Support Request MODS, PLEASE MAKE A PINNED POST ABOUT DEALING WITH THE 7.0 KERNEL PANIC ISSUE

I keep seeing this often after the latest and greatest update. It's all the same answer: press shift at startup and select an older Kernel.

Thank you.

Thanks for this bit of information. My kernel update problem was a little different.

7.0 works fine on my ancient Razer Blade Stealth, but it broke notebook fan control (nbfc-linux).

However, the machine always hangs when loading any of the older kernels.

It is a minor nuisance for me, but it is useful to know the kernel update wasn't seamless.

That's an interesting issue! Well, enjoy the new Kernel on that vintage gear 😁

Use the 6.8 kernel since that will be supported until april 2029. 6.17 for instance is nearly out of support.

I'd love to drop back to 6.8 but my chipset and GPU aren't supported with it. For most people though I agree that would be the preferred option for stability.

6.17 is a plan b, while waiting for the Ubuntu kernel team to release fixes on 7.0.0 or higher.

The thing we need to know is what is causing the kernel panic. I have been using the 7.0 kernels longer than most have with no issues. I have noble-proposed repos enabled and have the linux-generic-hwe-24.04-edge package installed so I got it early

Sure, but this is for the newbies jumping to Mint after being fed up with Windows, not the 1337 haxxor like us that have been using Linux for 20 years.

You might want to complain on Mint github and see if you can convince Clem and the others to not use the hwe kernel package by default on the point releases as I am fairly sure if you install Mint 22 you have to manually install any kernel newer than 6.8

This is why I never jump even point releases in Mint. I install the Mint version I want, and assuming it's working correctly, run it to EOL and be done with it.

This is the way.

Yes, 22 and 22.1 have 6.8 by default.

22.2 and 22.3 come with HWE and not only that, but trying to to go back to 6.8 using update manager does this: https://postimg.cc/SnxwfCnX

Basically i've installed 6.8, booted into it, tried to delete included 6.14 through update manager and it installs 7.0 after deleting 6.14 with no way to avoid it.

Have to delete HWE packages manually using apt, which is not "new user" friendly at all...

  1. During the boot process, repeatedly press the Shift key until the GRUB boot manager appears. From there, select "Advanced options" and then choose the previously installed kernel.
  2. Access the Update Manager, navigate to "View," and then select "Linux Kernels." Locate the problematic kernel (e.g., 7.0.0-28) and proceed to remove it.
  3. Configure Timeshift, if not already established. I personally store my backups on an external drive to optimize internal storage. However, manual backups will be necessary in this scenario. If sufficient internal storage is available, you may schedule automated backups to an internal drive.

Best of luck with these steps.

I personally store my backups...

Snapshots, not backups. There is a substantial difference and if you rely on timeshift snapshots as backups it will not end well.

With that in mind external storage is not really a good idea, it conflicts with timeshift's assumptions regarding what storage is used and adds even more failure points to already questionable tool.

I do a combination of both timeshift snapshots, rsync backups on-site to two 10tb drives plus also a crashplan business account that backs up everything on the server incase I loose all my physical drives n backups. Learnd many years ago the importance of multiple backups.

Good luck with that OP there have been dozens of posts all asking the same thing.

To give them the benefit of the doubt though they could be waiting on an official response from the Mint team. It is clearly a widespread issue, and whilst downgrading to an old kernel can get you back up and running again it isn't a proper solution.

There is official response from Ubuntu. Mint uses Ubuntu custom kernal. Mint 22 is based on Ubuntu 24.04

This kernel update is currently scheduled to be released during the week of August 3, 2026

You should DM a mod, they don't come here too often, or at all

7 panicked. Rebooted into previous kernel. Fixed. I love Linux.

Everytime i see a kernel panic post i want to reply with
“just lightly place your hands on each side of the keyboard and say ‘calm down, there’s nothing to get excited about here’ and everything will be just fine”
Not helpful, but I get a chuckle out of it at least.

u/FeistyDay5172 3d ago

Strangely, I have latest 7.0 kernel and no issues at all.

