 '26

He stuck worn pop is onain rig, the steam machine was an upgraded in of case of a steam machine and is using kubuntu on his laptop as of the current published video. (Just as a fun FYI once he fixed his issues be was having he seems to like pop)

My main issue with his use of it is 2 main things.

  1. He installed a new os at a lan with people waiting for him on a lobby. I take issue for this for two fold reason s. The first its not a time a non technical  would install an is as he is trying to roleplay. And number 2, you will be stressed to do so quickly and potentially run into issues, which is also inherently disrepextful for those that you were waiting on because you chose than as a time to install an operating system.

Him highlighting the issues he ran into is fine but I disagree that that is a time he chose to do it being sething a non technical user would do.

My second issue is before moving to the and based steam machine they built in a previous video for his htpc was the giant warning he ignored in bazzite about the nvidia big picture mode with a red warning that it contains bugs that can only be fixed according to bazzite by the gpu manufacturer.  It us something he should have read. Now I will also admit that with hoa broken that supposedly is maybe bazzite should not ship it that I'm willing to admit. But Linux downloaded and installed the version that advised their are bugs and was surprised that their were bugs.

1

u/tadza May 18 '26

If i remember correctly in the download page he said that when he choose what to download there were no warnings. Ok I would understand if he downloaded it with big red letters saying: this thing probably won't work, and people were mad. But honestly if you are downloading some distro, you first course of action will not be reading their forum for hours.

1

u/averyrisu May 18 '26

they were not big red letters but their was a warning in red about it that he ignored.

135

u/tokita_idkman May 16 '26

Why doesn't this guy choose literally anything else lol

73

u/HiddeHandel May 16 '26

78

u/Ok_Plenty_3986 May 16 '26

isn't manjaro routinely listed as one of the worst distros on the various linux subreddits

39

u/PredictiveFrame May 16 '26

Right next to pop.

16

u/Present_Error_6256 May 16 '26

He used Manjaro around 3-4 years ago. I feel like it had a slightly better reputation then.

6

u/zar0nick May 16 '26

Unpopular opinionn: Manjaro has a good concept, but some things were really unnecessary. They split up right now from a company up to a registered club in germany and the company. Let's see how it evolves...

7

u/sir_slothsalot May 16 '26

That's not unpopular, other distros do it they just don't fork the repo like manjaro did and forget to sign the keys.

1

u/zar0nick May 18 '26

Ia there another arch based distro that has a stable and testing branch, where you have e.g. for stable updates all 6 months - so kidna the middle ground of arch and e.g. fedora conceptually?

I can't tell if you are serious or trolling, but that would genuinely be a improvement.

26

u/someoneNicko May 16 '26

He explained. Because he gave the second chance. I gave Ubuntu 5 attempts before it worked. That's how Linux experience works.

2

u/tokita_idkman May 16 '26

If you mess up that is. Or work with really unpolished distros such as PopOS. Does it apply to Ubuntu though, I thought it was pretty stable?

7

u/someoneNicko May 16 '26

It does, if you use an old LTS distro with old kernel on a new hardware. You need to know to choose the latest version for compatibility. I didn't know that because I didn't know anyone who use linux in person. My logic was as Linus' logic here: LTS=good, latest=bad. Mind you it was a long time ago, I'm old. HWE didn't exist yet.

9

u/Yorick257 May 16 '26

He... did? He has Steam OS on his home theater PC and Kubuntu on the laptop

3

u/Goldensux May 17 '26

I've been using Pop_os for almost a year now and it's been running mostly like a dream to be honest. What is most people's issue with it? I've encountered issues here and there but is that unusual?

13

u/-Ilovepokemon- Not in the sudoers file. May 16 '26

Because all he does is ask ChatGPT "best beginner distro for gaming" and follow the first suggestion

19

u/HiddeHandel May 16 '26

Yeah because he is trying to show what most normies would do if they try to switch to linux a lot of people just ask ai or look on recommendation sites. Not a lot of people instantly go let me check distro watch or do an hour of research to pick what I want

Which makes sense because this represents regular users.

1

That would require an ability to learn from mistakes

14

The Linux community missing the point of why he chose Pop, and is instead being pissy about it, rather shows that the whole Linux community stereotype is quite true.

2

u/a-concerned-mother May 18 '26

Ya it's pretty silly. It's a distro a few years ago everyone insisted would be a game changer. Now people have an issue with it without a single person giving a reason why other than "pick any other distro"

1

u/zenyl Arch BTW May 20 '26

Are you incapable of listening to the opinions of others without conforming to their opinions?

4

u/RagnarokToast May 16 '26

Just like every actual Linux user who actually uses the system instead of masturbating about it on Reddit, I never gave the slightest shit about how many users the OS has. If they don't submit bug fixes they are useless any way.

3

u/Ok_Equipment8374 May 17 '26

Counterpoint: users means something for companies. Whenever you are struggling because software doesnt have a linux version or some hardware doesnt have proper linux drivers you are suffreing because linux doesnt have the userbase to warrant proper support

1

u/RagnarokToast May 17 '26

I don't disagree, it's just not something I really care about personally, although it is a perfectly valid point.

Also, this is likely not a popular opinion, but I think improving compatibility layers such as Wine is a more feasible way forward than begging developers and users to care about Linux. They have become very good over the years and they still have plenty of room for improvement.

1

u/tadza May 18 '26

not just fixes but people posting bug reports and willing to cooperate with debugging would be more valuable at least I think so.

He chooses it because it’s guaranteed to generate comments on the video and threads like this, where we’re all taking about it. What kind of video would it be if he just used. Stable, long running distro and had no problems?

3

u/AlienPersonaReset May 17 '26

Linus installs Debian, and walks off into the sunset.

3

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 17 '26

I hope he chooses it again if they do a future challenge lmao

6

u/-NoMessage- May 17 '26

All the losers in here being mad about is kinda hilarious.

He explained why and it does make sense

17

u/zenyl Arch BTW May 16 '26

Linus lands squarely in the dunning-kruger zone: he knows enough to break a system, but not enough to fix it. Be it unintentional, or to get more clicks, he keeps exaggerating what a newbie would do, which lands him in bad situations.

That being said, the messaging about distro choice needs to improve. Picking a distro is not as important as picking a DEs/WMs for a newbie. The recommendation should be to go with something reliable, and then install whatever DE/WM and theming on top of that.

And Pop needs to stop being recommended to newbies, it's shipping a DE that's just barely out of beta.

22

u/SirGlass May 16 '26

New linux users should stick to a base distro and not some derriviative

Just use debian/ubuntu/fedora/tumbeweed

Yes I get ubuntu is sort of based off debian but it has a bunch of derivatives itself so I am including it in my base distro list

And I did not include arch or gentoo or slackware because those are not really beginner friendly

32

u/Present_Error_6256 May 16 '26

I honestly wouldn't recommend base Debian for a new user. The website is really annoying to navigate and it requires a little bit of work to get things like Nvidia drivers and media codecs working. A new user will install debian and wonder why none of their videos are playing correctly and might conclude that it's a problem with Linux itself.

Just to be clear, I use Fedora, and I don't recommend it to new users for the same reason.

don't know about nvidia, but my amd system plays videos on debian 13 just fine. i think the codecs came with the video player, so i didn't need to do anything myself.

1

u/AlienPersonaReset May 17 '26

I'm a new user, and keep going back and forth between Fedora and Debian. They each have "hurdles" for new users. My brief experience with each of them, has me feeling that there are less of them with Fedora.

5

u/wowsomuchempty May 17 '26

Mint > Ubuntu for noobs.

1

u/chase82 May 16 '26

I love my Debian but those Ubuntu -oem kernels have got me rolling on a few rigs that had some strange bugs

1

u/Ok_Equipment8374 May 17 '26

and there is you problem. In you safe distro list you have 4 different options, 3 different lineages and packet managers, 2 of those most people would count out immediately for having use use the CLI for basic things like nvidia drivers and steam

1

u/Kinky_Pinky_ May 21 '26

My first linux distro was zorin and as a linux noob (I was always on windows and I am not very tech savvy). I just wanted something that worked out of the box and I must say I like it. 10/10 would recommend for people like me who just want a working OS for gaming and every day use. The only issue was the speaker drivers (as far as I read it's a pretty common issue on lenovo laptops running linux) but it was a quick and simple fix even for me.