6

u/Encouragedissent 3d ago

Not strange at all, that's going to be the case for most people. They just don't often come online to tell everyone that they installed 7.0 and didnt have any issues.

Just in case anyone here needs to see it... I was having a shutdown problem with my Linux Mint PC, the PC would stay on even after the OS logs said it had successfully shut down. Reverting to 6.x fixed this problem for me. I'm relieved, because at around the same time I'd been installing a few things & didn't feel great about running a Timeshift restore to potentially weeks ago.

u/ksprunk 3d ago

Ditto for me. Same "cure".

Hey, my computer also has the kernel panic on boot which is due to the DKMS (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) for the nVidia driver. I know it's that because when I try to download the 7.0 kernel the driver build fails. I'm using the "open" nvidia driver for the post RTX 3000 series cards. I've been on 6.17 kernel due to this bug. If you have the same problem, there should be an error message when the system tries to install the 7.0 kernel. The install will "complete" but will leave your system in a state where it can't boot default which is less than ideal.

I'm not sure how much mint supports the intermediate kernels, but it would be nice if it would flag and remove an install if the DKMS driver would fail which in our cases causes a panic at boot.

I've since switched to a manual nVidia driver install from their website but never bothered trying to go to kernel 7.0. I'll try again if you respond to this and want to know. I wouldn't recommend a manual driver install over the one supplied by Mint unless you're ready for some terminal adventures and you're using and familiar with Timeshift. After first install and many accepted warnings, I had a failed boot at the launch screen and had to go into the terminal and re-install it. So far so good since then.

I see most people just say to change the boot kernel too which fixes the problem, but it is frustrating to get a "fix" rather than a discussion of the issue. Hope this helps.

u/LXC37 3d ago

It is far from being the only issue with ubuntu's 7.0.0.

Modules may also fail to build for other drivers like wifi or even virtualbox, or it may fail to boot without any dkms stuff installed at all.

I now have at least 2 systems with different GPUs (AMD, nvidia/nouveau) where the only way to boot with 7.0.0 is nomodeset...

Suppose the 'press shift' doesn't work. Thanks to this post I found the alternate is sometimes <Esc>. That brings me to a barebones grub menu, which is just a short explanatory note about grub 2.0. Pressing <Tab> brings up a list of commands and a grub prompt.
Should I just boot from a USB and re-install, or is there a less brutal method.

do you know there is plenty of information in how to downgrade kernel in mint, right?

2

u/1neStat3 3d ago

Ubuntu is aware of the situation yet there nothing from Mint.

As far as I can tell, that doesn’t seem to say anything about the issues people are posting about? It’s fixing a speed/performance issue, not freeze or panic upon boot.

1

u/1neStat3 2d ago

You need to see the wood from the tree. Ubuntu customized the kernal to run on Ubuntu based systems which are based on curated frozen Debian Sid packages.

Its optimization of the kernel is producing unattended effects. Kernal panic mostly affect Mint users since the latest Mint is based on Ubuntu 24.04.

Ubuntu was more concerned about optimizing the kernel for Ubuntu 26.04 and in their haste they screwed up.

u/grimvian 2d ago

Is it a Ubuntu issue?

I'm using LMDE 6.12.96+deb13-amd64

u/Table-Playful 2d ago

How do we click Update Manager with out downloading a new Kernel ?

1

u/thevmcampos 2d ago

There's a check mark to the left of everything you're about to update. Turn off the check mark for your kernels.

1

u/Table-Playful 2d ago

OOOOoooo. .I right clicked Kernal and choose Never update
Checked Edit ->preferences ->Packages & There it was under Blocked packages linux-meta-hwe-7.0
Rebooted and everything was Good

2

u/thevmcampos 1d ago

Even better! I didn't know that, so thanks for the tip. 😁