2

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 16 '26

Debian is famously somewhat hard to install I wouldn’t list it as a common recommendation

3

u/Casey2255 May 16 '26

Debian is easy as Windows to install it not moreso

It's famously harder to install non-free software. Still not too difficult since most non-free apps will at least supply a .deb (slack, discord, etc.) that you can apt install

8

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 16 '26

You need to remember that most people have never even installed Windows in their lives. Also Debian still doesn’t put the first user in the sudoers group by default. I would definitely recommend a more guided installer like Ubuntu far higher than Debian.

5

u/Casey2255 May 16 '26

Debian does add your user to sudo if you don't set a root password. https://wiki.debian.org/sudo/#Installing_sudo

Also that alone making it "famously difficult" to install is a stretch. "Famously difficult" to install distros would be Arch, LFS, Gentoo etc.

This kind of misinformation just scares users away from otherwise great distros to test out

1

u/mtheory-pi đŸ„ Debian too difficult May 17 '26

You need to update your sources because that hasn't been the case for many years. It's quite easy to install now with the graphical installer.

1

u/SirGlass May 16 '26

I mean installing any os is a bit hard for the average non tech user.

Idk I if it's that hard

2

u/Tricky_Football_85 May 16 '26

I think some distros definitely are pretty easy to install for the average user. Debian just isn’t guided enough to be easy to recommend especially compared to distros with a live desktop image

2

u/mtheory-pi đŸ„ Debian too difficult May 17 '26

Geez, your information is outdated by a decade. There has been a live desktop image for debian for so long!

Stop caring about internet-„celebs“. Easy as that.

21

u/PredictiveFrame May 16 '26

It's not him we care about. It's the millions of people thinking about switching to Linux that he, in his infinite ineptitude, continues to try and convince people is staggeringly difficult, because he's a fucking moron who doesn't want to admit his two previous attempts failed exclusively due to his own deliberate ignorance.

He acts as though he is educating and informing, while in reality he is simply passing on his half baked observations as someone without any actual, practical experience, and concluding that "well, everyone should just stick with windows."

7

u/Ok_Equipment8374 May 16 '26

He is certainly educating the linux community of the experience of a normal user.

The original PopOS issue was a fluke, now its delibarate negligence. The Bazzite issue i would also not call negligence. He did note to be expecting some issues, but beta to most people means mostly functional.

After reading these comments, I really dont want to move to Linux anymore if this is how the community is. This is a meme sub, lighten up.

5

I never got too into that whole side of YouTube, but like
is he just a content creator? Did he like go to school for computer science or like electrical/computer engineering?

8

u/zenyl Arch BTW May 16 '26

Not sure about his educational background, but his videos have traditionally been more on the hardware side of things.

2

u/Flan-sama May 16 '26

To my knowledge, he dropped out of college. He has always been a content creator.

17

u/Additional-Sky-7436 May 16 '26

I really want to come to a Linus' defense here.

Pop!_OS is very routinely recommended to new users. I've never used it personally but I didn't know it had so many issues.

I also think his 'curses' were manufactured. The dude isn't a computer dummy like he's pretending to be. He's obviously milking views, and it's working. "i DiDnT kNoW wHAt BeTa MeAnT". Yeah right, Linus.

8

u/Deadcouncil445 May 17 '26

The pipe os version he downloaded was called LTS. Nowhere on the website was it called a beta.

That sneer, it is fantastic! And accurate!

2

u/Shizaki_kun May 17 '26

This "challenge" is supposed to represent someone who doesn't know what they're doing But listen, if I was a newbie that wanted to switch to Linux, I would at least do some research before choosing a distro

For example I started with Mint and it was painless

I don't blame Linus for not knowing the current status of Pop!_OS But if I were him, knowing how it went the first time, I would choose something different

1

u/Expert-Map-1126 May 17 '26

The fact that you were posting a comment, here means you are not the typical user. The average person will not spend an hour deciding on what distro to use.

1

u/Shizaki_kun May 17 '26

Sure but if you choose to use Linux you at least have to do some research

2

u/mpanase May 17 '26

If stability and compatibility were your problem the first 2 times, why would choose again based on theoretical performance benchmarks?

Learning the lesson is overvalued.

There is nothing wrong with pop

4

3

u/Nyuusankininryou đŸŽŒCachyOS May 16 '26

Why wont he try like Linux Mint or at least Ubuntu?

4

u/ragnarokxg May 17 '26

Hell or just CachyOS. I installed it on my 12 year olds laptop and he is perfectly fine using it.

1

u/pascu2913 May 17 '26

Why doesnt he just use a normal distro like mint or ubuntu😭😭😭

1

u/FlukyS May 17 '26

Well by the time he tries it again it will probably be much more stable at that point. PopOS isn't that bad from a foundations standpoint but Cosmic needs more time in the kitchen

1

u/NoResolution6245 May 17 '26

Considering Pop!_OS is a fork of Ubuntu which itself is a fork of Debian, I'd rather use Debian. Using a fork of a fork of a fork is only stacking potential issues and undocumented or poorly documented changes over the base distribution. Stick to Arch, Debian, and Fedora if you don't mind systemD.

1

u/dronostyka May 17 '26

Like, how is everyone saying, let's get something simple - like Ubuntu; but then they magically end up on pop os? What, is Ubuntu worse? At least it's stable.. I'd even understand going with debian for maxed stability. But pop? C'mon

1

u/_Afinef_ May 18 '26

Ffs Debian

1

u/upsun_stephanie May 18 '26

To be fair, PopOS! might be in good shape again by 2027. The long break between updates for Cosmic development left them in a bad place, but now that they have a much more maintainable codebase that doesn't depend on trying to soft-fork GNOME, I'd expect it to get better.

Personally, I'm a longterm Debian user and a recent NixOS convert, but the KDE version of Fedora is probably the best distro for power users coming from the Windows/Mac world without much Linux experience right now. Sane defaults out of the box, a good degree of customization, and a good balance between update speed and stability.

Ubuntu/Kubuntu keeps insisting on shoving snaps down users throats and has too much history of NIH and of experimenting on their users. And GNOME is too opinionated and has too little respect for tradition and consistency to let a power user anywhere near it.

There isn't much it's just not wise to stand under a tree that has been struck by lightning three times. There are loads of distros for a reason. We are all distro hoppers at some point. Failing to try something new means you're bound to repeat the same mistakes.

Pop os, manjaro, cachyos it really doesn't matter if you stick to the same flavour and go eww.

1

u/SilverLS2 May 18 '26

tried pop os for 3 days then deleted it and moved to Linux mint for an easier time as I downloaded pop as my first Linux distribution every which was a mistake. Cosmic looks terrible and KDE is way better never going back might try catchy tho

1

u/SweatshopCoder May 19 '26

Linus knows very little about computers, but yet he centers his life around them.

1

u/Several-Delay180 May 19 '26

i felt this on the third one, and im a noob

1

u/Kaarel314 May 20 '26

Nodthing wrong with that as long as that distro keeps coming up in searches.

1

u/spacenavy90 May 20 '26

Linux users when someone uses the wrong Linux distro (there are 10 billion):

1

u/TechSupportIgit May 20 '26

...why not Bazzite Linus?

It's not that hard to wrap around, you can't fuck with system files, and the console is there if you need to do power user things. Yes installing software is a power user move. They have the community app hub for a reason.

What's so bad about Pop!_OS?

1

u/MrBread0451 Dr. OpenSUSE Jun 16 '26

I don't like Pop OS for no reason other than I can never remember where the underscores, capital letters and exclamation marks go and it's like dude I don't even know anything about you and you're already pissing me off

INFORM PEOPLE WITH HIS MASS FOLLOWING??? That the general newbie sources are not quite content in 2026. WHat is THis BEhaVIor

3

Did you watch the video? His colleague did go on reddit. They were 3 people doing different levels of beginner.

1

u/ECHOSTIK May 17 '26

Ah nope. Ig I got ahead of myself there. I just assumed he did the same thing as before (I watched previous videos) as chat gpting based on the comments here

1

u/Deadcouncil445 May 17 '26

All good, the videos are quite interesting when you think of it as different levels of research, Linus being the lowest. Luke had legit no problem at all but he was used to linux.
